Volcano Trip
6,000 ft. above sea-level. Today was another beautiful day on the island of Hawaii. We had a late start around 9ish, we all gathered in the van to go to the Volcano National Park. We drove 6,000 ft up Mauna Loa with Lehua and Kaumakaiwa Kamara'ole. They talked to us about their culture and lifestyle. After we drove half way back down we stopped to make a lei made of ferns, as an offering for Pele, the Goddess of Fire. Then we drove to Kilauea Caldera Crater. Kaum sang a permission song to ask if we can be on the island. Then we threw the lei into the sulfer smelling crater. After we got permission to be on the island we drove to the steam vents. Steam vents are water in the ground that gets heated up by the lava and turns to steam. We drove to the Lava Tube and saw some cool Asians. We walked around the trail and asked an Asian to take a picture. Nia told him Arigato (thank you in Japanese), but he was from Utah. We walked to the Kazumura Lava Tube cave. Which was pretty intense, it was a lava cave that went into the ground. Lava caves

Nia, holding the lei we made for Pele. are formed when lava flows from the volcano and eventually makes a tunnel. We climbed the rocky wall which was pretty gnarly. The cave was about half a mile long, and it didn't have an exit. Later on we came back to the house, did homework, ate dinner and watched the beginning of Whale Rider. We got bored and went SHOPPING at the mall until it closed =). Finally we came back to the house and got ready for tomorrow's adventure.
