Posted by: Onaxthiel: Gatorgatorgator... I'm taking a day off/giving Obfuscator a day off from typing today, as I felt like writing again. It must be something like three weeks since the last time I wrote. Anyhow, we started our morning in Laura Walker state park, right outside the Okefenokee swamp. This region of the country is foggy virtually every morning, a fact I remember all too well from when I was stationed in Savannah and had algae growing on my car due to the constant morning mists. Being beside a swamp did nothing to help alleviate the grey. Our plan for the day was to head into a park we had heard about in the area that ran boat tours and supposedly had very good facilities. I think I wasn't really prepared for how well laid ... read more

Obfuscator writes: It was a good day to wake up in St. Augustine. The weather was clear and sunny, and with temperatures that must have been high 70's. Right near the ocean like St. Augustine is, it was beautiful and mild. We wanted to see as much as we could of the town before leaving in the evening, so we got underway fairly quickly, and drove to the historic downtown area, where we found a metered parking spot. Of course, we weren't keen on feeding a meter, but you don't have much choice in St. Augustine. Finding a free parking spot is quite challenging. The first place we stopped was a visitor's center and museum. I think, but am not sure, that it may have been an old government building. At any rate, the focus of ... read more

Posted by Onaxthiel: It's been a while since I last posted, and I needed a break after the last two days of driving. Since we found out about the chance to see a shuttle launch, we decided that driving across half the south would be a good idea. It is kind of a twenty first century march to the sea, but with much less killing and a bit less burning. Particularly since the south east of the US is in a sever drought right now and the state parks think that one spark from a camp fire will cause their entire state to explode like a car load of villainous mooks in a Hollywood action flick. There really isn't a good reason to disallow burning at Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. They disallow burning ... read more

I am really looking to cover a lot of ground in taking you back to Florence and Sorrento with my study abroad group, but I realized that it could work well that way. For one, I met two different Italian guys that were named Guiseppe, one in Florence, and one on our last night in Sorrento. But each place had special little niches where I could go sit and work on my scrapbook journal, or where I could just sit and gaze out into space, relishing the fact (again) that I was in Italy. To stay in Sorrento and take little trips out to Pompeii and Capri was an added bonus, but as one group member asked me (and a male friend on the trip, coincidentally enough) if I would like to go back to Sorrento ... read more

Decided there was just about enough to keep me occupied in Savannah for 2 full days, so made my stop here for 3 nights. Had a much less eventful bus journey into toen today, one that took about half an hour less than yesterday. My first port of call was one of Savannah's many historic houses, Davenport House, built in around 1815, but renovated around 35 years ago. Being non peake season for tourists, I had my own personal tour guide who showed me round the house, and gave an insight into the way of life in that era. Following this tour, I stopped for some lunch at a bakery recommended by the Lonely Planet, which turned out to be great apart from the vast amount of olives in the food. Then I wandered over to ... read more

is how John Cusack describes Savannah in 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'. Having never seen Gone With the Wind, nor taken Mescaline, I can't verify this statement. But I can confirm that Savannah is a pretty town, a colonial relic spared by the Union troops in the Civil War at a time when they were burning every city they took. My journey here was fine, apart from my panic attack when I thought I saw my hotel a good 45 minutes before we got to the city. False alarm luckily. I'm still 15 minutes from the historic downtown region, but I'm also staying in a gorgeous hotel suite, nearly as big as my flat. Today I got the bus into town which was a mission in itself, after my bus driver first stopped ... read more

... read more

Posted By: Onaxthiel: And now, a day to cover three states. Leaving Raleigh from A's place was easy enough, being a Sunday morning on highways. We made one more stop off at E's place in Fayetteville to see if he wanted to go shooting, but he had a sizable hangover and wasn't up for loud banging sounds. After a brief stop, we moved on to the long, indirect route down towards Dahlonega, Georgia. There really isn't much to tell about the drive to the mountains. I got pulled over and ticketed by a Georgia State Trooper. I was smiling and polite the entire time, since I was in a pretty good mood up until the light appeared in the rear view, and still got ticketed. Next time I will have to try belligerence. The next day ... read more

... read more
