In March, 1993, I visited Michael in Red Wing, Minnesota, where he and Karen were living. It was my first time in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Of course, my purpose was to spend time with my son, not to grind out a paper. In Red Wing, we bowled, saw a movie and went down to the Mississippi River. I flew down to Las Vegas. I returned to Minnesota in August, 1994. Michael and I saw the New York Yankees play the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. We moved from the third baseline to behind home plate around to center field. It was blue seats and green artificial turf. The Twins won. We saw Yankees Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs, Paul O'Neill and Jim Leyritz. I bought Michael a Yankees cap. In Red Wing, we climbed Barn ... read more

Headed to Africa today. Highlights included 1) Packed and repacked 3 times the backpack and the roly-poly suitcase named "Elvis" for all the rock and roll; (2) cleared out email and finished chores at home; (3) Steve took me to the airport around noon and we met up with all the others going; (4) Was asked to buy flashdrives for those in Karagwe so spent $170. out of pocket - gotta watch that; (5) Took off at 4:30 and sat next to a young man headed to London for a semester. This blog contains excerpts from my hand-written diary from five years ago. Since that time I have been to Africa mutliple times and therefore have shyness about some of my perceptions and ideas that I no longer hold. But that is growth so I will leave those embarrassing things in. The purpose of my university's program in Africa was to install solar-powered water pasteurizers at two secondary schools in the remote NW area of Tanzania. I would travel with 5 engineering students (seniors and top of the class I'm told). I have always been engineer-y so we shall see what this trip brings. Highlights for today: (1) Dealing with end-of-semester business (grades), etc.; 2) Younger son, Erik, not feeling well; (3) preparing for Christmas; (4) Feeling 'called' to go to Africa. Engineers on the trip: Prof: ... read more

I'm trying to recount the days leading up to the moment I found out I was actually going to China. So here goes. After months of anticipation, dreaming of plans that I may or may not need to execute, and those days where I pictured myself there already, wanting to do nothing more than blow this joint (really, we've all had days like that, haven't we?), it was time to start making it a reality or be crushed. Time to lay it out and admit to the white lies I was using as the backup plan I used to mask my odd behavior, or make those white lies my reality. ("Yes, I'm off to the Goodwill/Cheapo again. Gotta get ride of stuff if I'm going to move next year--no, I'm not sure quite where yet, but ... read more

I am continuously asked the same questions by people I know regarding my up and coming adventure: 1. China?! 2. How long have you been thinking about this? 3. Are you going to do a blog or mass emails--you'd better write to me! 4. When do you leave--I'm sooo going to come visit! 1. So, yes, China. I was an Eastern Asian Studies minor in college. Despite the fact that I would love to visit Japan (and the rest of Asia) someday, China grabbed hold and hasn't let go. 2. I've been planning this since last April--scheming and secretly telling people on a need-to-know basis, working up the nerve to tell me parents I want to move out of the country. Jacques casually mentioned to me one night after class that he had a friend teaching ... read more

Lots of thought has gone into deciding where to serve. About a year in the making! My thoughts on any trip started when I returned from Spain when I was a study abroad student. I knew that once I graduated, I wanted to serve oversees somewhere, but I did not know where. Early on in my senior year, I came across an organization, Friends of the Orphans, also known as Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos. I put the org. in the back of my mind...not knowing if I would serve with them. There were many fabulous organizations and then also deciding which country to serve with. However, amidst all the organizations out there, the select people God has placed in my life this past year as really been instrumental. Through unique circumstances and through key select people, I ... read more

MINNESOTA Settling in to life in the mid-west....in Minne-SOODA! Sounds pretty random, huh?! Never did I think I would move here! The idea of going to MN never even crossed my mind in the past...& now I'm living here...crazy! (although I'm really not here all that much). But I love it! Every where you turn, there's a lake. And the trees in the fall are gorgeous! So much nature & wild life here. The other day I saw an albino squirrel & I already told you about deer in our yard! My mom, nana & aunt pam came up to visit at the beginning of Oct. It was my nana's 72 birthday so we got to celebrate it all together! We went to Stillwater (a really cute, quaint town next to the St. Croix River ... read more
