This blog shares travel stories, writing, and narrations about spirituality and opening the heart to life. It includes some details from my three trips to India (in 2005, 2006, and 2008), other travels, organizations that are helping elephants (and the Dancing Bears), and even shares the secret of "How to Find Yourself" in India.

Cathy Rosewell Jonas:
As a fellow traveler on the spiritual journey, I am sharing what I have learned about opening the heart to life.

Some History:
I started this blog in 2007, just prior to leaving on my 2008 trip to Thailand and India. I was inspired to face where I felt most vulnerable. For me, this vulnerability was my aching heart when I would see suffering animals. In my previous travels to Asia, particularly to India in 2005 and 2006, I witnessed much suffering, animals and humans. My spiritual exploration was closely tied to being present to whatever was happening. Yet, it felt there was some unfinished spiritual business in this regard, which inspired the 2008 trip. So, I went with the main objective to not turning away physically or emotionally, no matter what I may experience, to keep my heart open to it all. In the end, I learned a lot, met some wonderful people, connected with a variety of charities (helping animals and humans), and met some very special elephants.

So, the journey continues, as does the Travelblog!

May we keep our hearts open to it all!

Namaste'

Final stretch of our three week adventure now brings us to Vietnam. Please see blog entries "Part 1 of 3: Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam in Three Weeks" for pictures of narrative and pictures of our time in Thailand; And see, "Part 2 of 3: Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam in Three Weeks" for our time in Laos. Our last leg of the Journey.... Welcome to Vietnam December 31st, 2009... The day is coming to an end on our second day in Hanoi, and I just heard my first of many anticipated fireworks. Happy New Year! The transition from Luang Prabang, Laos to Hanoi was quite a transition. We are still on "Lao Time." Everything seems very fast here, and have now learned that Hanoi is tame in comparison to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) where we will ... read more

December 28th. Some history: For those who know me, I love elephants. When I was leaving for this trip to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam many had asked me if I would be doing anything with elephants or researching any agencies working with elephants. I had no plans to do so. For past information on some of my visit/reviews, check out some of my blog entries including the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, and PAWS in California, as well as the work being done by Help In Suffering in Jaipur, India. I have quite a bit of personal experience with visiting a variety of elephant camps and those offering elephant rides, as well as a lovesick heart for the plight of the elephants, especially for those used in tourism and circuses (see some of my other blog ... read more

See Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam in Three Weeks, Part 1 for pictures and details of Thailand, now we are in Laos, before flying to Vietnam, which will be featured in Part 3 of this journey. December 24th. We crossed the Friendship Bridge from Nang Khai, Thailand yesterday. An Irish ex-pat we had met in Nang Khai the night before recommended we take the 20 minute city bus instead of taking a Tuk Tuk from the Friendship Bridge to Vientiane, where we are currently staying. He told us that it was not only much cheaper, the locals appreciate seeing Westerners take public transport. He was right. We were treated with kindness and although it was crowded and bumpy, it was one of those simple experiences I am glad we did. Now, getting to the Lao Orchid Hotel ... read more

Another Journey... Journal 2009 Thailand/Laos/Vietnam 15 December 2009 (Trip Dates: 12/16/09-1/7/09) As I embark on another journey, this time to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, I am reminded of how many times I have journeyed somewhere, even within, to achieve or accomplish something. Sometimes the journey has been for the discovery of enlightenment, other times for adventure, sun, or to help others (e.g. the Dancing Bears of India or the Elephants of India and Thailand). Well, this journey really has no felt purpose. Sure there will be sun, which will be much appreciated at this time of year, and most certainly it will be an adventure, yet I have no expectations. My husband plans on checking out a few language schools, in case he decides he may want to teach overseas someday. For me, I am along ... read more

Going deep into the space of Unknowing The Heart Cave is dark You cannot find your way with your eyes or your mind The only way you can know is to feel your way through It's within the darkness that we discover who we really are The Heart Cave holds the mystery of the Universe In the Heart Cave we are One Yet with the Open Heart It is still just the Beginning Mind quieting in its Searching Attention directed to the Source of all Being Spaciousness Revealing There is no Ending Going to India was about finding myself, or awakening my heart to the meaning of Love. These journeys have served as my foundation, and have enabled me to explore the meaning of my life on ever deepening levels. My first two trips in 2005 ... read more

Over Springbreak (late March) of 2009, we took a quick trip to Panama. We stayed 2 nights coming and going in Pamana City, and 6 nights on the island of Bocas Del Toro. We have been partial to Asia as one of our favorite destinations, however, we were left feeling like we would certainly return to Central America. Just hanging out again at La Coralina Lodge in Bocas Del Toro would be fine by us! ... read more

8/30/08 For two days this week, I spontaneously boycotted the Carson & Barnes Family Circuses, I add some photos to this blog and some information about why I felt compelled to do it: In one advertisement alone for the Carson & Barnes Family Circus, it gave the schedule for their performances in Washington - Oregon - and California from August 19th - September 6th, 2008, and stressed how they have beautiful elephants performing. In reading between the lines, it occurred to me in just 19 days, the circus animals would need to perform at their best in a total of 16 cities, sometimes having to perform two shows per day. (And please note, this was just one flier, these elephant and other the other animals have been: and will be on the road for much longer ... read more

6/5/08: Our journey included a visit to West Yellowstone, and fortunately a visit to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in the town of West Yellowstone. The scenery I include here is also from the long drive it took to get here, including scenes from the Badlands in North Dakota, and the splendid Alpine views of Wyoming. I had mixed feelings about the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center: it was great to see the habitats and the bears and wolfs seemingly enjoying themselves. These animals, for the most part, had become too interested in humans and our food/garbage, or were discovered to be a potential danger to lifestock: so now are kept safe in the sanctuary. These animals will not be released into the wild, however they looked pretty relaxed and accepting of their enclosures. It ... read more

The following article by Trisha Sertori featured in the Jakarta Post compelled me to add this blog entry about Bali and the elephants that I saw there during the Summer of 2007. I also visited the Elephant Safari Park in Taro, Bali, which is featured in this article. There are other elephant parks or camps (some have similar names), but this is truly the best one and I would encourage others to it seek out. While there, we heard that this one treats their elephants the best and is the one to support. The article below also challenges my usual hard-line opposition about Elephant Riding, at least in some circumstances. I still believe there are so many wonderful and more natural ways to enjoy elephants and that tourist will still come to see the elephants just ... read more

"For thousands of years the Sacramento Valley has provided winder haven for ducks, geese, and swans. Waterfowl migrate here by the millions from as far away as the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. The habitats of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex are islands in a sea of agriculture in Sacramento Valley of California. This valley represents the single most important wintering area for waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway." So if this place is so great, why have so many people not even visited it? (I visited with some couples from Sacramento while in San Andreas who have never heard of it, and also I never heard of it when I lived in Davis, California years ago)... So the story goes: As I was driving down I-5 going north on my way to San ... read more
