After all my plans to travel in the deep, dark, depths of Mexico, I know find myself relaxing in sunny San Diego at Pacific Beach. I spent two nights in an average Hostel and moved to the Banana Bungalow this morning. It has a sweet location right on the beach and Keg Parties every night. It was sad to say goodbye to my two new friends, Ali and Robie, but I know that adventure lies ahead for all of us! I am sure we will meet up soon. I had grown a little weary of life on the road and the sweltering Mexican heat. Whilst, my reasons for travelling are to see the world, I also want to get stuck into some more active pursuits. I will now stay put in San Diego for a while. ... read more

In the summer of 2002, I spent 2 months in California. As part of my degree in Britain I decided I wanted to write a dissertation on Mexican farmworkers in California, focussing in particular on the formation of Hometown Associations (where Mexicans from particular towns in Mexico would group their money together to pay for particular projects in those towns, such as rebuilding schools, churches, or laying new sewerage systems). I was lucky enough to get some funding from my University and so at the end of June I set off on a flight to San Francisco. After an uneventful flight I went by bus to the lovely town of Napa, about an hour north of San Fran. There I was met by Hugh and Aletha, 2 of the nicest people in the world! They knew ... read more

I had the opportunity to see San Francisco when Keith (Dennis’ nephew) and his girlfriend Jan, picked me up from Tita Sibi’s house. Stayed with Keith and Jan in their cool condo which was just beside the Candlestick Park. Went around San Francisco - of course you won’t miss the Golden Gate Bridge (wondering why it’s described as Golden when the Bridge is not Gold ha..ha..ha..), Crookedest Street and Pier 39. Oh, I saw Alcatraz from afar. While in the city, I was able to visit my cousin Grace who just had another baby girl. ... read more

I touched down in San Francisco on June 20th 2002 after an 11 hour flight from London. Feeling tired and weary I did what any savvy budget traveller would do and hailed down a cab to take me to my Hostel. It took me a little while to settle into life in the Hostel. What no room service? The Pacific Tradewinds Hostel was a small and welcoming joint and I quickly made friends with some varied and interesting characters. I quickly developed a rapport with Robie from Canada, based mainly on a mutual apprecation of drinking and womanizing. I spent a few days doing the tourist thing e.g. walking around the city, alcatraz, cable car rides etc. The best thing I did was hiring a mountain bike and cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, I also ... read more

Our next visit was Windsor. We rode the Greyhound bus from Los Angeles to Santa Rosa - an 8 hour ride. I won’t forget this experience, really. The bus route, which I never expected was different. I was expecting that we would use mostly the freeway but instead it went through some towns and cities. I saw the large vineyards and farms in Napa Valley. It was a delight to see my two aunts there, Tita Moni and Tita Sibi. We stayed at Tita Sibi’s house. She and Tito Romy were the ones left in their big house. It’s cooler there in Santa Rosa compared to Los Angeles. ... read more

After the road trip across from Utah I needed to rest a little. The USA Hostel, down town San Deigo had large airy rooms, friendly staff and free waffles for breakfast - all for $19 per night. I've been told that Oz is way cheaper - but that is the cheapest hostel so far - I booked up three nights. The hostel was located in the Gas Lamp Quarter, real scenic, lots of bars. America does actually have some nice beer. Samual Adams - real beer - like the english stuff - hops and malt and flavor. At $5 a pint it bloody well should be nice - had one pint and went to Ralphs supermarket - picked up 12 Corona for $9 and went back to the hostel - getting in training for Mexico. So ... read more

My first travel to the US was when I accompanied my mother who was a first time immigrant. My Mama was petitioned by my brother who have been in the US for 13 years. We are still looking where she can stay and our first stop was Los Angeles. Aaah.. Los Angeles. We got the non-stop flight to Los Angeles from Manila and arrived in early evening and saw that the sun was still up???..weird..for a Filipino..ha..ha..it was my first time to visit, remember. I have a friend who lives in Los Angeles with her family (Derick and Ivy Equiza). I requested Derick to pick us up from the airport and it was already 8pm when Mama was finished in the immigration. I was so excited to see them since it been years since we saw ... read more

3 hrs drive saw us to San Diego - its really relaxed, lots of surf dudes and beach bunnies. We checked in to the Ocean Beach Hostel - spent the afternoon on the beach sleeping. Woke for the free BBQ at the hostel at six. Chatted to loads of people and made our way to a bar. Steve is twenty one in September - unfortunately that isn't good enough for state law and so we looked to see what else we could do. The hostel has received so many complaints that they don't allow drinking anywhere after nine. The bars are all ID crazy - one of the girls at the hostel said that down on the beach there are often fires which people gather around and party - so we went down to look for ... read more

I drove the PT Cruiser into Los Angeles - along some of the maddest roads I have ever been on. The highways stretch out over 6 lanes each side, people overtake on all sides and the signs are crap, one thing the UK does a lot better than the US is road signs. In the US signs just indicate the very next exit with maybe 1/2 a mile notice. Matt managed to revert to UK driving - on the left - at a truck stop - which could have been very nasty, and I nearly side swiped a cop car on a weird intersection - we got away with both, we are very lucky guys. We dropped the bike off and checked into a USA International hostel - very nice facilities, ensuite dorms - only 4 ... read more
