These are the voyages of Bruce and Chessy (my Chocolate Lab and faithful travel companion) in the SS Denison Bay and Ike. The SS Denison Bay is my Class A motorhome. Ike is my trusty Jeep Liberty Renegade which becomes my "Toad" behind the RV. On some trips Taz - my 2005 Miata Mazdaspeed travels with me on a car trailer.

Thanks for checking in as we explore the roads less traveled!

Hello from Texas. My how time has flown. This has been a great trip, even though I wasn't able to post as often as I wanted to. One would think internet accessablility would get better each year, but I seemed to always have challenges at the campgrounds. Combine that with some long days and the result - blogs few and far between. Even though I didn't get photos of Mt. Ranier and Mt. Hood, I saw both of them along with Mt. Shasta while driving from Seattle to Napa. As was the case most of the trip, I wish I could have spent more time at each location. Napa was a lot of fun and I got to shoot with photography friends from the Bay area while in Napa. They also came down to shoot with ... read more

Have had a GREAT time here on Whidbey Island. It started off with a drive off the island up to Bellingham. I had a nice visit and shared a meal with my cousin Danny's daughter Mary. We took a walking and diving tour of town after dinner. The weather really cooperated for our iPhone photo workshop. Initially they were calling for rain all weekend. Fortunately they were wrong. We only had a little drizzle Monday but were in class all day today. Beautiful sunrise and sunset the days we were out in the field photographing. Today (Tuesday) I'm having a little work done on the Jeep before heading down to Seattle for dinner with a group of iPhoneography Facebook friends. Then I'll start working down to Napa Valley, CA and on to Yosemite NP. Hope you ... read more

This long lost traveler has not fallen off the face of the earth. But I did stand on a cliff Tuesday overlooking the Pacific Ocean from the extreme north western tip of the Olympic Peninsula. The past four weeks have been a nonstop, full speed ahead adventure. It started with 2500 miles from NC to CA in 6 days. I learned a ton of stuff at the CA Photo Festival in San Luis Obispo and then began to work my way up the coast. Visited the Hearst Castle on my way to Monterey and then up to San Francisco. I managed to get a sinus infection along the way and had a few down days in SF while the antibiotics kicked in. Then it was back to sightseeing. After SF I went up to Eureka, CA ... read more

Greetings from New Mexico! I've covered 1360 miles since departing NC on Wednesday morning. I realized along the way that I will have driven the entire length of I-40 when I get to the western end in CA on Monday. Granted I didn't depart on this trip from Wilmington, NC but I have driven that segment many times. Really a little of AZ and the CA sections is all that will be new. I stumbled across a bit of trivia today. I learned that 100 degrees west longitude is the border between Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas! Saw a sign around Erick, OK mentioning a museum of the 100 degrees longitude so I researched with my gps and Texas map. I'm more than halfway to my initial destination - San Luis Obispo, CA. Only 1115 ... read more

Greetings from Cleveland. It's been a fun but busy time since I last posted an entry. Three fairly long days and one short day (but all uneventful) to get to the Catskills of NY. Had an AWESOME time at the iPhone workshop. Met some really nice folks and learned a lot. At the end of the class I printed two of my iPhone images taken near Grandfather Mountain. I finished working on them in class. Can't wait to get home, frame them and start printing more. Spent a night in the Finger Lakes Region of NY on the way to Cleveland. Today I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thursday I head to Indianapolis for my last stop before heading back to NC on Monday. It's going to be a great weekend meeting ... read more

The bear photo workshop was a total blast. There's no way words and photos can adequately describe my time at the sanctuary. I learned much about black bears and have a new appreciation for them. For 4 days we walked among the bears photographing them and learning about their behaviors. Some of the bears there are 20-30 years old, all the way down to cubs born earlier this year. The yearlings - around 2-3 years old were the most inquisitive. It was amazing to watch the mothers send their cubs up a tree when other bears came to close to them or something else startled them. The bears are preparing for hibernation so they were eating a lot. Yes they feed the bears at the sanctuary, but it's because Vince Shute fed them for three decades ... read more

This will be short and sweet. Having a great time here. Learning lots about bears and taking lots of photos. Great group of photographers in our workshop. We start at 6 am and end at dark. Short break in the middle of the day, but usually uploading images to computer, etc. Here are a couple of images I worked on today. More when I have time. My thoughts and prayers are with folks on the East Coast impacted with Hurricane Irene. Hope all are safe and no property damage. Bruce... read more

Believe it or not, I've actually been 'cooling my jets' since I arrived in Orr yesterday. I haven't left the campground, although I'm planning a trip 'into town' (about 7 miles) in a bit to check out the area. Other than being a very windy day, it's a nice summer day here. Some clouds are rolling in, but it's low humidity and 70 degrees. I have windows and the door open in the RV and the AC is off. Hope I can bring some of this weather home with me! I spent the morning reviewing images I've taken with my newest lens - a fisheye - during the trip. I did some basic editing. A few are HDR merge of 3 images to get the complete range of light. All were taken with my Canon camera ... read more

August 23rd 2011

Greetings from the land of 10,000 lakes - Minnesota. Actually I learned there are closer to 12,000 lakes of at least 10 acres (back in NC I think those 10 acre 'lakes' would probably be called a pond) and around 15,000 if you count those smaller than 10 acres. Anyway... I'm settled in for a week here in Orr, MN. It was an easy 125 mile drive today. I delayed my departure and waited until some early morning thunderstorms passed. In Duluth, I stopped to buy a computer cable I inadvertently left at home. I could have made do without it, but it will greatly assist in simplifying my redundant backups I do on the road. Yep I back all my images up to 2 separate external hard drives before formatting my memory cards. I had ... read more

August 22nd 2011

Today is my last day in WI until I make my quick 4 day drive from MN to the Catskill Mountains of NY next week. It was a fairly low key day. I went to a couple of State Parks and saw some waterfalls. I drove out to Wisconsin Point this afternoon - basically a very long sand bar. At the end is the Superior Entry into one of the busiest ports in the US. It is the western terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Cargos of iron ore, coal, petroleum and grain are loaded here and shipped all over the world. Unfortunately there were no cargo ships entering or departing while I was out there this afternoon. Not sure what kind of phone and internet service I'll have up in Orr, MN (hopefully there will ... read more
