Hawaii May 6th thru May 10th I was in Hawaii, this was my third trip to Hawaii, but this time it was to take a NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies). I arrived in Honolulu at 10:00am on Thursday the 6th, I first went to my Hotel hoping I could get an early check in and freshen up from my long flight, but the room was not ready, so I went to where my NICET test would be, afterwards I went to Pearl Harbor and spent a couple of hours walking around and looking at all the monuments and maps, I was unable to make it to the USS Arizona monument as the tickets are free the start handing them out at 7:00am, by now it was around 3:00pm so I went back to ... read more

Once again your intrepid travelors ventured into paradise. Today, however, we took a step back in time, to the days when Hawaii, just a Territory, was a lazy island chain where the United States manned the outposts of freedom against Japanese aggression. Reach back into the mists of history and imagine Pearl Harbor, Battleship Row, the military raising the flag at 0800 hours sharp, bands playing the Star Spangled Banner, a Sunday morning dawning bright and clear - all is well. Then, suddenly, the sounds of alien aircraft overhead, bombs exploding on the pride of the Navy and machine gun fire breaking the morning silence. Ships explode, sailors man deck guns to shoot down planes displaying the Rising Sun or "meatball" symbol, men dying. Then a mighty explosion, fireball and billowing clouds of black smoke as ... read more

Today is our third day being docked in Honolulu. Yesterday morning, we disembarked the passengers from our first Hawaii cruise, then in the afternoon and evening our next group of passengers embarked the ship. Two days ago, when we first arrived in Honolulu, myself and a couple girls tried to go to Pearl Harbor to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. We arrived too late to get tour tickets that fit our plans for the rest of the day. I had to work all day yesterday. So today was our last chance to try to do the tour at Pearl Harbor. Tickets are free to go out onto the USS Arizona Memorial, but they are first come first served, no reservations. It fills up quickly! In order to get early tickets, to ensure we had time to ... read more

Ya reckon Vancouvers got a homeless issue? HA! Seattle laughs in your face. In comparison, Vancouver is a veritable Monaco. Seems like every second person has an angle for some sort of freebie. It's a downsided backdrop on what is otherwise a seemingly fantastic city, an enigma if ever there was one. A modern skyline is punctuated by Bohemian enclaves, bustling waterfront markets, groovy cafes and bars, and trendy shops, all with this infusion of down-and-outers loitering amidst. A wonderful day was spent delving into the bowels of Seattle but with one eye constantly on our valuables. Highlights? Well now you mention it: 1. The weather - it may have been patchy at best but we did manage to unfurl the sunnies, if only for a few minutes. In a city that "boasts" 300 days of ... read more

My dad just recently decided he wasn't to happy living in Los Angeles and figured the best thing to do would be to pick up and re-locate to the one place he loved most - Hawaii. I have to say there's really only one reaction to that kind of news, "YEESSSSS!!!!" So there he went and then there we came. We were originally supposed to go back to England to visit the fam for the triplets' birthdays, but flights to England got so expensive again I thought I'd just check to see what it cost to fly to Hawaii. Thanks to my forever cheapest flight site Expedia, I found two round-trip tickets to Oahu for $233 each....uh, booked! After months of work work work and no play, Hawaii was the place we needed. Everyone refers to ... read more

The weather here has been awesome.....it's been sunny every day, unlike in the states, where it's cold and rainy. Love it here!!!! We drove up to the clubhouse at Hawaii Loa Ridge and captured the scenic beauty of the island. When you look at Diamond Head from the Waikiki area, you get a much different perspective than what is in these photos. Yes, there really is a crater at the top. We then went to lunch at Koko Marina. Our friends have a house in the marina, so instead of driving and having to find parking at this time of year, we simply took the boat across to the restaurant. We ate among the ducks, who where scavenging for additional scrap. The cat belongs to our friends. It's not just an ordinary cat -- it's a ... read more

We thought that we’d try to walk from Palolo Valley to the Koolau Range, which is probably a five hour hike, especially since we're no longer spring chickens. We thought nothing of a five hour hike -- we walk that in the Bay Area all the time. When we approached the entry down to the river, however, we questioned whether we were at the right place. We then asked ourselves whether we were doing the right thing. The entry was dark, with trees and brush shading the path. It was also narrow and steep, with a rope lining the path to prevent the hikers from slipping too far down the muddy path. From the start, we knew that we underestimated the terrain. After we got down to the river, there was no path to speak of. ... read more

During the holidays, we like to spend time with family and friends here on the island. Every Sunday before New Year’s, we pound mochi with mom’s friends of 20+ years. It’s been a tradition from the ‘80s and sadly, it was announced that this would be our last year. The second generation is getting up in age and it’s now difficult for them to carry on this tradition. Pounding 100 pounds of mochi takes strength and endurance, even though there is a grinder that turns the steamed mochi rice into a rough, pasty consistency. We have a family tradition of eating mochi on New Year’s Day, and we generally decorate the house with a set of two stacked mochi and a tangerine for good luck. We found that the hand-made mochi is so much better than ... read more

Who would have thought that the airport would be crowded on Christmas Day? Everyone should already be with their families, opening gifts and planning the meal for the evening. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. We were surprised at the lines at the airport, especially if you were checking bags through the economy check-in line at United. Once we cleared through security, the crowds seemed to follow us. The seats in the waiting areas were full and there were passengers lying along the railings. Whereas we thought the plane would be half-full, the airlines had overbooked the flight. The flight attendants they were scouring the plane in search of all of the empty seats. After all said and done, they were able to accommodate only one passenger off their waitlist. With that, we were off to the ... read more
