In one of my first blogs, I said "it's one thing to say you're going to live in another country for a year and entirely another to actually do it", or something like that. Well, we did it. We're home, we're safe, we're grateful. I wanted to share some re-cap and re-entry thoughts with you. I blogged about my unsightly tooth gap, weight gain and bad haircuts. I've decided to live with the gap for awhile. If I don't look in the mirror, it doesn't bother me at all! I got a fantastic cut and color from my local stylist, Brenda, [View Full Entry]

The next day we got up and walked down the market, walking up and down the aisles buying sugar snap peas, strawberries, cucumbers and bread for our dinner later that night. We also bought some Amish cinnamon rolls to support the Amish, and because Can loved the guys hat. After strolling for about an hour, we went to the Capitol building for a scheduled tour, lasting about 45 minutes, and taking us around the really beautiful Wisconsin state capitol…with the tour allowing us to see rooms we wouldn’t have been able to go into otherwise and learn a little about Madisons [View Full Entry]

Firstly, I know I promised photos for this blog but they're not here. This computer is a POS (sorry, Mom, but this isn't anything new to you) and the program that is supposed to download the photos from the camera onto the computer is not working and I can't figure it out so unfortunately the photos are going to have to wait for tomorrow. We're going to buy some stuff tomorrow that will allow me to easily download the photos onto the computer and get them on here for everyone to see. That being said, today was another long, but good [View Full Entry]

One has to start somewhere... My name is Mike and this is my first entry. Louanne and I plan to be traveling through Central America from September 2009 to April 2010. I am uncertain to what extent an application for a leave of absence is compatible with real adventure but here goes. Please stay posted for planning updates. [View Full Entry]

Day 4. Oshkosh WI to Luverne, MN. We took the pups to Best Friends Dog Park, a 9 acre off leash park in Oshkosh. They met a bunch of other dogs, including a black German short haired pointer whom they enjoyed playing with. Then we drove through the rest of WI, lots of farms, wide open flat fields as far as the eye can see. We crossed into Minnesota, and stopped at Great Bluffs State Park. This is on a bluff overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. The state run campsites there are very well organized, with running water, grills, and hot [View Full Entry]

Dear Family, Friends, Relatives, and Rock Stars, This Thursday i will be leaving for China. I will be spending the majority of the summer there doing field research on the impact of the Qinghai-Tibet railway, which happens to be the first railway to link China and Tibet as well as the world's highest. For more info see the link below: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qinghai-Tibet_Railway In order to do this i will be bicycling from the Chinese city of Xining in the Qinghai province to Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, alongside the railway - about a 2000 km journey...or [View Full Entry]

As usual, most days are either morning or afternoon shift we work first; the morning shift feeds bears and makes food, then the afternoon shift will finish the food or do outdoor work like clean sites or make bear beds. Then we hang around doing some work and feed bears as they come in . At 3:30 we eat dinner then prepare for the visitors to come in from 5pm-8 or 9pm. I prefer working admissions as i just sell a few tickets and then read my book. We have a few new volunteers: 2 girls from CA i don't have [View Full Entry]

We took the scenic route into Minneapolis on Friday through the South suburbs to unload my suff into storage, before heading to the hotel. The hotel was very nice, although we thought one Concierge, Kathryn, might be a indentured servant because she was always there working every time we left and came back. However, she finally got the day off on Monday when we decided to stay an extra day to find the perfect apartment as I did not believe I had been thorough enough over the weekend. However, I am getting ahead of myself. After checking into the hotel on [View Full Entry]
