A great nights value at the Old Town Inn Florence and a good nights sleep to go with it.
There were plenty of stops on the way up 101 today with the first being at the Oregon Sand Dunes just out of town.Gretchen started the route march up the dunes then at the top decided that she needed to dip her toes in the North Pacific ocean. It was only a dip as the water temp is so cold. There was absolutely no one else on the beach in either direction which I guess shows just how few people live in this part of USA.
Then it was onto the BIGGEST sea cave in the world. The sea lions that usually frequent the cave were sunning themselves on roks adjacent to the cave and only viewable from a platform well above them. The cave was interesting but the biggest in the world......??? I don't think so but I guess it draws the punters in and Americans probably dont know any better because they dont travel far from home.
From the shop at the caves there was a beautiful look over towards the most photographed lighthouse in the USA.A beautiful view on a magnificent sunny day.We
also followed a whale just of shore as it breached a couple of times and hopefully the video will have picked it up.
We then went onto Cape Perpetua named by Capt Cook as he travelled down this coast.Did a couple of walks to parts of the coast that were aptly named the Devils Churn as the sea came in and washed up a narrow channel and the Spouting hole also affected by the tide and wave action.
Then it was up a steep road to the very best views we had seen of the coast from 800ft above the road.Very spectacular views to the south. We could have walked it but we were not that keen and it was just as well as the path was zigzag all the way.
The coastline then smoothed out with plentiful beaches and the road also flattened as we approached Newport which was a sizeable town with a lot of history.Took a stroll along the oreshore thru the old town and spent time watching sea lios close up on pontoons.Gretchen brought a couple of new flags for our pole, one for summer and another with a cat in a hammock.Could have bought more but there is only so much room in the suitcase!!!
Depoe Bay was supposed to have the smallest harbour in the world butagain I guess it draws the punters but although the harbour was small it wasnt that small.
After Lincoln City it was goodbye to 101 and we headed inland with a short detour to take a look at a covered bridge that had been transported to the site it was on.
The traffic built up as we approached Portland and we were later than what we anticipated getting to the motel we chose out near the airport.Diner from the freezer and watching Americas Got Talent live and we are almost ready for bed !!
