We stayed 5 nights at this hostel located on W27th St, right smack in midtown Manhattan. Just a 5min walk from Penn station...10min walk to Times Square, Empire State Bldg... Location wise, it is one of the best! For US$36/pax/night, we had the whole room to ourselves, an attached bathroom, tv and a fixed line telephone. The bathroom we had was CLEAN. Damn nice. It's the best deal we could ever ask for! The worst thing that happened here was we had to drag our 20+kg luggage up a 1-storey flight of stairs in order to reach our room. Goodness, i got to really drag mine up ONE step at a time. Well best part was, when we come back at night..we'll fill our bathtub with warm water and then soak our tired feet in it. ... read more

This is the start of my first ever Travel Blog. Trying this out for my first time. Wanna document all the wonderful memories i've had in US for the past 2 mths! (13May - 11Jul 2005) The airline we took was EVA Airways. (Taiwan airline) When we first board the plane, we were all pretty disappointed that we had no personal in-flight entertainment! ARGH. But nvm..we still survived. Eat, sleep, strain my neck to check out the tv screen up there in the distance, listen to my MP3 player or just plain staring into space is what i did to pass time. At first, we only know that we had to transit over at Taipei. But over at Taipei, only then we found out the plane is gg to fly us to Seattle first (west coast), ... read more

We just purchased my plane tickets for Japan. I'm leaving from JFK (don't even get me started on what time I'll have to be at the airport) on August 22nd and through weird time warps (and a gazillion hour stop in Detroit) I'll arrive in Osaka at 18.15. I think the KG people will come and pick me up around 20.00 or sometime thereafter. Hopefully there will be other students en route to Osaka from Detroit, else that's going to be a very long, dull wait. Good thing there's WiFi in all terminals, or so their website says. I'm coming home through more time warps and arriving in New York on the 14th. I was originally going to stay until the 21st, but I wasn't sure if staying that long after exams/classes would be an impedement ... read more

New York is an experience - so alive and full of energy!! There is so much to do here that we can't possibly see everything.! We have been to the statue of liberty, empire state building, time square, broadway (and saw phantom of the opera - spectacular), world trade centre site, walked over the brooklyn bridge, and seen all of the little areas like soho and greenwich. You could spend weeks here and still have heaps to do each day. During the week we crossed the border to Canada and went to niagra falls. This was breathtaking. We got absolutely soaked from our ride on the maid of the mist boat which takes you right up to the falls. It is like it is raining there even when you go to the lookout points on land. ... read more

Our final stop in the US before the real travelling begins!! Sara successfully negotiated the subway to meet her mum at JFK - a 4 hour round trip in total!! We highly recommend meeting your mum at some point on a round the world trip as the standard of accommodation dramatically improves!! The Hyatt was right beside Grand Central Station (a relief with our rucksacks!!) the room overlooked the Chrysler Building - perfect! Were real tourists and took a bus trip to get orientated around Manhatten and then spent the afternoon getting some culture, watcing Denzel Washington (live!!) in Julius Caeser in the Belasco Theatre - a real treat!! Had some difficulty finding somewhere to eat that night (something to do with being in the financial sector on a sunday night!!). Took another bus tour and ... read more

Entry by Gemma. We have a few hours left in New York. Has been a fun-packed few days. Arrived thursday evening on the GreyHound bus. The journey was very comfortable, they even showed a film on the bus- DaddyDayCare, Dave read his book, but i enjoyed the film! Stayed at the Big Apple Hostel, location was brilliant-right off of Time Square, i couldnt believe it. I loved being in the middle of all the action. I loved Time Square at night, it had such a buzzing atmosphere with all the lights and the people. We went straight to the theatre where Chicago was showing and got bargain tickets for that night. So we grabbed some food, put our most dressiest outfits on (not very dressy) and hit the town. We absolutely loved it and havent stopped ... read more

From: fran the man Sent: Friday, 29 April 2005. To: everyone Subject: On My Way To London Well New York’s been lovely I’ve almost done it all, Empire state, statue of Liberty, MOMA, Guggenheim, Macys, Bloomingdales, etc not enough quality time at central park though nor have I been to the Met - will try tomorrow though. Am staying in a cool hostel with some cool people and some strange people. I went up the empire state building -no King Kong as he's in Wellington at the moment, It was rather windy but the views over New York were stunning. The Guggenheim had this wicked exhibition on by this artist with a fascination for stripes; he’s put coloured stripes all over the interior and the roof along with a big wall of mirrors. If you threw ... read more

I'm here in New York to visit my friend Ariela who I havn't seen in three years since we met in Peru. There will be no further mention of the Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, Times Square and Fifth Avenue as its already been seen and done. I ventured into Brooklyn. This area is a burough of New York and does have a reputation of being a immigrant and latino neighbourhood with some areas being extremely poor. Many Manhattaners won't venture across into this area which they consider somewhat of a suburb. It has a pretty comprehensive collection including art from the ancient city of Ninevah (the only other western museum to have reliefs is the British Museum in London). The feature on display was Basquiat, who was a famous graffiti turned real artist who then ... read more

I'm playing catch up with these travelblogs as I've left New York, partied in New Orleans and am currently sunning myself in Miami Beach. Anyway... New York was great and we managed to see and do most of the things we wanted to in a short space of time. If I go back there then I'd use the time to wander around some of the areas that I didn't see and just take in the place a little more. I'm glad that we went to most of the tourist attractions, but a little more time to kick back and relax would have been nice. Our hostel was in the Upper West Side and it was a little too close to Harlem for my liking. The walk from the subway to the hostel was through a housing ... read more
