Finally getting around to starting this trip blog!....We actually began this trip at the Great Smoky Mtns, then headed west to Arizona, where we spent 3 nights at the Grand Canyon south rim which we hadn’t been to. You could hike around the rim trail and get away from the crowds. The highlight for us was hiking down a trail into the canyon to an area called Cedar Ridge. It was about a 1200 ft. descent and the views were spectacular! Today is May 16, 2007, we’ve been at Zion National Park in SW Utah for the last 4 nights. We love it here. We have a great campsite in the park right on the river. They have electric hook ups which is rare for a national park. We were able to hike up the ... read more

**FYI, LeAnne wrote the blog, & Natalie commentaried the pics... Hey EVERYONE! Yep, it's us again hollerin' from good ol' Eureka, California. A lot has happened since the last blog....let's see, that was 2 days ago. Well we will begin in Bend, Oregon. Natalie and I had spent a good two days there checking out the parks and visiting with Marja, my guiding buddy from Alaska. Our scheduled departure date would be that Saturday afternoon, an hour before my other buddy Julie would arrive in Bend. It just seemed right to stick around a little longer to visit with her too, so we decided to stay another night. I'm glad we did. The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up on journals and taking advantage of the free wi-fi at the local bakery. Along ... read more

May 16, 2007 Wednesday It has been 4 years since my last trip with a “group”. Well, that year was really with family…… but having grown used to “twosomes” as Emy and I turned out to be in the past years, this trip held so many promises. Plus, having included so many reunions with dear friends on this trip provided so much excitement. In a way, it’s a reunion trip with Boy and Evelyn too, with whom I traveled (with my then young nieces) back in 1994. That was a month-long trip and young that we were then, we had all the patience in the world then as we laughed off all unexpected twists in our travel plan. I am personally curious how the last 23 years have tested, or honed, our tempers for adventures such ... read more

Having come traveling to see new cultures and other parts of the world I was convinced I wouldn't like LA, where we had a quick 3 day stop before flying into Central America and Mexico however a few days later and I really was sad to leave, I had a really good time and enjoyed the atmosphere which was much more relaxed and not a pretentious as I assumed Hollywood would be. Saying that we did stick to the tourist areas rather than to dodgy parts of LA so my view of the city is slightly skewed. After touching down late afternoon we found our hostel on Melrose to be in a really interesting part of the city walking distance from most major attractions and also found due to the exchange rate we could eat ... read more

So I finally got around to emailing Ben Redhead (I just have to find out if he actually has red hair one of these days), who's in charge of placements in Taiwan. Basically, the way the whole thing works is that you get hired by Hess via email and telephone interview. You then start working on getting all of your paperwork together for your work visa, and you send out your request for contracts and placment. I requested Taichung, Contract B. The contracts are very important. Contract A 20 hours of guaranteed work per week NT$560 per hour You work only at a Hess Language School, which is a cram school for school aged children (ages 7-15) Contract B 30.5 hours guaranteed work per week NT$560 per hour Work 20+ hours per week at a Hess ... read more

After a year of bureaucracy, the visa was approved, thus launching us toward our new lives. The plan is to start traveling in about two months, with much to do in the interim...jobs to quit, junk to sell, habits to break, much to leave behind. Moving sucks; moving internationally sucks on a whole new scale. The plan: Now: Packing July: Central America October: Start life in New Zealand ... read more

Who said the United States had tightened up their security. They let us in!!!! After a fairly good flight, we cruised through immigration and we were on our way to Ocean Beach. We stayed at Ocean Beach Backpackers for 2 weeks. Most of the crew were quite a bit younger and partied quite a bit so we only felt it was our duty to join in and show them how it is done!! It didn't take long for us to find out that the pub down the road had beers starting at $1.00 from 10am in the morning, and then went up 25 cents every hour after that. They also had the best fish tacos ever!!!! The weather wasn't so good. It was May Grey. The surf was very average and the water so cold, ... read more
