A great nights value at the Old Town Inn Florence and a good nights sleep to go with it. There were plenty of stops on the way up 101 today with the first being at the Oregon Sand Dunes just out of town.Gretchen started the route march up the dunes then at the top decided that she needed to dip her toes in the North Pacific ocean. It was only a dip as the water temp is so cold. There was absolutely no one else on the beach in either direction which I guess shows just how few people live in this part of USA. Then it was onto the BIGGEST sea cave in the world. The sea lions that usually frequent the cave were sunning themselves on roks adjacent to the cave and only viewable from a platform ... read more

As I explore so many wonderful places around the Bend area I find myself falling more and more in love with this place. It comes over me in waves and is caused by the littlest things, like the way the residents are so warm and friendly. When you pass by people walking they look you in the eye, smile and say hello. There is something about the elevation that makes the sky more brilliant - when it is blue it is a deep rich blue, when the sunrises (yes I have been up that early!) it is a brilliant pink, and sunset is a painting of autumn colors. The views, anywhere you look you see mountains in the distance. The smell - much like a campground with fresh pine. The way the city has grown since ... read more

The third day of our roadtrip dawned fine and sunny again and the wind of Sunday was not present. The motel in Crescent City as just passable, not flash but el cheapo!! We headed north on 101 but had only travelled a couple of blocks and a warning bell sounded in the car and a light came on the dashboard. We didnt know where the next Dollar Renta Car would be and as it is a public holiday we didnt expect the Dodge dealer,if there was one in Crescent City,to be open to tell us it all meant. So Gretchen phoned the 0800 number on the rebtal agreement and hey presto the answer was low tire pressure. So into a gas station and air in all four tires even though we had no idea how much each tire should have as ... read more

August 29th: DMB All it took was running around like chickens with our heads cut off for most of the morning...and part of the afternoon...to be armed (literally) and ready for our trip to commence! With the cooler iced, oil checked, and tasers charged we hit the old dusty trail (aka I-90). After setting up camp at the Gorge, we staked out prime real estate on the grassy knoll (not that one). Soon after we were joined by Greg, Sandi, and Amanda (Ang's parents and sister), we were warmed up with some tunes performed by O.A.R....yeah...we weren't too familiar either. Then AFTER an amazing intro by DMB...and several songs, cue Josh and Missy. What's new right?! JK The music was awesome, the Gorge as scenic as ever and the company...TOP DRAWER! Missy, the hostess wit da ... read more

Alright, the moment you all have been waiting for (or at least since the last blog), the Voodoo Doughnut. As an avid viewer of both the Food Network and the Travel Channel, anyplace that has been featured on both must be worth a visit. We left Mt. St. Helens at around 10am we took Interstate 5, south to Portland, Ore. Not having any other actual destination in mind while visiting Portland, we got a good overview of the city by driving around looking for parking for an hour. Naturally, upon finding a parking spot, it began to rain! Luckily, we have a handy-dandy pocket umbrella (thank you mom!). We walked to Voodoo Doughnuts before all else. Apparently, everyone else has seen the television programs featuring this place, because the line was literally down the street. You ... read more

8/30/08 For two days this week, I spontaneously boycotted the Carson & Barnes Family Circuses, I add some photos to this blog and some information about why I felt compelled to do it: In one advertisement alone for the Carson & Barnes Family Circus, it gave the schedule for their performances in Washington - Oregon - and California from August 19th - September 6th, 2008, and stressed how they have beautiful elephants performing. In reading between the lines, it occurred to me in just 19 days, the circus animals would need to perform at their best in a total of 16 cities, sometimes having to perform two shows per day. (And please note, this was just one flier, these elephant and other the other animals have been: and will be on the road for much longer ... read more

Fort Stevens was our camping accommodations on Thursday night, as we rolled into town at around 9:00. Being right before the Labor Day weekend, the ranger told us we were lucky to get a spot. Starting Friday, they were booked solid. This was the largest campground west of the Mississippi, and the fourth largest in the country, with well over 500 campsites. Because of the lateness, and the rain, we decided to sleep in the car. In the morning, amidst the gray skies typical of the Pacific Northwest, and a fair share of sprinkles, we proceeded to Astoria, where we had a wonderful tour of the local laundromat. Astoria was named after John Jacob Astor, and is the oldest town in the American west, founded only five years after the Lewis and Clark expedition. It's also ... read more

Greg picked up the rental car that we’ll be using for the next month. It’s a Toyota Rav/4 and the seats fold down for plenty of storage space (we’ll need it!). We spent the rest of the day packing and will be heading out tomorrow after packing a few final items.... read more

In Crescent City, California, we took a detour from the 101 and took Highway 199 to Cave Junction, Oregon, in order to visit Oregon Caves National Monument. Not only is Oregon Caves National Monument one of only a few National Parks in Oregon, they are also very rare caves in that they are made of marble. Only 5% of the world's caves are marble, most are limestone. As is the case with the majority of the trip, I underestimated the road and the amount of time that it would take to get to the monument from Cave Junction. The 20 miles on the map were very winding and a relatively slow 20 miles, so we finally got to the Visitor Center at 1:30pm. We also did not plan for the fact that you have to schedule ... read more
