My room is powder blue. I share it with a Buddha who holds an Amethyst bigger than his belly. It smells like practice in here, I like that. Practice smells something like sweet musk, cedar, and natural body odor all mixed up, into a smell cloud that rests like a mustache under my nose - - organic, delicious. The descent into Medford from Portland was smooth this time. I’ve come to accept the reality that there is no way to arrive in Medford, Oregon by plane without riding in an air-born craft with propellers. Maybe it is my acceptance of this that has made it easier. It’s not planes I am weary of … its’ more the size of the vehicle hurtling through the air combined with chance wind. It is the chance wind. I’m relieved ... read more

Tuesday August 17, 2010: We'd happily stayed an extra day at Rocky Point, Klamath Lake, because the weather predicted for the Medford area on Monday was 100 degrees and we figured our day there would be hard enough without battling heat. First of all, Phil had to vote. His absentee ballot for the Australian federal election had gotten to Portland after we'd left, so we'd picked a small town in southern Oregon and asked Sky to send it to that post office as a “general delivery” so Phil could pick it up there. The little town was called “White City” and it was on our projected pathway to Medford. Luck was with us! We found the post office in a commercial center next door to a laundromat, which we also needed, and a food store—and as ... read more

Friday, April 30th It was a crazy, busy week at work and on Friday I headed straight to the airport after work. My brother, Tom, met me at the airport in Medford. Tom and I grew up being very close. . .he's only 1 year younger than me. We even took some highschool computer classes together. Although, he obviously was much better at computers than I am. He's a computer forensics scientist now. He helps put bad guys in jail by finding evidence of their crimes on their computers. . .how cool is that? (He took me through the labs where he works, but I'll talk about that more later on). Tom and I were also roommates in college my last year of undergrad and his first year of undergrad. We had sooooooooo much fun, but ... read more

In a time where natural disasters are happening all over the world and people are looking for a way to give back, Dogs for the Deaf offers something for everyone. Located in Southern Oregon, Dogs for the Deaf has been rescuing and professionally training dogs to assist people and enhance their lives for over 30 years. Those of you who know me, know that I grew up in Southern Oregon. You may also know that I have somehow happened across all sorts of animals to rescue - dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles, geese, robins, swallows, even snakes. All of these rescues have just been happenstance encounters, but they managed to earn me the nickname "mother nature" and open my eyes to the amazing assistance organizations available for animals in need. Dogs for the Deaf truly exemplifies the ... read more

Long drive on Thursday. Got pretty as I started heading north. Arrived at the hostel in the Redwoods in time to take a shower and watch the sunset on the beach across from the hostel. Woke up early on Friday and drove back south about twenty miles to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Beautiful! The mist was enshrouding the grove, and the sun was shining through the trees. Drove up north about thirty miles to Crescent City after I walked through the grove. Stopped to take a picture of the lighthouse there. Drove about 10 miles northeast after that and stopped at the Reed-Simpson Grove. Walked the loop there and continued on northeast to the Stout Grove. Walked around there and headed into Oregon. Stopped at the Oregon Caves Monument and took the 90 minute walk ... read more

We arrived in Fortuna, CA after spending a great day riding on winding roads and through Redwood Forests and along the northern coast of California. After supper, we sat in the hot tub for a while then settled in for a few episodes of Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel. Today we went north to Redwood National Park and then Northwest to Medford, OR. We stopped at AAA and picked up some maps that should get us through the rest of our trip. Grace and I were both in kind of a lousy mood this morning when we started out and had a few sharp words with each other, but I think the Redwoods kind of took the stress out of the situation. We were soon happy and holding hands. After spending some time at the Redwood ... read more

Only a few days before I leave for San Jose, Costa Rica and beyond. This entry is really just to get a feel for things. I still need to set up my insurance, but its looking like I am going to go with World Nomads. Every thing else seems to be taken care of. My pack is a 70ci Oprey that I purchased a few years ago for trail hikes and hitchhiking. I've decided to take my new canon that my delightful girlfriend, Rachel, got for me at Christmas. The plane leaves Sunday morning from Portland. Not much else to say. I have my first hostel picked out for two nights (Costa Rica Backpackers). After that, the unknown. Medford is the western terminus of State Highway 62 - the Crater Lake Highway - and the western anchor for my research. The road has been straightened, widened, and realigned over its nearly 100 year existence but for the most part, modern travelers to Crater Lake follow the same route that the early stagecoaches and auto tourists used in the beginning of the 20th Century. The road passes through a handful of small communities, most of which have faded into the side of the road as time and tourists have rolled on - though a few have improved their standing with natural amenity related developments. The area had been based in timber during past decades but with the decline of the large scale timber economies in the west (due mostly to regulations) many towns and counties ... read more

There is not much exciting to say about the time I spent in the Medford area. I was in the public library, historical society, and university research library most of the time. As interesting as that may have been (and parts were, if you can believe it) it’s not particularly exciting to write about in this context. But instead, I can comment on a few of the interesting things I saw in and around the area in the 10 days I ‘lived’ there… As noted in the post about the drive away from the coast a few days back, I have a particular affinity for the random shit that can be found along America’s byways. And I’m not talking about things like ‘South of the Border’ off of I-95 at the North Carolina/South Carolina line - ... read more

Tim and Tom: We have made our way down so far as Medford via Crater Lake National Park. We stayed in a motel last night with a gym and an indoor pool/spa so that has kind of set the standard for our last few days on our way down to San Fransisco, yes we have become motel snobs! The ability to work out and also swim and lounge around in the spa has been a god send. It is just the luxury that we have been needing. These places do not have kitchens so we have found ourselves living out of restaurants of various quality for a few days and the meals are usually very large with soup and salad as standard at a reasonable price. After a little rain dance from myself (Tim) in the ... read more
