Well, at long last our streak of beautiful weather came to end, as all good things must. Tuesday and Wednesday it did nothing but pour down a thick, cold, blustery rain that chilled to the bone - and the temperature dropped at least 40 degrees, if not more. Ill-prepared for that drastic of a temperature swing, we spent Tuesday doing the thing most normal people do while on vacation - we relaxed for a change! I slept 'til 11am and spent several hours working on the blog, while Jeremy was still sound asleep at 2pm, if you can imagine. At last my hunger outweighed my desire to stay warm and dry, so I dragged hubby's lazy butt out of bed and off we marched to a nearby cafe' for a comfort-food lunch of burgers (not half-bad, ... read more

If I told you we found ourselves last night at a Havana-style party overflowing with mojitos, Cuban music, and Vietnamese dancing meringue in the street, would you think that the heat has finally melted my brain? Fear not, my brain is intact (barely), yet we found ourselves in just such a setting, watching in amazement as traffic stopped in both directions on a major street and hundreds of people (locals and tourists alike) gathered to watch the spectacle. I found myself (dead sober, by the way) pulled up on-stage (curse my blond hair!) by two Vietnamese guys clad in Caribbean get-up and palm-frond hats. A moment later I was dancing with a geriatric Aussie (who had jumped on-stage of his own free will), first something akin to the waltz, then to such classics as "YMCA," while ... read more

Greetings everyone! At long last, we've found time to upload some of the videos we've been shooting over the past 5 weeks. The quality is not perfect, as we had to re-size and convert the videos for the blog, but they're not shabby either. So bear with us and travel back in time to our first few days, way back in blustery Beijing. We've affectionately named this our "Bizarre Foods" episode, reminisce of the Travel Channel Show that goes by the same name. The following is a 23-minute series of our adventures in and around Wangfujing Street Market, where creepy-crawlies and unidentifiable meat lurk around every corner (and, keep in mind, five weeks later we still don't know what we're eating half the time)! So sit back, look fondly at that nice NORMAL food you have ... read more

It's hard to believe that as of today, the 14th of November, we've been gone for one whole month already! At this point we are finally starting to feel like true vagabonds...the reality that "we're not going home" anytime soon has sunk in, and it's actually a pretty cool feeling. Everyone we've met while traveling that has been to or lived in New Zealand has nothing but wonderful things to say about it, making us quite eager to actually get there! We're probably three weeks away or so...still have two more cities to hit in Vietnam before crossing into Cambodia to see the famed Angkor Wat, then we'll begin making our way to New Zealand. Yesterday we did a truly touristy, un-Jeremy-and-Amy-like activity and went to the beach! We asked the hotel owner to call us ... read more

Before I begin, I must relay a message from Hungry. He was very disappointed that over 100 people read his blog and he didn't get ONE comment from anyone that they liked it or thought it was funny. If you liked Hungry's blog and would like him to write more in the future, please leave a comment in his blog (Big World, Little Hungry) for him!! It will cheer him up. After all, he's as much a part of this trip as we are! So!! Yesterday morning we checked out of our hostel in Hanoi and headed straight back for the tapas restaurant for another round of tapas (smoked ham, tortilla, and an array of cheeses), then back to Fanny's for more gelato before grabbing a taxi to the Hanoi airport. Tiny little terminal, really, with ... read more

I would like to share this travel quote I read a few months back: "I believe that places, much like people, can be soul mates. There are destinations that have a spirit, an energy, and a pace that so perfectly mesh with your own that you feel simultaneously excited and at peace when you arrive." I have experienced this feeling twice before - once in Venice, Italy, and once in Budapest, Hungary. As of today, I can say whole-heartedly that I'm experiencing it for a third time, here in Hanoi. If we never come back, you will know where to find us. Send out the search team to every gelato cafe' and massage establishment in this city, and you're sure to find us. Two more days in this city has only solidified our love for it. ... read more

Hi everyone!! Hungry here. After weeks of watching Jeremy and Amy hog the spotlight on this blog, I decided to write one of my own. I am their mascot, after all! I've been having a great time on the trip, too, when I'm not stuffed inside the bottom of Amy's purse. This morning we all slept in late and when we awoke, it was warm and sunny. First stop was lunch at Pho 24, where we all ate yummy rice noodle-and-beef soup. I even tried chopsticks for the first time! Kinda tough when your fingers are covered in fur and your hands are bigger than your head, but hey...I did my best. People were looking at me funny, but then again they've probably never seen anything as cute and adorable as me! We walked around the ... read more

So picture the scene. You're floating on an 80-foot Oriental junk boat in the middle of a spectacular bay. Strange karst mountains covered with greenery shoot up out of the water all around you. The air is warm and moist and perfectly pleasant, a nearly full moon shining brightly overhead. And there you are, surrounded by fifteen drunk Europeans, downing cheap Vietnamese vodka and singing horrible karaoke at the top of their lungs to such songs as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “New York, New York,” and “Country Roads Take Me Home." And you’re not alone, as there are dozens of other junks in the same bay, all full of kararoke-singing tourists and way too much alcohol. Ah, welcome to Halong Bay. If you’ve followed our blogs of Yangshuo, the landscape here will not surprise you. The cliffs ... read more

A wise traveler prepped us for this leg of the trip with the following admonition: "When you arrive in Vietnam, you will either love it or hate it. There's no in-between." After one day here in the capital city of Hanoi, we can answer: "We LOVE it!!" But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. First we must recount our 3-day exodus from China. Tuesday afternoon we didn't even leave Guilin until almost 3pm. Since it was only a 5 or 6 hour train ride (supposedly), we booked regular seats for the afternoon instead of sleepers. EIGHT HOURS later we finally arrived in Nanning, the last big city in southern China before you hit the Vietnam border. If there was any hope of redemption for Chinese trains, they were dashed to bits on this ride. Aside from obviously ... read more
