As of mid-May, we were still flip-flopping ideas about where to go during the Memorial Day (May-end) long weekend for our first adventure of 2007. I had been leaning towards Yosemite all along and the news of the opening of both the Tioga Road and the Glacier Point Road around May 11th kinda cemented our choice. These roads have never opened this early in the year for quite a few years now. Lower snowfall this year must have done the trick - blame global warming! The Drive - May 24/25, 2007 Of course, we were not going to get any campgrounds this late in the game, so we decided to beat the crowd and try to reach the valley early on Friday morning itself (a working day). That would give us atleast a chance in ... read more

Saturday, 3rd June 2007 - Yosemite National Park. Today was another long day of driving, although this time with quite a few stops along the way, as we spent the majority of the day driving through Yosemite National Park, so we were making lots of sightseeing stops. I did the driving today, which while tiring, was good. Yosemite is a gorgeous park and made me desperate to explore further the national parks of the US and specifically Canada, which I'll try to do on one of my next trips! There were some pretty amazing roads to drive, as we pretty much drove up to the top of the valley, then down into it and out again. Good thing I'm not afraid of heights..... Its full of pine trees and as its only just the end ... read more

Rachel and I spent the last three weeks in Yosemite Valley after a great Southern Utah tour through Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Zion Natl. Parks. Presently we are in the luxury Ahwanee Hotel poaching as much electricity as we can to recharge cameras, phones, and the confuser. The weather here has been absolutely splitter with bluebird skies and nary a drop of rain. We have been ticking many Yosemite classics averaging 8-10 pitches a day, five days a week. Climbs include Serenity/Sons of Yesterday, East Buttress of Middle Cathedral, E. Butt of El Cap, cragging at the Cookie and Pat & Jacks, the Nutcracker, a day at Glacier Point, Astrobaby (the first three pitches of Astroman) and most recently a one day ascent of Half Dome via the Regular Route. This was a stellar route ... read more

Yosemite National Park; the Heart of the Sierra Nevada. Everyone I had spoken to had said that it was the most beautiful place in the world so I was pretty excited to be spending some time there on a 2-night, 3-day camping trip. We were scheduled to leave at the ungodly hour of 6.45am so I duly borrowed someone's phone from the hostel to wake me up, it didn't work. Luckily I woke up at about 6.30 stared stupidly at the time, swore, jumped out of bed, panicked, swore some more, brushed my teeth, panicked, threw on some clothes and barrelled down the road to the pick up point where the bus was late! The group that I was going with was great, we all got on really well and it wasn't long before we were ... read more

We’ve spent the last week or so between Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks and Yosemite NP in the high Sierra in California. Today is May 23rd , this is our 4th day at Yosemite. The weather has been perfect…sunny blue skies, 70’s during the day and 40’s at night. Well it did get to 34 last at night at our campsite but it’s right by the river and a little cooler…. by 9 am it was already up to 64 degrees! We really liked Kings Canyon… we practically had it to ourselves and probably our favorite campsite so far. Yosemite is much more crowded….we’re talking busloads of Japanese and French tourists…they seem to love it out west but you can still find solitude and get away from the crowds. And Yosemite has THE VALLEY…it’s indescribable! The ... read more

Now, for those of you that don't know.......and I didn't......Yosemite is a national park, based around an impressive glacial valley, and home to the world's 5th largest waterfall. The bus ride was relatively uneventful....ooohh except for some WEIRD coincidences. There were 4 of us on the trip and the 2 strangers were british guys. I got chatting to them and quickly discovered that they were from near Bristol (something Jen often said) Living in Wotton Under Edge Bristol is the safest bet for people actually recognising it! Further chat revealed that they too were from Wotton, and even more scarily from Charfield (Jen's little village!) And that they knew of her! That exclaimed over, chat continued.....only to discover there was more spookiness at work! One of the guys was just chatting generally and dropped in ... read more

The forests were beautiful, the trees huge, the trails awesome, and the riverfront camping peaceful. We ran out of things to do, or we just decided to be american and move on quickly in search of slightly warmer southern climates, and took off after 2 nights. We kamakaziied our way toward Yosemite, stopping in "Australia" to pick up some Aussie hats (which, awkwardly, only make us look like we really are from Texas. picture coming soon, i'm sure. Yeehaw). We slept at a Walmart (no laughing...free overnight parking lots are not to be overlooked...especially when you can wake up, walk inside, and come back out with those little powdered sugar donuts). We made it into Yosemite, got a campsite for 3 nights, (with no hookups...there's no electricity for campers in the whole park), and settled ... read more
