Today we got an extremely early start. We were dressed and ready to go by 7:20 a.m. We went out on the Four Winds boat again to take Whale ID pictures. Unfortunatly we didn't see as many whales. We encountered a mother and calf pair and the calf was getting really excited and started breaching like crazy. Breaching is when the whale throws its whole body out of the water. Sometimes it looks like a skipping rock because it breaches a couple times in a row. But all the whales were swimming away from us so we started to speak whale "COomme BaaAckk," and they did =). We also listened to the hydrophone again, there were several males singing their hearts out to the females. We headed back to land and had a picnic on the ... read more

In August of 2004 I visited Kauai and I wanted to do the Kalalau Trail after hearing about it from friends and reading that it was one of the best coastal hikes in the world. Well, in short it is amazing! Most guidebooks typically recommend 3-5 days to do the trail. Well, I don't listen well--I had it in my mind that I would do it all in one day--11 miles out and 11 miles back. But, it is not really the distance that is so daunting but the fact that the trail narrows so much in places and is exposed on the cliffs. And after a number of good rains and washouts it can present some nerve-racking sections. So, I stayed in the beautiful little town of Hanalei and drove over to the trail head ... read more

Today was another beautiful day on the island of Hawaii. We had a late start around 9ish, we all gathered in the van to go to the Volcano National Park. We drove 6,000 ft up Mauna Loa with Lehua and Kaumakaiwa Kamara'ole. They talked to us about their culture and lifestyle. After we drove half way back down we stopped to make a lei made of ferns, as an offering for Pele, the Goddess of Fire. Then we drove to Kilauea Caldera Crater. Kaum sang a permission song to ask if we can be on the island. Then we threw the lei into the sulfer smelling crater. After we got permission to be on the island we drove to the steam vents. Steam vents are water in the ground that gets heated up by the lava ... read more

We only have limited access to a computer, but wanted to get some pics up on the web for folks to see what we have been up to! We arrived on February 2 and have been staying at a vacation rental in Kailua (on the windward side of Oahu). The first 5 or so days in Kailua were pretty rainy. Since then Oahu has given us some beautiful weather! We spent Feb 10 - 14 in Hilo on the Big Island (Hawaii). Bill was working and the girls did their best to see the sights. We're back on Oahu now, searching for a permanent address. Prices are outrageous!!! We've had some nice hikes and beautiful beach days. I'll get more specifics up as soon as I can! Oh, and Gabbi lost her first tooth today!!! (Pics ... read more

We groggily left the dorms at 4:45 a.m and headed to airport. 3 hours later we arrived in Anchorage. In Juneau, Tasha's cell phone escaped from her pocket and slid down to the back of the plane. The flight attendant discovered the phone and took it. She brought it into the Juneau airport, it is currently being fedexed. In Anchorage we had some grub at the Village Inn. We left Anchorage at 3 p.m. and started the excrutiating 5.5 hour flight to Honolulu. We arrived at about 8 p.m. and got our luggage. That was when we realized Nia left the laptop on the plane! But thankfully it was recovered. We loaded up into a big o' van and headed to the Honolulu Airport Hotel. After we settled down and ate some pizza, we fell right ... read more

We had two more days with us to visit places we hadn’t been to in Oahu. We were somewhat tired from previous two really hectic days. So, we decided to take the day little bit lightly. We walked around the area in the morning and had a nice breakfast. We signed up for a guided half-day tour ”Natural Highlights of Oahu Adventure” with Oahu Nature Tours. We thought it would be nice to sit back and relax while the guide will take us and talk about some of the attractions of Oahu. The guided tour was really nice. The guide was really informative and interesting. Good thing it was a small group, which gave us plenty of flexibility and personal attention. We drove through the Diamond Head state park and reached the Hanauma Bay lookout. Hanauma ... read more

Hawai is truly magnificent place with great natural beauty surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and beautiful beaches along with scenic rainforests and mountains. To go along with this the natives are perhaps amongest the friendliest and most laid back people in the world. The term "hang loose" which is often asscociated with the island is very apparent as soon as you land at the airport and are welcomed by the locals with "Aloha" and a huge smile. The hotel that my friend and I stayed the Hotel Bamboo was situated on the outskirts of the Wakki beach with a a few minutes stroll to the local markets, restaurants and the beach, the hotel provided great views with the beach and the ocean in one direction and the rainforests and mountains in the other. The first exciting ... read more

We spent the fourth day at the Polynesian Cultural Center near the north shore of Oahu. They provided us transportation from our hotel. It is a living museum of the culture of Polynesian islands. This cultural center represents seven islands of the Polynesia: Hawaii, Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Aotearoa, and Marquesas. Polynesian cultural center is divided into above mentioned villages. All the villages exhibits and conducts activities of respective cultures. They also participate in some common activities like Canoe Pageant “Rainbows of Paradise” and a multicultural show "Horizons: Where the Sea Meets the Sky". There is also an IMAX theater, a lagoon for canoe ride, and an open-air auditorium. There are several options for food and beverages also. In a way, this is like a theme park without rides! But, more entertaining in its own way! ... read more

We wanted to celebrate our first Valentine’s Day after the wedding in style… something different… and the answer was - Hawaii Volcano National Park! It is the home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world - Kilauea. This national park is located on the Hawaii’s Big Island. The Big Island, also known as the Island of Hawai’i or the Big Isle, is the biggest island of the State of Hawaii and still growing! It is also the youngest amongst the all. Nearest airport from the national park is in the city of Hilo. Hilo is approximately 36 miles away from the national park. Hilo airport is a very small airport. However, it has number of flights operating quite frequently everyday between Hilo and other islands (mainly Oahu). There is also a commuters’ terminal ... read more

Hawaii is a part of the United States since 1959; making it the newest and the 50th state of the country. State of Hawaii consists of hundreds of volcanic islands spread over the area of 1500 miles. However, there are only eight main islands. Honolulu is the capital of the State of Hawaii, located on Oahu Island. We had considered visiting Oahu, Lanai, or Kauai islands. However, we finalized Oahu, as it had the combination of a city life and quiet secluded beaches. We had reserved our beach front room at Marriott’s Waikiki Beach Resort at the Waikiki Beach through Expedia. Air tickets with Hawaiian Air. We reached Honolulu Airport around 1 pm on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. We could feel Hawaii as soon as we got off the flight! It was so warm and cozy ... read more
