Blog 08-16-17 Superior, MN We have been traveling over 300 miles every day and have so far gotten to Superior, WI which is 2 hours short of our destination of Grand Rapids, MN. We just couldn't do the last 2 hours and it's a good thing, it started raining just after we set up for the night. We had a very relaxing evening and plan to have showers and enjoy the rest of the night. We are going to see the Judy Garland museum in Grand Rapids where she was born and spent her youth. The biggest obstacle was going around Chicago and thank heaven Ginnie was driving, the traffic was terrible. I had sweaty palms just trying to follow our route. The interstate from Chicago to Rockford was brand new, they didn't even have the ... read more

DICK BONG America finally got things about right in a combat airplane when “Kelly” Johnson at what would later become the famed Skunk Works came up with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. It was a goofy looking plane and it was unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity, or neglect on the part of its pilot, but it was highly capable in many combat rolls. It was designed as a heavy fighter, but it could be used as a level bomber, a dive bomber, or a bomber escort. It was also excellent for ground support and for photo recon. The P-38 had a maximum speed of 414 mph, an operational ceiling of 40000 feet, and a range of 1300 miles. Twin Allison engines with counter-rotating props gave it a high rate of climb, and good high speed ... read more

Today is my last day in WI until I make my quick 4 day drive from MN to the Catskill Mountains of NY next week. It was a fairly low key day. I went to a couple of State Parks and saw some waterfalls. I drove out to Wisconsin Point this afternoon - basically a very long sand bar. At the end is the Superior Entry into one of the busiest ports in the US. It is the western terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Cargos of iron ore, coal, petroleum and grain are loaded here and shipped all over the world. Unfortunately there were no cargo ships entering or departing while I was out there this afternoon. Not sure what kind of phone and internet service I'll have up in Orr, MN (hopefully there will ... read more

Gretings and salutations from the far north of Wisconsin. My journey continues to go smoothly with pleasant surprises along the way. Saturday I had my first rain since encountering a bit in Tennessee a week ago. It let up while I walked Chessy and packed up in Madison. I drove in rain for 30 minutes. Shortly after the skies cleared for the dive north. Had one brief shower last night about dark and another surprise storm while I was exploring over in MN today. Even had some small hail for a minute or so. When I pulled into the campground last night I had several interesting experiences. I'm parked next to another Allegro Bay FRED (FRont Engine Diesel). Had a fun time talking with the folks. Theirs is a 2008 as is mine. Then I noticed ... read more
