Day1: To Paso Robles We’re still keeping things local as our toddler is yet to be vaccinated. This is helping me find gems in driving distance. This holiday season, we’re headed to San Luis Obispo area for some animal fun! We stopped by Casa de Fruta to chop up the 3-hr drive. It is this farm-stand-turned-institution that has Casa de everything from hotel to gas station. We’ve passed by it gazillion times but never occurred to us to even give it a try…until a vehicle-loving tot joined us. This is the second time for us and it turned out to be an amazing place; amazing for the 2-yr-old and not too painful for us. First of all, there are peacocks, ducks, and roosters roaming around. We didn’t see them this time but there were tons of ... read more

We decided to leave San Francisco at 6:30am this morning to avoid rush hour. If this was NOT rush hour, I would HATE to drive in the real thing! We took the Richmond bridge towards Oakland from Corte Madera to avoid driving directly through San Francisco but the 5 or 6 lanes of traffic grew increasingly packed with vehicles for two hours varying from 80 or 90 miles per hour down to sudden full stops until we were past San Jose. It was crazy with cars flying back and forth across all 6 lanes of traffic trying to find the fastest lane or to get into position for their exit. I cut off one car who swerved to narrowly avoid me hitting him when I had to switch lanes suddenly to avoid exiting too early. Luckily ... read more

There's been a few destinations along the way, but here is a documentation of my walk to San Francisco from San Luis Obispo. Truth be told, I didn't walk the ENTIRE way because it turns out that over 250 miles is actually quite difficult. Before heading out, I sent home a good deal of my belongings. I kept a sleeping bag, my mandolin, clothes and toiletries. After one day, I made it to Morro Bay. I found a patch of land under a tree and slept there for the night. A few other wandering souls joined the vicinity at some point as well. Thing was, my boots were too big and left me with some big nasty blisters that were gross to look at. I started stuffing random findings like a sock and a glove into ... read more

Today started out like the other days, an early work out, beautiful sunrise, breakfast. Did you enjoy the panoramic picture I sent separately from my Samsung Galaxy SIII. And to be able to stretch it out on a touchable screen is really great. But then, we finally got motivated to plan our remaining 2013 time share adventures. We decided we wanted to go back to Hawaii, and after researching availability in Kauai and Maui, and then checking airline schedule availability both on-line and on the phone for seemingly hours, we had a plan It took all Tuesday morning, and part of Monday night to all Tuesday morning to research information, but as of Tuesday night we had flight reservations on hold to round trip Kauai the first two weeks of November. Still needed to confirm time ... read more

I got up at 8am and phoned up Enterprise Rent-A-Car to get them to pick me up so I could collect my car. However they took 40 min and when I arrived I had to wait a futher 20 min before i could get my car. Then when I finally had the car, a nice Toyota Yaris, I had to work out how to drive an automatic and how to drive on the right hand side of the road!! I mananged to get back to the house, following the rules of the road and stopping at every bloody stop sign, and packed up my gear. I however realised that I had left my hat in Jan's car so would have to go via Viewpoint on my way out of LA! I grabbed a Starbucks and planned ... read more

we're home . . . safe and happy, no injuries or sickness. we arrived in SLO last night at 11:45pm via United Express which means we made it home in one day! the house and the addition looks great, not too many phone messages and right to bed...I woke up at 8am and Toni at 10am and we both feel that maybe we are on west coast time but more on that this afternoon. yes, it was a grueling day of travel, the kind when you're experiencing it a little voice in your head says "never again" but we both know that it's what happens when you travel long distances, sooner or later the s$^t hits the fan and something goes wrong with a connection and you have to deal with it. we're already thinking about ... read more

Bin bald aufgstandn, hab mit Tobi telefoniert, Pancakes gefruehstueckt und darauf gewartet, dass Hanna vorbeikommt, weil sie gesagt hat, sie holt mi ab. Hanna is die netteste Rasta-Lady, die i jemals getroffen hab. Unglaublich. Und der Blumengarten is noch viel schoener!!! Santa Barbara is selbst a eine wundervolle Stadt.

Aba als i ihn gesehen hab, ... read more

Spent yesterday wandering the streets of Solvang having a wonderful time. It felt like being in a fairy tale. In fact we must read all the Hans Christian Anderson Tales again so we can tell our Penny the traditional tales we grew up with. We pulled over into a gateway to check something to find we were visiting the famous horse whisperer's house, Monty Roberts. The scenery was amazing. When we arrived at San Luis Obisto we were even more entranced. We could live here. It feels like a warm Dunedin with students everywhere and a small town feel. We walked down to the centre of town and tried on novalty hats and stood in awe of the range of craft materials on sale. Finally we stopped into the Creeky Tiki for dinner. They had no ... read more
