Well, the year has had its ups and downs. The city of Portland (and the most of the state of Oregon) is wonderful with lots to do and see (and drink). Living in Beaverton for most of the time really didn't help me get into the atmosphere; but, once in Portland, you feel why the city is one of the best in the country. Grad school has definitely been a great experience. I have learned things that I would not have imagined, and I have had the opportunity to go to Colombia to do fieldwork with the grant money that I was awarded. I have gotten to travel much of the state; but I hope that the pics show it better than the ramblings below. Not a big city (compared to other major cities in the ... read more

My husband Joe and I just went to Oregon for 9 days and we fell in love. Joe is ready to move there. I am ready to visit again. In short, we arrived in Portland late at night and got up the next morning and headed towards the Oregon coast. Before we did this, I had to drive up into Washington State and have breakfast, just so that I could officially say that I have been to Washington State. We had some breakfast in a little town by the name of Salmon Creek. We went to Astoria, Oregon and visited the Columbia Maritime Museum. Astoria is where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific Ocean. We then drove further down the coast and stopped in Cannon Beach for lunch. This was a beautiful town. It was ... read more

The day before yesterday after waking up in the Hawthorne district in Portland, Michael and I looked through some of the shops again and I got a good shirt. It is stripy black and white. We ate $8 dollar X-Large pizza 18 inches. Michael got new nipple rings that are black titanium at some "halloween" store in Hawthorne that wasn't actually halloween costumes, just good clothes and pierces. After leaving Hawthorne we checked into the North West Portland Hostel which is closer to downtown Portland. Free "Street Cars" aka trolleys. We walked around Portland a lot with our ultimate destination being Burnside Skate Park. Wonderful! Although, it was not nearly as busy as FDR Skate Park in Philly. There was barely anyone there... only a bunch of drunk kids and a biker that rode up to ... read more

Smith Rock, Oregon. A small, nondescript state park whose name doesn’t conjure up images of wild landscapes or scenic crags. In truth, quite the opposite is true. Smith Rock is the home of sport (bolted) climbing in the US. When it was ethically prohibited to place bolts in the rock unless absolutely necessary which often translated to very sparse protection and very scary and potentially dangerous routes. Smith Rock was one of the first parts of the US to embrace the then radical concept of placing bolts where convenient rather than placing them at utmost need. Today, many areas have accepted a more moderate stance and both styles have found various areas to thrive in. All ethical considerations aside, Smith was a wonderful place to climb and a wonderful place to be. One of the ... read more

After a two night fantasy stay at Vashon Island, Washington Michael and I decided to move on south towards Portland. Now we are here at the Hawthorne Hostel in Portland, Oregon! Michael and I have decided that Naya and Mina are cool Taiwanese gals that we met at the Vashon hostel. There are many pictures of many of the people that we met at Vashon. Brian from San Francisco, Oliver from Germany, Sean from Korea, Naya and Mina from Taiwan, and another girl whose name has fled me from South Africa. Needless to say we are meeting people from all over the world!!! The second night at the Vashon Hostel we decided that if we didn't pay the first night we still would have been able to stay with zero problems. Therefore, we stayed the second ... read more

Im not going to say much about this trip, Because a went on this trip a while before i found this wedsite. We didn't go to Oregon for somthing good. But it tured out to be great! I really enjoyed being up there, it was cool a lot of the time. There are lakes and ponds everywhere. It rained almost every day i Love the rain! It seemed so much cleaner and easyer to breath up there. Even the rain seemed cleaner. Some of the mountines had snow on the top of them. We ate at this Resterant when we first went into Oregon. It was a little out side of Portland. I can't remeber the name but i will try to put pics up. If you ever are up that way stop by that place! ... read more

Thursday, September 4th, 2008 Before we start with the update to our blog, I want to apologize for the pathetic title I gave our blog. We plan to blog about our trip every five or so days just to keep everyone informed on what where we are and what we're doing. Internet cafes are abundant and provide a nice break from the sultry weather. If anyone who's reading knows anyone that needs to be added, throw a comment at the bottom of the page or just e-mail Curtis (curtisghanson@gmail.com) or Sally. With that, below is a narrative detailing our plans of the trip. A few hours are left before we - Sally and Curtis - head to Thailand for two and a half weeks. We are gonna start our trip with a grueling 26 hour elapsed ... read more

One Last Taste Of Home Scene- A scrumptious lunch served by the Taylor's, bidding us farewell. A scenic drive down the Old Pacific Highway ending at the quaint town of Bandon, OR. After a drawn out conversation with the power trippin State Park Ranger (He had us pegged as a coupla' prissy sissies), we came to Whiskey Run Beach.... A desolate dune lacking...oh my gosh, can it be....NO FACILITIES!???! Eh, we managed. Tent pitched, sun setting, we rested well-for FREE- in the bosom of the coast. Quote Of The Day:One day I'll be able to say that to you as it shoots out your ass! How Did Sand Get There?! Camping for free on the beach is great, but we had no idea we'd be taking it with us. After shakin' out our...everything...we continued on to ... read more

This morning, Heather wakes me up at five past six. She is flying around the house 100 miles an hour, like she does, getting everything pilled up. I can tell she is excited to get going. I am too. I take my shower, I try to enjoy it's hotness as I think it will be my last for at least a couple of days. I get dressed, pack all of our bags in the car and go inside the house for some coffee. I take a sip just as Heather comes flying around the corner and she says, "Mike, do you have my passport!?" This is funny to me because she was giving me a hard time all day for being anal retentive. Yesterday I spent organizing all of our stuff, packing and repacking it into ... read more

Another beautifully fine morning and a hearty breakfast that included waffles and we were on the road again.I seemed to have picked up a mild sore throat and runny nose so hope it doesnt develop. We found the old highway easily and started off climbing high above the mighty Columbia River to the first lookout point. From there the size of the river was apparent. It dwarfs anything in NZ. Another viewpoint a couple of miles on at Vista Point gave great views both up and down the river. We stopped at three waterfalls that had short walks to get to them including the appropriately named Bridal Veil Falls. The light thru the trees was beautiful and as the road was quiet with traffic it made the drive very restful.Down below near the river I-84 buzzed with traffic speeding by ... read more
