First off, it's been a long time since the last blog, and it's not really Cody's fault, but he's going to get blamed anyway. So be it, I apologize. Second, this will be the last blog, since the trip is now over, and has been for a month. We had a beautiful drive through Tennessee, ending up in Pigeon Forge. We stayed at a hotel room (SOOO nice) and left early the next morning after our FREE pancake breakfast!! As we drove through the Great Smokies, some of the trees were just beginning to change color into bright reds and oranges. The rolling hills were really pretty, covered in trees and the blue haze they were named for. We drove up to the center of the park, which was at the border between Tennessee and North ... read more

As we drove through Ohio on our way to Louisville, there was one place we had to stop for Grandpa Linscott: White Castle. Cody had never been there before, so we decided to give it a go. We ate our burgers as we drove from Columbus to Cincinnati. When we first drove in to Louisville, we (of course) got lost and headed west to Indiana. We finally got turned around, and found a spot to sleep for the night. The next morning we headed back in to town, where our first stop was to the Louisville Slugger Factory in downtown. The factory was really neat; out front is a huge 120 foot tall, 9 foot diameter baseball bat. In the front lobby is a huge 20 foot baseball glove. We weren't allowed to take any pictures ... read more

One of the good things about being back east is being close to the majority of my family. Not only did we get to visit my Aunt Lori and cousin Dan in Michigan, we also made stops at my Great Aunts' houses in Mansfield, Ohio and Sharon, PA. Additionally, we made it to Pittsburgh, PA, and saw my Aunt Karen and cousin Christian, as well as my Aunt Mary Beth and cousins Sophie, Anne Marie, and Lucy. But, first things first. After the Henry Ford, we headed south to Toledo (specifically Waterville) to show Cody where I was born and our first house. While most of Waterville was the same, they had definitely built out. Where there used to be fields and farms down the street from our house, it was all houses and subdivisions. My ... read more

As most of Tuesday (9/16) was taken up by driving to Detroit, we decided to get tickets to visit the museum for Wednesday, September 17. We were surprised, and very happy, to find that with a Verizon phone, the audio tour of the museum was free! Apparently, they have a deal set up with Verizon to allow customers to dial #THF (#843, 313-483-4098 for non-Verizon) and then enter individual item numbers to listen to the history of Henry Ford and pieces in his collection. It was great! So for anybody who wants to, we will include the item number with the photos, so you can call and get info about the object and hear what we heard (it's free air time for Verizon customers, everyone else will pay their regular long distance rates). How cool! The ... read more

This one is out of chronological order, you still have Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island, Michigan to come, but I wanted to put this one together now. For those of you who don't know, I have a thing for round rooms or turrets on houses. Someday it is my plan to have a house that has a super tall turret that I can turn into my library, with a huge ladder on wheels that I can wheel around the round room. Until then, I am constantly on the lookout. Mackinac Island was a fantastic place to get ideas for my future round room library (I think Cody had his fill of hiking the island for round rooms, however - he doesn't share in my over enthusiasm for them). This particular blog is basically for my own ... read more

First of all, for anybody who was wondering about how my recent (09/23) job interview went, it was great! They said that I will hear back in 3 or 4 days. Yay! We headed east on Thursday, September 11, from Duluth across the top of Wisconsin and into the Upper Peninsula (UP) on Highway 2 to the 28. The one thing that we wanted to make sure to do while we were in Wisconsin was get some nice, fresh cheese curds. The one thing we didn't do while we were in Wisconsin was to get some nice, fresh cheese curds. So much for that. We did enjoy the drive, getting a few glimpses of some pretty red leaves and also of Lake Superior. On Thursday afternoon we finally reached Munising, Michigan, immediately outside Pictured Rocks National ... read more

One of the neat things about our trip so far is all of the suggestions we have gotten on places to visit. Traverse City is one of those places, thanks to my dad and the people he works with. We arrived in Traverse City on Friday, September 12, at night. Because it was dark, we decided that we would put off the sight seeing until Saturday morning, but we did make a quick stop at Pangaea's pizza, where we got our food and drinks to go. After mooching internet from a local restaurant, we found a KOA about 15 miles south. As it had been raining off and on, we decided to sleep in the car in order to avoid packing up a wet tent again the next morning. As has been the case, we utilized ... read more

One of Cody's good friend from La Junta, Liz Nicklos, now lives in Minneapolis, MN and since we had never been we thought this would be the perfect time to stop. Monday, September 08, we got up early, headed out to get some breakfast and up to the Mall of America to get our shopping on. First thing: the MOA (as we'll call it) is HUGE! They have everything there. We didn't know exactly where to start, so we just went up to the very top and circled our way on down and around. The first store we stopped at was Department 56, which Nickey was super excited about because they have all of the Dickens village places. After that we circled down around the center area of the mall, in which there was an entire ... read more

Wall, South Dakota: gateway to the Badlands. More importantly, home of Wall Drug. To steal a saying from the 1000 Places to See book, "Like ZsaZsa Gabour, Wall Drug is famous for being famous." It all started way back in the Great Depression, when this small town drug store was struggling along with the rest of the country. In order to bring in more people, the owners got the bright idea to advertise along the nearby interstate that they had free ice water. Soon customers were flocking in, more than they could handle. So they expanded. They soon decided that more signs would bring in more customers. American GIs in Europe took signs with them, advertising the distance from wherever they were to Wall Drug. The tradition has continued to grow, leading them to give signs ... read more

So we headed out of Cody around noon on Friday, September 5. The original plan was to hit Devil's Tower along the way. Unfortunately, we forgot to take into account the time change in which we lost an hour. In addition to being after Labor Day, and National Parks closing at earlier times, we arrived at Devil's Tower after it closed. We did see it from the highway, though. Cody got into a verbal altercation with a nasty female road construction worker, who was not doing her job in Gillette, WY, when he drove slowly past where she was standing with her back turned to us, twiddling her little flag. Apparently she didn't like this, and yelled at our rear bumper "Hey, hey, you can't drive past me!" As we had clearly already passed her, we ... read more
