Well, I'm home from New Hampshire. I was just about ready to be home too. Being on Lake Sunapee for a week is always great but being away from friends, technology, and summer fun gets annoying. I slept most of the way back listening to my iPod. I got out of the car to what I would later find out was the hottest day of the summer so far - and it's a been a HOT summer. I embraced the heat and began unpacking. After a little while of bummin' around I decided it would be a good idea to find out what was going on in town tonight. My buddy Steve's parents were away and he was having a few people over. A friend from high school, Rupolo, was also having a party at his ... read more

We feel so lucky when our travels take us to visit relatives. Two recent long island road trips (and photos from last year's Memorial Day Weekend trip when the Vermonters were with us) were no exception. The northshore, characterized "The Gold Coast" by Nelson DeMille in a novel of the same name, is really golden. Great little towns, harbors, beaches, independent restaurants and shops and, it's Vivian's home. Getting to Long Island, we mostly use the NYS Thruway, the Throgs Neck Bridge, the LIE and the Northern Turnpike; however, we have crossed back and forth to Port Jefferson from Bridgeport, CT via a ferry boat, and once even took the Orient Point Ferry to New London. On the Ferry to New London, we passed by another Nelson DeMille landmark "Plum Island." Who knows what goes on ... read more

A Long Island Surprise - Joanne DeVoe, June 23-24, 2004 This is one from the "archives." Before we started the travel blog. We have heard about how nice “The End” of Long Island is, but never took it seriously. Misconceptions regarding traffic, rude people, over commercialization, and the like have lingered like a lead balloon. “Misconceptions” is the operative word. We wound our way back home to Ballston Lake from Long Island by first heading for Montauk and eventually the Ferry from Green Port to New London, CT. Fortunately, we missed the turn for the old Montauk Highway, the scenic, ocean road. Fortunate because, if we had taken the scenic road, we might have pulled in at Gurney’s or one of the other lovely established resorts along that stretch and missed our delightful stay east of ... read more

Good morning all...Yesterday was very successful in terms of getting stuff out of my apt. Though there is a lot of little stuff to deal with, It will all come together by the end of the day. Jeff has single handedly saved us from hypothermia along the way.....Hurray.......and with every moment passing we are getting nearer to our "adventure". Stay tuned as tomorrow around 4am we will hit the road with much sorrow for who and what we leave behind, but there will also be quiet excitement as to what lies ahead........Thanks Lorraine; I am still adjusting my sails......... read more

Here I am at work, or at least my body is here; my mind is a bazillion miles away as I go over my checklist of things to do before our journey begins on Tuesday morning. I'm sure I'll forget something or other, but hopefully it won't be something important like my wallet, my cell phone, the cat....Anyhow, it is with sincere thanks, appreciation, gratitude, etc. that I mention the overwhelming assistance of those I am fortunate enough to call friends. Since this is a public forum I won't get too detailed, but you know who you are PTS people! Roslyn people! Bohemia people! et al... Albert Schweitzer once said, "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should ... read more

This is my first blog post on travelblog, I hope there is no format protocol to be followed :D Anyways - this is gonna be quick, I like to travel a lot, and sometimes don't find friends who would have time to go on the same days. Chanced upon this website www.traveldaddy.com which is now sorting this problem for me of finding a travel buddy. As this is a travel blog, and so I had to write something related to traveling - I assumed sharing what is working for me with rest of the enthusiasts would be a great start. Look me up there at tina700 :D My next plans to travel include South east asia. anybody up for it?! Ciao till the next post. --- xoxo... read more

We have mustered up the energy to write a final blog about our round-the-world trip (Jake took the lead on this one). Sorry we've been so late with this update, but we are now so deeply entrenched in our suburban lifestyle (e.g. watching TV, shopping at evil Walmart and playing with hedge trimmers) that our trip seems like a distant memory! The Best Deals (Per day spending, including lodging, food, transportation & activities) 1) Cambodia: $33/day Cambodia is home to the cheapest beach towns that we encountered on our trip. You can stay in a bungalow on the beach for next to nothing in Sihanoukville. If you overlook the piles of garbage on the beach, the touts at every corner, and the armless, legless beggars, then it's paradise. 2) Laos: $35/day Really rustic but also really ... read more

As I enter my adult life I find myself with a certain longing for a far off places, the types of places that frequent the pages of travel magazines and web sites. The kind of stuff that travel dreams are made of. Unfortunately for my wanderlust, my bank accounts does not feel the same desire to travel. When I was a kid, we did the standard family vacation trips. Upstate to visit family, Florida to visit Mickey Mouse, here and there. The trip wasn't as important as the destination and at times I would find myself sleeping all the way to the place which we were going. I had little to no part in the planning of the trip therefore Route Numbers, exit signs, and all the other things which went to the the journey went ... read more
