blog 08-18-17 Judy Garland Museum It cleared for real in the morning and the temp was delightfully cool. We were in no hurry this morning to get started so we took it easy, enjoyed a leisuely walk with the dogs, enjoyed breakfast then headed for town. It was Judy Garland day. Ginnie has been waiting for this day for a long time and her trip has officially begun. We looked at all the exibits, read all the information, watched the movie on the ruby slippers and toured the house. It seems the ruby slippers were stolen from the museum several years ago and there has been no hint of them since. There are a million theries but the crime has not yet been solved. Ginnie really liked the experience, so glad to have finally seen it. ... read more

blog 08-17-17 Grand Rapids We made it! Our goal all this week has been to get to Grand Rapids, MN and 4 days and 1237 miles later we're here. We left this morning in a foggy drizzle after several inches of rain fell overnight. It is a real circus to walk 3 dogs and then get them cleaned off enough to bring into the house. Mother Nature helped with that problem by providing a huge puddle right outside the door to rinse the mud off paws. We took our time getting started and were off by 10:30 and ready for the detour in Superior. The campground owner had given us a map and directions as to how to navigate the construction. I sure hope this dear lady never leaves Superior if she thinks that was a ... read more

Today was probably our most relaxing day on the bikes, even though we rode for almost 500 kms. On the road at 9:30 am from Devil's Lake ND en route to Grand Rapids, MN. It was a beautiful clear day, with sunshine forecast for the day We made not one but two stops into WallyWorld in search of green food for a picnic lunch. Found it at the second superstore. No grocery stores on the route. I'm getting alot of vibration on the bike, especially at the higher speeds, and desperately needed to improvise the gloves to give my hands a break, so bought some shoe heel gels and shoved them into my palms. Ahhh, relief. Could actually feel my fingers at the end of the day. Got a much warmer, fuzzier feeling riding through Minnesota. ... read more

(Bluewater Covenant Bible Camp) I stand corrected on the men’s projects~~I said they were enclosing rooms in one cabin, and making the rooms larger in the other, but it was quickly explained to me that they opened the rooms in both cabins. The cabins are mainly used for staff, and they wanted a larger area to hold meetings and Bible studies. Ok, now it’s correct! If you are squeamish about mice, you may want to skip this next paragraph. We have been fighting mice since June, and I’m just plain sick of it. They’re not my favorite thing in the world, but I don’t go screaming-crazy when I see one, however, after four months of catching them and keeping every edible thing (which Bob would describe as “Why don’t we have any food in this house?”) ... read more

(Blue Water Covenant Bible Camp) This project has been different in the fact that we’ve spent nearly every weekend in Mankato with Megan’s family….what a treat for us. They’re only five hours away, which everyone up here thinks is reaaaallly far, but being from Montana we know that’s just down the road! That’s one of the reasons we requested this project. But it has meant that we’ve done less touring of the area, so you’re not going to get overly familiar with northern Minnesota from me! That said, I do need to tell you that it’s just gorgeous here right now; last weekend when we came back the trees were yellows and oranges, and two days later we went into town and the maple trees had started to change, so the landscape has added bright red, ... read more

(Blue Water Covenant Bible Camp) Well, from June to September; from Hawaii to Minnesota~~quite a jump no matter how you look at it! This was an exceptional summer for us, full of family and friends, and a month longer than usual, because we didn’t take a project last May. So when the end of August appeared, we were very ready to get back to real life. But first we spent a week in the Black Hills with our daughter Megan and her family~~nothing like seeing something so grand through the eyes of kids! From the helicopter to the bottom of the cave, it was all thrilling! (plus a tour through a Black Hills gold jewelry manufacturing facility for us girls, of course!) And then we were off to Grand Rapids, in northern Minnesota. On our way ... read more

We continued along US 2 through northern Minnesota. This area is more and more like home. We’re seeing trees that have their bright fall colors. It was a surprise to see the Mississippi River this far north. It’s much smaller than when we saw it further south. We camped along the banks of the Mississippi River near Grand Rapids at Pokegama Recreation Area, a Forest Service campground. ... read more
