blog 08-17-17 Grand Rapids
We made it! Our goal all this week has been to get to Grand Rapids, MN and 4 days and 1237 miles later we're here.
We left this morning in a foggy drizzle after several inches of rain fell overnight. It is a real circus to walk 3 dogs and then get them cleaned off enough to bring into the house. Mother Nature helped with that problem by providing a huge puddle right outside the door to rinse the mud off paws.
We took our time getting started and were off by 10:30 and ready for the detour in Superior. The campground owner had given us a map and directions as to how to navigate the construction. I sure hope this dear lady never leaves Superior if she thinks that was a terrible detour. We followed her directions which were also the truck detour route that was very well marked and we were off for Grand Rapids.
It was a light rain and fog that greeted us along the way where we saw nothing more than trees and an occasional town of 700 or so. The trees were of various sizes depending on
the soil and whether they were standing in march lands or not. We kept looking for moose but didn't see any, not anything else either.
About 12:20 we rolled into town and found the campground with no trouble. We unhooked the car in the parking lot, the first time it's left the camper's hitch since we left home, and drove to our designated site #4. To my delight we are overlooking the Mississippi River with just a few other campsites in this park. It is an Army Corp of Engineers campground and the price is normally $25. a night but since we have the Golden Age Pass we get the campsite for half price or $25. for 2 nights. What a bargain, we even have electric!
It had stopped raining so after lunch we walked the dogs and got the lay of the land. Then it was time for a nap, a luxury we have not had since before leaving home. It was sweet.
Refreshed and eager we headed for town but stopped at the dam first to walk accross the Mississippi. The rapids are no more as there are a series of dams, we'll find out
more tomorrow. Found a Walmart and got a few necessities and 4 ears of fresh corn at a stand which was proclaimed to be the best corn anywhere. We had just polished off 8 ears of Jersey corn that Ginnie had brought so we were eager to compair. Minnasota corn would have to be pretty special to beat Jersey corn.
We passed Judy Garlands Museum, sang "Over the Rainbow" and headed home knowing we would be at the museum first thing in the morning.
Well by this time it was after 5 pm so we packed some cheese and crackers, our drinks and cushions and headed for the dock which is just down from our camper. The sky was brightening so we were hopeful some critters would come out and show themselves. A lovely couple came and joined us to talk about their travels and ours. They are full-time campers traveling in an Air Stream trailer and working at different campgrounds. They shared some great tips for us and also told us the proper pronouncation for Beatrice, NB where we will be viewing the eclipse, it's b AT trice.
Just as we were about to come in
for dinner the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the grasses along the shore. Picture.
For dinner we had chicken for me, lamb for Ginnie, baked potato and our fresh corn that was good but definetly not like Jersey corn. The dogs got their evening walk where Ginnie was surrounded by a family wanting to see the big dogs. Both of them are theropy dogs so they were ready, willing and able to say HI to everyone.
Back at the camper (George) we settled in for the night. OH, we did hear the loon that is reported to be living around here.
