Here it is, after midnight, while the rest of the world slumbers (at least around me) I sit up, busy parking memories. Circa, mid fifties. The Buick was the classic black and white. We'd load it to the hilt, and off we'd go for our annual camping trip. Trust me. I knew where the middle of the seat was. Because if my sister's elbow or knee or God forbid her foot crossed that line, there's be a cat fight in the back seat. To a skinny nose picking toe headed kid, we were headed to the North Pole Mountains. I didn't have a clue. And yes, I asked umpteen times, 'are we there yet?' But the truth was, our destination was either Kings Canyon or Yosemite. Some times we'd head up Hwy 99 to Kings ... read more

October 24, 2006, Tuesday. Our first full day at Yosemite, began at the Visitor’s Center, where we got info on hikes, tours, and saw a neat video---The Spirit of Yosemite. The famous naturalist, John Muir, was instrumental in getting Abe Lincoln to preserve some of this scenic wilderness and keep it for all people to see and enjoy. Later, he will convenience Franklin that more area is needed to preserve the ecosystem, and it becomes a National Park. Back on our bikes, we stopped at the trail to the lower Yosemite Falls, quite dry at this time of year, but a pleasant walk among the Ponderosa Pines. The time to see rushing water is spring. After lunch at the Yosemite Lodge, we left on a tram-ride through Yosemite, narrated by a Ranger; neat way to get ... read more

So we stopped off at Sacramento, state capital but didnt see The Gubernator on his way into the Capitol. It has this old bit where the gunslinging atmosphere is still preserved. We called into the tourist information, and when one of the two assistents finally turned around, he said "no, no hostels here" and suggested the Holiday Inn. Sitting on the step outside, admiring an old wagon and horses, this old local chap came over and within seconds was asking us whether we had already got a room at "the best hostel in north america" The YHA at Sacramento is amazing. Like Calistoga´s Inn, it is straight out of a Mark Twain yarn and full of charm, set back as it is from a busy main road. The downstairs parlour - no other word for it ... read more

Well, what can I say, it's Yosemite. I don't know if I could praise Yosemite any greater than what has already been said by thousands before me. And, I'm not sure any one thing about it that is so extraordinary to deserve such praise, but with everything it has combined, it is special and I think worthy of the praise. Like many of my recent adventures (due to weekend excursion limits because of this silly thing called work... I guess I'm a bandwagon type of guy... you know, everyone seems to be doing it :) this was a day trip. Anyway, this trip really began on Saturday when I took off on the 3.5 hour trip from San Francisco to the Yosemite Bug (http://www.yosemitebug.com/). Earlier in the day, I had called and reserved a bed in ... read more

The drive to Yosemite was spectacular- wrapping through the mountain, slowly turning uphill to open unique landscapes and views. I was behind the wheel - T stayed back. Marissa, Hope and I arrived around Yosemite National Park Sunday evening. The three plus hour drive left us burning daylight, which is critical when you’re trying to set up camp, especially when it’s raining. The rain started to pick up about an hour before we parked to set up our tent and eat dinner. (Note to reader, rain makes camping significantly less enjoyable, not the best way to kick off our vacation. But of course we made due.) Having two seasoned campers like Marissa and Hope helped quite a bit. Those ladies know all the tricks. That night we just pulled off the highway, drove up a dirt ... read more

After 2 weeks of our senses being bombarded in the way only city life can, we were both looking forward to getting into the country to enjoy some WOW time. Even though cities are fun, you just don't get the wows!! And we knew that Yosemite was well known for delivering wow after wow..... Our base for the next 3 days would be about 40 miles southwest of the park in Mariposa (The last remaining Gold Rush Town and full of real cowboys - cool, although Brokeback Mountain has sort of tainted the romantic idea of it all for me). A log cabin nestled on the edge of a forest right next to a lake, catch and release fishing available. Very nice, accept the Lake was being drained when we got there, so no fishing. Still ... read more

After a overnight stop in the middle of the Nevada desert we reached Yosemite National Park. This is somewhere I'd always wanted to go as I have seen so many beautiful pictures of it. We were staying in a hostel about 35 miles from Yosemite Valley. The nearest town to it was 7 miles away. We arrived on a Saturday night and the cafe there had a band on in the evening. They served really good food too at reasonable prices, something we haven't had too often in Amercia. We ended up playing Scattergories (a board game) with some Irish guys and American girls before standing around the open fire pit before bed. We drove into Yosemite the next day, the previous day we had driven through the park's high ground, but today we were going ... read more

Mon 9/4 - Fri 9/8: Yosemite When I drove into Yosemite, I was awestruck. I was now on the floor of the canyon I had read so much about. My jaw hit the floor when I came around the bend to see El Capitan, the world’s largest exposed chunk of granite. I learned later that rock climbers usually take 3 to 4 days to climb this thing, though lately there is a speed climbing movement where climbers have ascended in just hours. I knew there were climbers up there, but I couldn’t see them without binoculars. I took a few pictures of El Cap, failing to capture its grandeur. I looked at the rock, imagining what lines I would take if I were climbing it, and what it would be like to sleep up there, tied ... read more
