This town and surrounding area is a real gem. First of all, you are surrounded by mountains which you see in any direction you look. The RV park was one of the nicest I have ever seen (Sunny Acres). From the RV park you can go anyway you want and see lots of things. We traveled north to a National Park, Dripping Springs. Unfortunately it turned out to be a hiking trip and seeing as how I cannot hike, it was somewhat of a disappointment. We decided that seeing as how we couldn't do much here, we headed down some small dirt roads to US 70 and headed north. We visited Holloman AFB. This is a real gem of a military installation. Not big, but beautiful in architecture. We turned around (after having lunch on base) ... read more

We began the day in the lovely showers at the RV RESORT. They were all tile and very nice. Then we went to the complimentary breakfast in the main building that was also tile and oak. We had waffles and orange juice and coffee. We could have had cereal or toast or bagels as well. We talked to some of the other travelers. One couple from Long Island were full-timers in their RV. They said this was the nicest RV park they had seen in their travels over the past year, so they were going to stay for a month! We agreed that it was also the nicest place we had seen so far. On the way back to the camper, we saw some pretty Gambel's quail run across our little space. Another new bird. We ... read more

After 2 weeks in Mexico, I got a flight out to the Mexico/El Paso, Texas border called "Ciudad Juarez". Family bit concerned as is in the midst of a drug war and is also the place where hundreds of young women's bodies have been found in the outskirts after being raped and murdered. The police are believed to be involved in these rings. In the end, I got a bus from the airport to El Paso in the middle of the day so no real story to tell. Purpose of trip to New Mexico was to visit my sister and brother-in-law. Had a good week that involved hiking, sledding down white gypsum dunes (formed from gypsum being absorbed in the mountain water, drying and blowing down into this area) and eating lots of Tex-Mex food. In ... read more

Let the drama unfold... On Thursday we were traveling from Phoenix, AZ to Roswell, NM. It was only 88 degrees out but the Jeep computer came up with a "Transmission Overtemperature" alarm. This was a little curious because the temperature the day before was 109 with no problems at all. We got off at the next exit and brought it to the first shop we came across. The determination was that the Jeep would not get out of 1st gear. We stopped at the next motel and slept on it. What do we do? Repair the tranny? Donate the car and fly home? Rent a car? In the end we decided to buy a 2005 Ford Escape. It's a little smaller than the Grand Cherokee but we did what we had to. The whole process took ... read more

Drove and Drove and Drove yesterday. TEXAS is a hugh state and I thought we would never get to New Mexico. Well, we got our first ticket......$175.......In Texas you must exit the travel lane next to a stopped emergency vehicle, even if it is an unmarked Tahoe and there is an 18 wheeler in the other lane. Mike did get out of the lane , but not fast enough. After we got our ticket he pulled someone else over who passed us. Oh well I had 3 tickets budgeted into our trip....I know how Mike likes to go fast. Well, I found a campground that was PERFECT...see my photo's. ... read more
