Hi everyone!! So I'm a few months late getting an update out to you...and it's not too much of an update. Just wanted to share some photos of the area and let you know how we're doing. So, apparently we've hit the worst winter in Vail in over 40 years. We've had temperatures averaging in the 40's and very very very little snow (mind you, it seems like a lot of snow to us, but last year they got 600+ inches - yes, that's 50 feet of snow!!!!). This year is dry by comparison, and the quality of the snow isn't the greatest. Hence, the valley is something of a ghost town compared to how it normally is. A little disappointing for our first winter here, but hey, what can you do?? At least we're getting ... read more
Well, I do apologize that it's taken two weeks to get this first Colorado blog out to you, but when I give you a brief synopsis of what we've been through since our arrival, I'm sure you'll understand... Where to begin? We arrived two weeks ago to an apartment that was nowhere near what it was advertised to be (to put it mildly). Our very first morning, on the way down the mountain into town, my car decided to die on the side of the road. We had to get towed to a local mechanic, who thankfully informed us it was merely our battery, unaccustomed to the cold! So we got our new battery and went on to Walmart to pick up some things for our new place (there is exactly one Walmart and only a ... read more
Well, my plan was to update you a few times during our drive across the country, but after waking up super early every day and sitting behind the wheel for 10-12 hours at a time, sitting down and opening the laptop was the last thing on my mind! So here I’ll go through the highlight reel of our 2,200 mile jaunt and share some photos that we took along the way. We left before sun-up on Wednesday morning, waving goodbye to the parents and in-laws after collecting our very confused canine. Our cars were crammed with every bit of winter gear we possessed, along with whatever kitchen, bathroom, and other miscellaneous gear we could stuff in there. We headed out of Palm Beach and stopped for lunch in Ocala, about four hours north. There we met ... read more
Hello everyone! If you followed our blogs in 2009-2010, you’ll be happy to know we’re firing it up again for our next adventure. Alas, it is not nearly as exotic as our previous journey. I won’t be able to recount tales of glacier trekking or tiger taming or 101 ways to get detained in Australian customs (twice). But what I can tell you is what Jeremy and I have been up to for the past year, and where we’re heading next! (If you’re new to our blogs, you have a lot of catching up to do! If you'd like to read our previous blogs, you can go right to our homepage at www.mytb.org/aerogers, where you'll find everything listed. To help in the meantime, I've added a 'highlight reel' of some of our best photos from Asia ... read more
And we're home. It's kind of a strange concept, as "home" has taken on a whole new meaning in the past 14 months - 418 days, to be exact!! We left Bangkok to begin our marathon Thursday by a 5-hour red-eye to Seoul, South Korea. As the airport lies only a few miles from the North Korean border, we were understandably concerned about the political tensions in the area. All was quiet (VERY quiet) in the airport, though - you'd never know anything was wrong. We got a room at the airport's transit hotel for 6 hours of our layover - kind a of cool experience, though we slept through the whole thing. After our much-needed nap, we devoured a few burgers and waited out the last 4 hours of our layover before boarding our 10-hour ... read more
Well, here we are at last. Our final hours of our southeast Asian swing. In about four hours, we'll be heading to the airport in Bangkok. If you math whizzes want a challenge, here ya go: We depart Bangkok at 1am on Thursday. We land in Seattle (7500 miles away) at 11am on Thursday...yet, TWENTY-SIX hours (and two nights) pass in the meantime (10 hours at the airport in Seoul and 16 hours in the air). Then we have an additional thirteen hours of Thursday once we arrive in Seattle. So, for us, Thursday is going to be 41 hours long. Is that the goofiest thing you've ever heard or what?? Anyway, on Friday I graduated from my 3-week course of Thai massage. On the last day, we got to make fun herbal balls used for ... read more
Newsflash: Shark attacks come in waves. Not to worry, we have not been attacked by sharks. (Would be tough, considering we’re more than 500 miles from a beach). However, while discussing the topic of shark attacks with Kristin, a girl from Virginia Beach, we noticed that a lot of shark attacks seem to happen at once, then none for a while. And I made the totally innocent remark that shark attacks come in waves. Lunch resumes as usual. About ten seconds later, I look at Kristin, and she looks at me. And we nearly choke on our papaya salad because we’re laughing until we’re crying. Thus passes a typical lunch break at TMC Massage School. Anyway, now that I’m done playing comedian, back to Thailand. So I’m into my third week of Thai massage school, and ... read more
So, here we are. The last stop on our Asian voyage before we head home (three weeks away!). Thanks to our Lonely Planet Guide, we actually discovered that we are sitting in the southernmost arm of the Himalayas - who knew? After an overnight train ride, we are in Chiang Mai, Thailand's second-biggest city (150,000 people), way up in the northern end of the country. It's our friend Kate's favorite city, and it's not hard to see why. It's picturesque. It's quiet, but there's still plenty to do. The food is incredible and dirt cheap. Want to study Thai massage? Kickboxing? Thai cooking? Rock climbing? Elephant trekking? White water rafting? Play with tigers? It's all right here, in one place. What a great town. So we've been here for nine days now, and it's just flying ... read more
Well, it’s a good thing we left Phuket when we did. Apparently, the weather got so bad there that the airport shut down and even tour buses were on standby. After three days of being locked in our hotel room, watching the downpour outside, the last thing we would have wanted to do was add a few more days to the list. After a smooth one-hour flight on Air Asia, we touched down in Thailand's sprawling capital city of Bangkok. The monsoons have been heavy here, too, and we had a great view of flooded fields and rice paddies on the way in. Luckily, it was not raining, although we could have done without the haze and overcast. Sigh. Anyway, after a quick train ride and taxi ride, we found ourselves stepping into the home of ... read more
Well, I wish had more stunning photos of Phra Nang and the rest of the beautiful coastline for you. I wish I could tell you that the time we spent in Phuket, Thailand's tourism "king" of a resort town, was filled with gloriously sunny days and lots of fun activities. Alas, it was not meant to be. The afternoon after we went horseback riding, it started raining. And it was still raining yesterday when we boarded our flight for Bangkok. Sigh. What a drag. Nothing like being on one of the world's most beautiful islands and being stuck inside because it's pouring down rain. Soooooo...as you can see from the pictures, we took the ferry across the Andaman Sea in hopes that the weather would be good. I grabbed a few decent shots but they're certainly ... read more
