What other city in the world can you tour a royal palace, eat grasshoppers on a stick, and have your own following of paparazzi...all on the same day? Ah, Beijing. The longer we're here, the more this crazy city grows on us!! As usual, we've crammed so much into the past two days, it's hard to know where to begin! Yesterday was actually a pretty chill day for us. Sherpa's grueling hike left us pretty wiped and our legs were screaming for mercy when we woke up. The sky was gray and the Arctic winds were howling through the city, kicking up dust and debris like a Chinese hurricane. We took care of a few necessary evils such as laundry, hunting down an ATM, and booking our onward train tickets to Xi'an...which is going to be ... read more

Not Bad For Our First Day... For some reason, apostrophies are not showing up in this blog, so forgive the funky words that should have an apostrophe but dont. Case in point. Welcome to China - ha ha!! Also, this is the first blog with more than one page of photos, so make sure you click the "next" button above to view the rest of them! From now on there will probably be multiple pages of photos, so dont miss out... Well, after posting our first blog at 4am this morning, we unsuccessfully tried to go back to sleep for a little while...didnt really happen. Finally gave up around 7am and got up to face the evil morning. Skyped our parents back home so they knew we were alive and well; then had a delicious breakfast ... read more

We made it! And that's the beautiful thing about jet-lag. It is 3:44am on Friday morning here, and yet to my poor confused brain it feels like 3:44PM on Thursday afternoon. It's strange to not have to change my watch - I simply flip the AM and PM and I'm good to go. Or will be in a few days anyway, when I'm not sitting downstairs in a dark hostel listening to some random guy snore on the couch where he must have passed out earlier in the evening... Anyway!! We had an uneventful and actually pleasant trip, considering it took the better part of 24 hours from the time we left our home in North Palm Beach to finally arrive at our hostel in Beijing. A quick good-bye to the parents and the beloved Denali, ... read more

The Time Has Come... Remember the old anti-drug commericals: "This is your brain...this is your brain on drugs"? We've revised that statement to: "This is your life...this is your life in a box!" Because this is indeed is our life for the next 15 months or so...two backpacks, three small boxes of clothes, and Hungry. Thank you so much to all our dear friends and family who have supported us, visited with us, and made these last few weeks in Florida a wonderful send-off!! You will all be missed very much. So, without any further ado, we go to ship our boxes and finish the last of the last-minute errands. Tomorrow morning at 7:15 we depart from Palm Beach airport!!! After a layover in Newark, we fly almost 14 hours to Beijing and will arrive about ... read more

It is a terrible affliction that began in my childhood with long summer trips out west to visit my brother...gradually got worse as I began visiting cool places like Panama, Canada, and New England...and officially hit me full-on the first time I went to Europe (Spain to be exact) the summer I graduated from high school. Over the next few years, sometimes solo, sometimes with a friend, and more often that not with my father (my original travel companion), I'd find myself on yet another trans-Atlantic flight ... read more
