The day started off a chilly 25 degrees. That's right I said 25 degrees... We all said, "What the heck, we aren't in Alaska yet"... We had an uneventful driving day and actually made it out of the state of Texas. Tomorrow we are off to Arizona...... read more
White Sands National Memorial
Published: April 7th 2013North America » United States » New Mexico » Las Cruces....quick hello before we head on the road tomorrow. Last night we decided to set the alarm real early (5am) and take a day trip to White Sands National Memorial. The wind was not in our favor for a good night of sleep- in fact at about 3am Jordan rolled over and said if we don't fall asleep soon I say we hit the road! Needless to say when he alarm went off neither of us was ready to go anywhere- but with a black furry companion along for our hike through the dessert we headed (east!). The dunes are beautiful and pure white- for as far as you can see. We hiked bare foot - it was like a 5 mile pedicure!! At about mile 1.7 we felt like we were almost there! The sun ... read more
Dark Knight & Fantastic Day - Las Cruces, NM
Published: August 4th 2012North America » United States » New Mexico » Las CrucesLast left off with the Blackberry Jalapeno Margarita at a lovely brewery/restaurant in Las Cruces, New Mexico. All I can say is, thank you Yelp! The place is called De La Vega's Pecan Grill and specializes in, you guessed it, Pecan Ale. Before the margarita, we sampled the unique brews - Pecan Ale and Green Chile Ale. Flavorful and bold with the scents and taste of respective names. The menu was a bit too pricey given that so many amazing New Mexican restaurants were available, we passed on dinner here, but did follow through on the recommendations of the bartender who recommended El Sombrero Patio Cafe. We arrived at this seemingly tiny restaurant with a very packed parking lot a bit after 6pm. We nabbed the last four top table before the wait for tables began, ... read more
Good Evening We rolled in to the campground about 2 hours ago after a day-long trek from San Antonio. The current photos were taken from the RV rolling down the highway at the speed limit of 80. Admittedly, it has taken a little getting accustomed to moving that fast. How will I ever be happy with 128? We hopped back onto the bus yesterday midmorning to walk around SanAntonio, have lunch, take the "River" ride and to buy a Stetson for Eileen. It is the one thing she has been talking about owning right from the start of the planning for this trip. Our ride out from SanAntonio (I 10) was uneventful except for the almost constant search for gas. This road takes one through some very beautiful but desolate landscape. There was no apparent habitation ... read more

Published: January 29th 2011North America » United States » New Mexico » Las CrucesTHE BASICS Friday featured a lunch at the gorgeous old Arizona Inn in Tucson. Next day, we walked the self-guided tour of "Historic Downtown Tucson." Then we drove to the DeGrazia Gallery. On Sunday, we decided to leave Tucson and drove as far as Willcox, AZ, stopping at the wonderful Amerind Foundation en route. Monday we visited Chiricahua National Monument, and Tuesday ventured to Cochise's Stronghold. Wednesday, on the road again, to Las Cruces, NM. Thursday we walked in the White Sands National Monument, and then paid homage to lost astronauts at the Memorial Garden of the NM Museum of Space History. We dined at La Posta, a renowned Mexican restaurant in Mesilla, just south of Las Cruces. THE FLUFF When I met my high school lockermate Carolyn at the Arizona Inn, she led me back ... read more

Las Cruces, New Mexico
Published: October 10th 2010North America » United States » New Mexico » Las CrucesFrom Gail's journal for Saturday, October, 9th: The approach to Las Cruces is spectacular, the city of 80,000 people nestles in a valley surrounded by jagged mountain peaks. Our RV park was located near the old village of Mesilla, established by Mexican colonists in the 1500's. The thick-walled adobe buildings now house art galleries, gift shops, and restaurants. We made short work of the gift shops and decided to treat ourselves to a steak in Mesilla's best restaurant, an elegant 150 year old hacienda that once was the governor's mansion. We were not disappointed-the dining room was beautiful and we had wonderful aged steaks - Lindsay says the best he's ever had.... read more
This town and surrounding area is a real gem. First of all, you are surrounded by mountains which you see in any direction you look. The RV park was one of the nicest I have ever seen (Sunny Acres). From the RV park you can go anyway you want and see lots of things. We traveled north to a National Park, Dripping Springs. Unfortunately it turned out to be a hiking trip and seeing as how I cannot hike, it was somewhat of a disappointment. We decided that seeing as how we couldn't do much here, we headed down some small dirt roads to US 70 and headed north. We visited Holloman AFB. This is a real gem of a military installation. Not big, but beautiful in architecture. We turned around (after having lunch on base) ... read more

Too Windy to Travel
Published: December 21st 2008North America » United States » New Mexico » Las CrucesWe began the day in the lovely showers at the RV RESORT. They were all tile and very nice. Then we went to the complimentary breakfast in the main building that was also tile and oak. We had waffles and orange juice and coffee. We could have had cereal or toast or bagels as well. We talked to some of the other travelers. One couple from Long Island were full-timers in their RV. They said this was the nicest RV park they had seen in their travels over the past year, so they were going to stay for a month! We agreed that it was also the nicest place we had seen so far. On the way back to the camper, we saw some pretty Gambel's quail run across our little space. Another new bird. We ... read more
