Blog 08-16-17 Superior, MN
We have been traveling over 300 miles every day and have so far gotten to Superior, WI which is 2 hours short of our destination of Grand Rapids, MN. We just couldn't do the last 2 hours and it's a good thing, it started raining just after we set up for the night. We had a very relaxing evening and plan to have showers and enjoy the rest of the night. We are going to see the Judy Garland museum in Grand Rapids where she was born and spent her youth.
The biggest obstacle was going around Chicago and thank heaven Ginnie was driving, the traffic was terrible. I had sweaty palms just trying to follow our route. The interstate from Chicago to Rockford was brand new, they didn't even have the signs up yet, but the road was beautiful (6 to 8 lanes) and we buzzed right along.
Speaking of roads, the worst one was 80 in IN, and it was a toll road, we had to pay to get jarred to death. Other than that the roads have been really good with some construction but not crazy.
Ginnie and I both
loved WI with it's rolling hills, red barns and picturesque farms. Lots and lots of corn, soy beans, cows and horses with goats in the field. We saw several fields with corn but the tops were cut off. I can only imagine it will be used for silage (cow feed) but I will try to find out.
We have started jotting down odd things that we are seeing along the way like the tosselless corn. Yesterday we saw a doe with her fawn standing in the road. When Ginnie blew the horn they both took off like they were shot out of a cannon, leaping over the weeds and bounding across the field. We saw a gray fox booking it across the road and a huge bald eagle standing in the top of a tree. There was a temporary road for constructing a high tention power line made by placing extra long railroad tie like planks in succesion until a road bed was established. Seems pretty pains-taking to me. Then they had a solid surface to run trucks to put up these metal 100 ft towers. Then they put pullies on the towers to run the line. There was a
helicoptor hovering next to the tower with a man standing on the skid installing the pulley. It blew our minds to think of the skill required to accomplish that feat. Had to see it to believe it.
Sign along the way "Leave the buzz for the bees - drive sober".
Tonight we are staying in a campground in Superior, WI near Delueth. We just couldn't do another 2 hrs today so we are resting up to hit Grand Rapids tomorrow.
The boys have been terrific and are settling into a routine. Breakfast, out for a walk, laying down in the camper, stop for changing drivers and out for a walk, then they really settle for 3 hrs or so. They are enjoying each others company but Watson has to keep continual watch on his tail, it gets stepped on on occasion, but he's holding his own. He likes having brothers.
Headwaters of the Mississippi tomorrow, can't wait to see it.
