Team ETI is headed to Tanzania today. This time our goals are 3-fold: 1. Bask in the glow of the KARUCO Dedication (Oct 2017 with ten present from Team ETI); 2. Get updates on Karagwe University College - KARUCO; and 3. Moving the Rural Opportunity Center (KARUCO extension) concept forward. The team this time is Jan Hansen of ETI (me) and Bruce Engel of BURO Engel Architects (NY). Bruce and I will meet in Amsterdam and fly together to Tanzania. I look forward to introducing Bruce to our partners in Tanzania - the ELCT and to help put a face on the KARUCO project. Bruce was the architect largely responsible for the design and function of the Women's Opportunity Centers in Rwanda just a short distance from Karagwe (although difficult to reach by ground transport due ... read more

We wanted to check in with everyone before we actually leave for Norway. Right now we are sitting in Black Sheep Pizza in the Minneapolis Airport – eating pizza and watching the World Championship Team Trial from earlier today. We are already having an awesome vacation! Yesterday we visited Uncle Earle, Aunt Betty Jane and Lynette. Dave brought them up to date on the ancestry project he is working on; some new facts about the family in the 1917-1918 period. And as we always do – we learned new stuff about Earle and Betty Jane that we didn’t know. This visit, we learned that they had a Coast to Coast store after Earle returned from WWII. Betty Jane is a second generation American – her mother was born in America, but her grandparents came from Norway. ... read more

blog 08-19-17 Albert Lea, MN Getting out of town today was a little struggle. The dogs were up before 7 ugggg, but it took a while til we were on the road. Both Ginnie and I had really good sleeps despite the train that rumbled through at 5 am with whistles blarring. Alfy was really scared and paced and whined but eventually went back to bed. The train engineer seemed to relish the idea of blowing his whistle at that hour. We had to drive to the dump station, dump, fill the water holding tank ( 40 gals) then hook up the car. Then it was on to the gas station to fill the tank with 44 gal of gas. Finally, at 9:45 we were on the road and traveled 315 miles to Albert Lea, MN ... read more

blog 08-18-17 Judy Garland Museum It cleared for real in the morning and the temp was delightfully cool. We were in no hurry this morning to get started so we took it easy, enjoyed a leisuely walk with the dogs, enjoyed breakfast then headed for town. It was Judy Garland day. Ginnie has been waiting for this day for a long time and her trip has officially begun. We looked at all the exibits, read all the information, watched the movie on the ruby slippers and toured the house. It seems the ruby slippers were stolen from the museum several years ago and there has been no hint of them since. There are a million theries but the crime has not yet been solved. Ginnie really liked the experience, so glad to have finally seen it. ... read more

blog 08-17-17 Grand Rapids We made it! Our goal all this week has been to get to Grand Rapids, MN and 4 days and 1237 miles later we're here. We left this morning in a foggy drizzle after several inches of rain fell overnight. It is a real circus to walk 3 dogs and then get them cleaned off enough to bring into the house. Mother Nature helped with that problem by providing a huge puddle right outside the door to rinse the mud off paws. We took our time getting started and were off by 10:30 and ready for the detour in Superior. The campground owner had given us a map and directions as to how to navigate the construction. I sure hope this dear lady never leaves Superior if she thinks that was a ... read more
