What a great week! This week has most definitely been my favourite cabin so far. I had a group of 10 girls aged 11-13 and they were all brilliant. A few of the girls had pretty horrible backgrounds, one recently had her mother pass away from heart failure and her dad was accused to shooting someone, another girl explained that camp was the only place she felt truly safe and that's why she comes back each year. Those are he stories which really make me feel great about this job, that I am able to help make these girls have at least one fantastic week in summer and that they can look forward to it each year and not have to worry about anything and just be a kid.
On Friday we had a big staff banquet which we called "prom" and we asked other Staff members to the prom with us in front of all the kids. I went with Taylor, who is a great guy and friend. It's not much of a prom, but more like a dinner. At the start of summer we all picked staff names out of a hat and we had to
buy that person a small gift worth $10-$15 and present it to them at dinner. I got this girl named Mia and she loves tea so I bought her a walrus thing that you put tea leaves in and it sits in your tea while you drink it. Theresa had me and she bought me a gift card to Dairy Queen (a yummy ice cream shop) and a Minnesota t shirt which was awesome! After dinner we all had a few drinks at one of the staff members house (Josh). The following day I was feeling really gross from all the camp food and from a few drinks last night so I went for a nice long run, it was so nice and refreshing as I hardly had any time to workout during the week when the kids are here unless I wake up super super early and go for a morning run. I somehow hurt my ankle while running though so I will be taking it easy this week which I'm upset about because I enjoy running and it definitely keeps me sane - it's a bit of me time which I most definitely need. Saturday night I went
out to watch 'My Fair Lady' at the Guthrie theatre which is one of the biggest theatres in America. It was absolutely amazing! It's the first time I have seen a theatre show and I loved it, suprisingly. Lauren (one of my good friends at camp) works and studies theatre so she knew a lot of the cast members and we had the opportunity to talk to some of them after the show! When i get to New York I would love to see more shows!
Sadly Steve from Australia left on Sunday lunch time as he had to go back home and start his proper engineering job at one of the rigs. It was a sad day as we had become so close as our cultures are very similar and we were like brother and sister. He looked out for me a lot, and was the only one who truly understood what it was like to be homesick etc. But we have arranged for me to visit him in Adelaide at some point and he can come to Wellington as neither of us have been to each other's home towns!
This week I
have been put on a sampler cabin week which means the kids arrive on Sunday like normal but leave on Wednesday as opposed to Friday like normal. This means I get a break and Lauren has offered to take me back to her house for Wednesdays and Thursday night which is very nice of her! We plan on relaxing and watching DVDs which I'm very excited for! I also got my first pay cheque so I can finally go to the bank and cash it 😊
I've attached some photos from the staff banquet and also of our new water rave that we have in the lake. It is so much fun! Today was such a hot day, rea he'd about 105 degrees farenheit and was super humid. I taught swimming this morning and we had this photo shoot with a whole bunch of the kids on the new water rave for promotional stuff. It was so hot tonight that all the cabins jumped in the lake after dinner and we saw the sunset - truly beautiful!
