The Rock in the Bay. The one Clint Eastwood escaped from and the one Ed Harris/Nicolas Cage/Sean Connery fought over. Once the home of Al Capone. It is beautifully located in the San Francisco Bay. Much has been left untouched since this high-security facility was closed down in the 1960’s or so. Comfort and pleasure aren’t the first things that comes to mind here. Not exactly Hotel California. You couldn’t check out any time you like…... read more

A day-trip to San Francisco from Los Angeles is not to recommend. It's a 6 hr drive on the interstate, one way. Sort of a hit-n-run experience. You step on it to make the most out of your day in SF, but still the time just isn't enough. Our Ford Mercury is big and comfortable, more than enough for the three of us. The coastal highway would have been much more scenic, but we just don't have the time, so I-5 it is. It's really not too bad. The valleys leading out to the inland of California are nice. Dry, not very colorful, but very different from the terrain in our homeland. Then all of a sudden the topography changes. Like the flick of a switch the landscape switches to completely flat, plain land. Like a ... read more

It's early, as I bicycle away from Orr Hot Springs. It's also cold. Arriving into the valleys that contain ancient redwoods the frosty air that is 20 degrees below that 10 miles east of here is notable; especially when riding. I have the entirity of Montgomery Woods State Park to myself even though it is the weekend, and I make a pleasant morning of it. I climb the first steep hill, leaving my bicycle behind, and after a short walk I reach the grove, a thin expanse marking one of the last virgin redwood forests in the region. Trees dwarfing me, making me feel lonely yet simaltaneously whole. Nature abounds. I take a hike later on above the grove to find a fence and a sign clearly stating, "No Trespassing", followed by a more vulgarly worded ... read more

DAY 4 - MONDAY 23 AUGUST No it's not a typo - it was Monday again thanks to jet lag's best friend, the International Date Line. It was a long, long flight. Chose chicken for dinner, not the spinach, in case you wanted to know. I sat right at the arse end of the plane, a sort of business class gone backwards. Tried to get some sleep but couldn't. The plane landed at LAX (LA airport) at 10.20am. I was met by Dean Thomas, a kiwi now living and working in the US. Dean has been in the US since 1990 and is a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy Sea Cadet Corps. Prior to his arrival, Dean was a field umpire in the Auckland Australian Football League from 1988-1990. He was also a boundary umpire ... read more
