Flew out to Cartagena from Panama in late December on the same flight as Justin, a Louisiana guy who I had met at the El Salvador border with Nicaragua. My late planning for NY meant that I paid over 300 USD to get out there and was not able to reserve a hostel bed as all was booked. Justin had a bed at a hostel for the 30th so we headed for the North Star hostel. The first night there was spent at a bar listening to an annoying German diplomat talking about prostitutes within the first 30 seconds of being introduced to him. Justin wanted to splash out and bought a big load of shots 10 mins before the club shut - we didn´t know this at the time. Walked the 2km back from the ... read more

I decided to spend more time in Nicaragua and sacrifice the pricier Costa Rica and Panama. The bus from the Costa Rican border to San Juan (CR capital) got me into the city at the dreaded after dark slot. I tend to favour night buses as you save one night´s accomodation and get into the city... read more

I am travelling around using my Mastercard and debit card but Ometepe only had one cash machine that accepted Visa. My only option was to use the local supermarket guy who would swipe my card and take a 10% commission. After just getting enough money to get off the island by ferry I encountered the same problem in Rivas, where they had multiple ATMs but they were all out of money expect for the visa ones. In the end I started going around shops that accepted mastercards as payment options and explained my situation in my crappy Spanish. The first lady agreed to do it for 5% but then didnt charge me at all. Now with money, I took a couple of buses to get to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast where I ... read more

Ometepe is a volcanic island in the middle of the big lake in Nica. There are actually 2 volcanos on it and it is a really pretty place. Hiked up a Volcan Concepcion with 2 Canadians and a guide who spent a few years in Las Vegas during the civil war as his father was a sniper in the Sadinistas, but didnt survive the war. On the walk up we saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys (apparently got their from pirate ships back in the day, these are the monkeys on pirates of the carib), hawks and other fauna. Next day was for kayaking near Merida which was good. ... read more

Bryan, Justin and I got to Granada around 2pm and checked into the Bearded Monkey. I really enjoyed Leon but Granada has more to it, although they are both similar in just being cool cities to just walk around in. We celebrated our arrival with pizza at the best pizza place in town and hatched a plan for a Breakfast Crawl the next morning following the discovery of multiple good breakfast places. Watched "Clockers" at the hostel and ended up going out with some Brits to a local bar and crappy nightclub. It was a schoolnight so not much happening, although the walk back to the hostel involved having some idiot throw a rock in our direction, getting hassled by another guy and some weirdo following us blowing a whistle. Woke up early for the Breakfast ... read more

Arrived in Leon, still sickly but after 2 days my body was able to hold on to some solids and liquids which so I got in on the free beer and cockfighting on the afternoon of our arrival. Cocks fight whenever they are put together so owners cut off the left foot nail that they use to hurt eachother. For cockfighting, they put a small blade on the birds and let them go at it. It just looks like a lot of flapping around until the white feathers turn red and the owners start sucking blood from their faces so that they can breathe. We were told that only 1 in 10 fights end in the bird dying, but 3 out of the 5 bouts ended in a kill. Leon is the liberal city of Nica ... read more

I got an early chicken bus from Lake Atitlan in Guatemala to Guatemala City and shared a taxi to get to the bus terminal in zone 4. Guatemala City, like all the other capitals in Central America has a bad reputation but I late Sunday morning is probably the best time to visit. Just had an hour walking around before my bus went to San Salvador. Arrived in San Salvador around 4pm and the place was quite deserted. Got a hotel room in a recommended cheap hotel ($10-night). Had cardboard stuck to the walls and ceiling and this turned out to be there to keep the vermin out. Weird place. I went to a fast food chicken place and buying a beer to spend the night in the hotel room watching TV (not good to be ... read more

Lake Atitlan is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and Aldous Huxley famously wrote of it: "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing." It is surrounded by volcanoes on all sides and has a scattering of Mayan villages on its borders. During the Guatemalan civil war, the lake was the scene of many terrible human rights abuses, as the government pursued a scorched earth policy. Indigenous people were assumed to be universally supporters of the guerrillas who were fighting against the government, and were targeted for brutal reprisals. First trivia that I picked up from a threesome of older American hippies waiting for the small ... read more

Uneventful trip from Belize City to Flores in the north-east corner in Guatemala, near to where the Tikal Mayan ruins that sit in the middle of a big ol forest. It largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Mayan civilization and a UNESCO world heritage site (so there). 200 - 900 AD was the best period for the city but it dates back to the 4th century BC. I arrived on Saturday morning in Flores, which is a nice island on a lake that is connected by bridge to the more populous St Elena. What I didn´t know is that the cash machines run out of money quickly on the weekend and are not filled up until Monday. After trekking around 5 cash machine sites that were evenly spaced out through the city I gave ... read more

Antigua was the original capital of Guatemala until the citizens got tired of having to rebuild the city after numerous earthquakes in the late 1700s and moved to what is now Guatemala City. Prior to Antigua the capital was at another site ruined by a big mudslide in the 1500s and so Guatemala City is probable on borrowed time. The trip from Tikal was on a local long distance bus with a nervous Swede sitting in front of me how didn´t like the idea of overnight buses which are more prone to being robbed. Taking a day bus to Guatemala City would get you there in the evening, which is not a good idea, so the night bus was the lesser of two evils. What I did see of Guatemala City was a sprawling, single-story and ... read more
