Elephant Dreamer - C Rosewell Jonas

C Rosewell Jonas Entry Date: March 13, 2008: Traveling and following the passion of where life takes us is truly inspirational, and something we can all do. The following sharing and blog entries were inspired greatly by wanting to share how there was a significant shift in my perception, which lead me on the journey I share here. This travel blog has been a great forum for having a place to share my thoughts and the passion for animals (and life). Out of this, a new fund-raising organization has now formed called Animal Dreamers (and a website: www.animaldreamers.org), as well as my own personal website (www.elephantdreamer.org) that will allow me to expand the ways I can share my writing ventures, some more specific travel ideas related to eco-tourism, being of service, and ? (we'll see)...... So may the journey that begun with this blog.... only continue!

Entry Date: February 6, 2008: The Journey Begins and Continues! This travel blog was started on December 23, 2007 in order to give some history of why connecting with wildlife organizations has become so important. It provides a detailed journal of my trip to India and Thailand that was made from January. 9th - Feburary. 6th 2008, including information about the three wildlife organizations I connected with (Wildlife S.O.S. and Help In Suffering while in India, and The Elephant Nature Park in Thailand). The main entries are listed in chronological order (the most recent will be listed on the top, however journal entries will begin with the first and work their way to the most recent). The entries begin with a summary of my first two trips to India and a little overview about my spiritual path, as well as the pivotal event that triggered this heart-interest in helping animals (especially the Asian Elephant). Additional entries will be added as there is inspiration to do so. Hints for navigating: anytime you want to get back to the listing of all of my blog entries, just click on the underlined "elephant-dreamer" then scroll down to the entry you want, and simply double click the heading of the entry.

I include my original "travelblog profile" here for reference, however I sense this journey will continue to be a growing experience, as I continue to explore and deepen my understanding of how to help the animals on this planet. Writing and fundraising seem the direction that I am to follow, yet I certainly know that the Mystery of Spirit leads us on paths our minds cannot understand, or anticipate. So, this is just the beginning as I get more fully involved in understanding what is going on, and learn what I/we can do to help.

Written on Decemeber 23, 2007 prior to trip: A growing passion to understand and explore the truth of our interconnection with animals has inspired this most recent pilgrimage to India and Thailand. Previous travels to Asia were to deepen my spiritual understanding. However, mysteriously it appears that this may be the most spiritual of all of my past journeys. Working as a medical social worker, it has been easier to stay open to the human experience than to the potential suffering of animals, especially elephants. Now, it seems a new path in life has begun, as I avail myself to the mystery and communication of animals. This heart-driven mission is to understand, to witness, and not turn away from the lives, experiences, and hardships of the animals I come in contact with. To do this, I am willing to risk a broken heart, as I allow myself to discover this unfolding story of compassion, healing, and advocacy. It is my hope this sharing will be of benefit to the animals I come in contact with, and that there be a growing awareness of their plight. It is also my wish that our hearts may be touched and inspired to do whatever we can to help the animals we say we love.

So may the journey continue!

6/5/08: Our journey included a visit to West Yellowstone, and fortunately a visit to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in the town of West Yellowstone. The scenery I include here is also from the long drive it took to get here, including scenes from the Badlands in North Dakota, and the splendid Alpine views of Wyoming. I had mixed feelings about the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center: it was great to see the habitats and the bears and wolfs seemingly enjoying themselves. These animals, for the most part, had become too interested in humans and our food/garbage, or were discovered [View Full Entry]

The following article by Trisha Sertori featured in the Jakarta Post compelled me to add this blog entry about Bali and the elephants that I saw there during the Summer of 2007. I also visited the Elephant Safari Park in Taro, Bali, which is featured in this article. There are other elephant parks or camps (some have similar names), but this is truly the best one and I would encourage others to it seek out. While there, we heard that this one treats their elephants the best and is the one to support. The article below also challenges my usual hard-line [View Full Entry]

The Elephant Safari Park employs numerous local residents which is a win-win situation for all concerned.

"For thousands of years the Sacramento Valley has provided winder haven for ducks, geese, and swans. Waterfowl migrate here by the millions from as far away as the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. The habitats of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex are islands in a sea of agriculture in Sacramento Valley of California. This valley represents the single most important wintering area for waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway." So if this place is so great, why have so many people not even visited it? (I visited with some couples from Sacramento while in San Andreas who have never [View Full Entry]

21 April 2008: I returned from my journey to PAWS. Actually, PAWS has two sanctuaries (both located out of the Sacramento area). The new one that will eventually house all of PAWS' animals is called ARK 2000 (2400 Acres of land in San Andreas, California). I was able to spend a full day there, mostly just hanging out and watching the elephants. I could have done that for another full day easily! PAWS currently has 11 elephants total (Asian and African, which are kept separated). ARK 2000 also now has over 30 tigers. At the original sanctuary (which I was also [View Full Entry]

Journal Entry: March 7, 2008 (Planned visit to Wildlife Safari and Howling Acres planned on March 8th, and a visit to Wildlife Images planned on March 9th). As a continuation to learn and explore alternative animal habitats offered around the world, I planned to look around my home state by visiting three "sanctuaries" in Oregon, in hopes of finding what I would consider to be a "true sanctuary". Please refer to my blog entry on the Oregon Zoo in January 2008, and my journey to India and Thailand to better understand what I mean by a "true sanctuary". What a true [View Full Entry]

So, here is a little secret for those spiritual seekers out there about “Finding Yourself” in India:) For anyone who has traveled in India, most all would agree the country is a vivid place, full of extremes. The country is huge, with a population of 1.1 billion people, just second to China. One moment you can be shaking your head thinking how can people live like this, as experiencing the chaotic system that somehow manages the constant flow of traffic can be mind-boggling, if not ear deafening. Watching vehicles of all sizes, pedestrians, and animals (the abundant stray dog and wandering [View Full Entry]

12/28/07: Entry prior to leaving on this trip: After leaving Varanasi to Delhi, an early morning flight will take me back to Thailand. Again, I will stay a night in Bangkok, then fly out the next morning to Chiang Mai. The next morning I will be picked up by staff from the Elephant Nature Park and stay for four days. They have an EXCELLENT website which I encourage people to look at (www.elephantnaturepark.org). The life stories about the elephants they have rescued will present a heartrending view into the life of the domesticated elephant. These elephants are brought together from a [View Full Entry]

12/28/07: Prior to leaving on this trip I wrote: Following my visit to Jaipur, I will fly back to Delhi to catch another flight to Varanasi. I am not sure what my adventure will entail while I am there, but it is a destination I have wanted to visit for some time. In addition to staying by one of the main Ghats, I will also be spending some time at the Krishnamurti Retreat Center. Varanasi is known as one of the top pilgrimage sites for Hindus, and is considered especially auspicious to die here (also to get married). The Holy River [View Full Entry]

12/27/07: Prior to trip I wrote: After Agra, I will depart to Jaipur which is famous for the Amber Fort, and other monuments and castles. While Jaipur is the gateway into a major tourist destination in India, Rajasthan; coming to Jaipur for me was inspired by my research about elephant riding. I learned about the wonderful work that the organization, HELP IN SUFFERING is doing. On their website they have this quote, " “It shall be the fundamental duty of every citizen of India … to have compassion for all living creatures” Constitution of India, Article 51-A(g)." That should be a [View Full Entry]
