What a great week! This week has most definitely been my favourite cabin so far. I had a group of 10 girls aged 11-13 and they were all brilliant. A few of the girls had pretty horrible backgrounds, one recently had her mother pass away from heart failure and her dad was accused to shooting someone, another girl explained that camp was the only place she felt truly safe and that's why she comes back each year. Those are he stories which really make me feel great about this job, that I am able to help make these girls have at least one fantastic week in summer and that they can look forward to it each year and not have to worry about anything and just be a kid. On Friday we had a big staff ... read more

This week has been one of my favourites so far. I worked with this girl named Turi and we are a lot alike. we had one of the youngest girl cabins and they were all fantastic. It was so much fun and they were adorable. one of the guys here, Taylor, lives in river falls in Wisconsin and he invited a group of us to visit on Friday night. We went out for a few drinks around the town which was a lot of fun! everyone is so laid back and very friendly which was great. People do not dress up like we do back home but it was a nice casual evening. The next day the camp director invited us all to play a game of soccer and have a barbecue at camp, it was ... read more

Happy Thursday!Long time no write on here....When I began this blog I thought it was originally going to be for my trip to Australia and leave it at that. Soon after that trip I knew I wanted to travel more and share my stories. With that said I used this blog for my trip to Israel in October 2013. I have now decided to use this blog for more than just my travels abroad, but rather share my insights, teaching experiences, any thoughts I want to share, and of course to spread peace and love to all of you! If you need some uplifting reading in your day, come read my blog and I hope you can end with a smile on your face. Many people ask me how I afford all of the traveling I ... read more

So reality is finally setting in. I guess it is a big, "what are we doing" and "we can't wait!" So being this is our first blog about our trip I will introduce us. There are four of us on this trip, myself (Brenda) my husband Gerson, and our sweet boys Ethan (2.5 y.o) and Owen (6 months old). So both Gerson and I have always loved travelling and we have both travelled a lot, however that was before the 2 little rats came along. So here comes the trip of our life time. In a nutshell this is our itinerary: Minnesota - Los Angeles (1 day lay over to see friends and beach it up a bit), Los angeles to Bangkok (for a weekend) Bangkok to Bali (I think 12 days should probably double check ... read more

the past few weeks have been so busy so I have been a little slack at keeping in contact with family and friends back home. Last week was the camp healthy you week where kids that have high BMIs come for the week and learn about healthy eating and lifestyle. It was a great week, the girls cabin I had were great. Each morning they spent an hour with nurse staff and nutritionists going over healthy lifestyle factors and some counselor staff were put in this education time. I unfortunately was not part of this education time and I wish that I was because I would have benefitted a lot from it. The food at camp was specially prepared and the portion sizes were limited which I enjoyed because it wasn't buffet style, although the food ... read more

This was a tough week! Each year we have one week dedicated to kids with asthma and it's called camp super kids and it is always full to the max. On top of a full camp, we have roughly 40 nurses and 10 or so behavioral management staff that stay at camp for the week too. Four guys from a other YMCA camp came to help out this week, as did some staff from last year. A lot of the campers had behavioral issues which makes for a challenging week. I was initially assigned to be a 'floater' which meant I stay with the management staff in a separate cabin and help out where I can with the other cabins. However, on the second day, one of the boy counsellors had to leave due to family ... read more

This was a really tough week! It was the first full week with the kids and the camp was almost full. I had a group of 11-14 year old girls so it was very different from last week where the girls were 8-9. One of the girls arrived a day late which made it hard for all of us as we had gotten to know each other well in that first day. She was also the oldest in the cabin and had a rough upbringing so was a negative influence on the other girls and she didn't really want to be at camp. This week I took arts and crafts in the mornings and swimming in the afternoons. They were awesome activities to take and such fun! we have a giant inflatable trampoline in the lake ... read more

The first set of kids arrived today! They call it a sampler week as the kids are only here until Wednesday and a traditional camp goes to Friday. Each counsellor gets paired up with another counsellor and we sleep in the same cabins as the kids. I got paired up with Hannah and Ellyn and we were with 7 girls aged between 8-11. We were put in a cabin called Blackfoot (number 13) and is apparently haunted but we didn't seen anything. The girls were mostly well behaved. We woke up every morning at 6.15 to get ourselves ready and then wake the kids at 6.30 so they can get ready. We then went for a run and jumped in the lake each morning before breakfast which is served at 8am. I ran and jumped in ... read more

Last night Emily had a house party which was super fun! After the kids left camp on Wednesday, Hannah and Morgan drove me to there houses where I showered and met there parents. Everyone is super nice! It was also so nice to have a proper shower in a house as opposed to the camp showers. We then went to Emily's for drinks and then crashed at Alex's house (AP). The next day Kara picked myself Kris and Khoa up from camp and picked Lauren up from her house and they took us around Minneapolis. We started at an art museum which was really nice. I'm not much of an art or museum person but it's good to see these things when travelling. We looked at a gorgeous cathedral and had a picnic at the outdoor ... read more

The rest of the staff (other camp counsellors like myself) arrived on Friday and it was nice to be at camp with other people who hadn't been here before either. I got put in a different cabin with five other girls which I really liked because I wasn't so lonely at night anymore. Staff training started that week and we played a big game of four cones which we play every Sunday night when campers arrive. We then had a campfire and sang songs and did some skits. Steve from Australia arrived today and it reminded me of home a lot! Staff training week involved a whole bunch of team building/bonding activities. It made us all get to know each other really quick which is nice and also important as the first round of campers arrive ... read more
