Day 14 arrived with a forecast for rain, but at dawn it was mixed clouds and sunshine. Horray, however as the day drew on, rain as forecast did appear! Boo! On our agenda for the Bernardo Winery farmer's market, collecting Susan's musical gear from Bertrand's Music and a movie. First the farmer's market. We go there for the last 1/2 hour, it was raining and booths were breaking down but we still were able to buy some delicious strawberries. The Bernardo Winery is set up as small vilage with a very interesting wine tasting concept. There were clothing, sweet shop, handbag store, jewelry store and of course the tasting room Now here's the interesting concept. The Sweet Shop and Winery have joined together so as you get each wine taste, you walk over to the sweet ... read more

Well, today Tuesday was the worst day weather wise on our trip. (Picture) Cold and foggy all day. Guess what, we didn't even go out. We played hand and foot and just chilled out all day. Unfortunately this was Fara's last full day and we didn't get to the ocean as she had hoped but it was a restful day. Wednesday opened up with a bright and sunny day. We enjoyed feeding the ducks bread, that brought most of the flock to our patio. Fara took off for her trip back to Phoenix and we prepared to meet friends Vicki and Larry for the days of our journey. We had lunch at the Thornton Winery, a beautiful place (picture of Susan), did a wine tasting before heading over to meet Vicki and Larry to begin our ... read more

Another beautiful morning in Escondido. Overcast initially turns into bright sunshine. Ducks are floating in the pond and waiting for handouts! Bob attended the allegedly hilariously funny resort preview this morning. The only thing hilarious about it was how bad the event itself was. Coffee and pastries (of course early birds got there early and gobbled them up--seriously folks, they weren't even that good! Oh well, I left early and grabbed the refills that were intended for after the event. After 40", I had enough! We ventured into San Diego for a GREAT MACY'S HOME FURNITURE STORE, with a great great selection and have narrowed down a couple possibilities. It's nice to sit on furniture before order, don't you think? Macy's will let you order, ship and setup and let you sit in it, and then if ... read more

The big day has arrived! Susan's birthday. It was a beautiful sunny day and warm, high of 73, almost felt like a heat wave had arrived! This morning the ducks came up to the patio from the pond (looking for food and the folks above us obliged with bread).Picture. A special thank you to all family and friends who Skyped, email, texted and sent eCards with warm birthday greetings. That was special for Susan. Fara made breakfast which was delicious. Then off to wine country we went. Our first stop was at Keyways Vineard winery. A beautiful setting and being Superbowl Sunday, delightfully uncrowded. This has a beautiful fireplace and seating area and is a favorite. Fara had a 2 for 1 so we sampled a variety of reds and whites before deciding to move on ... read more

Good Bye Avila Beach, Hello Escondido, Today, we left Avila Beach for our 6 hour drive to Escondido, location of the Lawrence Welk Resort. We really enjoyed out time in the Central California Coast area. The proximity of Morro Bay, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Pismo Beach make this a nice location for access to culture and wine country. We highly recommend this area as a destination. What can I say, driving through any part of LA, even on a Saturday, is anything but plesaureable. Heavy traffic with crazy motorcyclists weaving in and out is nuts. It's nice that Costco is well established as my usual gas stop is the Costco in Oxnard. Escondido also has a Costco as does Palm Desert. Gas is $3.759 at Costco. Trader Joe's are plentiful. We provisioned up at ... read more

Well, today is day 8 and our last day in Avila Beach. Another morning of gorgeous and deep red and pastel sunrise. Up early this morning to enjoy the sunrise and workout before coffee and paper. Picture is of our resort. Our first stop was the Premium Outlet Mall in Pismo Beach. A relatively small mall with small selection. We have been spoiled with Anthem and the Outlets near Palm Springs, so no purchases. Lunch at Ventana Grill with broad vistas of the ocean. Excellent food. I had the pulled pork special and Susan the salmon sandwich. We did our final two wine tastings in Avila Beach bout not good enough to buy. Late afternoon at the Inn provided an owner's reception, rather lame with a bunch or the party of the opposite persuasion grossing about ... read more

North America January 31st 2013

As our first week on the road winds down, activities of daily living intercede, like laundry. So that's what we spent the morning doing, plus just resting. In fact, we both took naps before we left for the day at 3 pm. Today, our major goal was the San Luis Obispo Farmer's Market tonight so on the way we stopped at Kohls, the Tolosa Winery and then the market. Kohl's was much smaller than in Surprise so we are spoiled. The winery was beautiful with pleasant wine (Bob liked better than Susan) so no wine purchase today. The market was fun. We saw our favorite jazz band that we met last Sunday. Isn't the 12 year old playing the washboard cute. He so enjoys playing his washboard. Two guys on unicycles were an amazing act. Lots of ... read more

Day 6- Morro Bay Opps. Slept in this morning. Must have been that exhaustive planning and research on the time share yesterday. So we buckled down to finalize the time share business this morning. After what seemed like an hour hold for US Air, we confirmed that flight information that Susan thought Bob wrote down incorrectly (but he didn't), then on the phone with Diamond Resorts to finalize the time share availability. We got it done, celebration time. Two weeks in Kauai Nov. 1-15, 2013. After breakfast, we set off for Morro Bay. Morro Bay is on the coast North of San Luis Obispo. The water front has two distinctive features, a very large rock and a big power plant beside it! Both are landmarks of different typesl See picture. We hit some antique shops and ... read more

Today started out like the other days, an early work out, beautiful sunrise, breakfast. Did you enjoy the panoramic picture I sent separately from my Samsung Galaxy SIII. And to be able to stretch it out on a touchable screen is really great. But then, we finally got motivated to plan our remaining 2013 time share adventures. We decided we wanted to go back to Hawaii, and after researching availability in Kauai and Maui, and then checking airline schedule availability both on-line and on the phone for seemingly hours, we had a plan It took all Tuesday morning, and part of Monday night to all Tuesday morning to research information, but as of Tuesday night we had flight reservations on hold to round trip Kauai the first two weeks of November. Still needed to confirm time ... read more

This is the version I emailed this morning without pictures (1/28) Day 3-Avila Beach and Pismo Beach It's Sunday morning, the sun is up and shining on gorgeous waves crashing into Avila Beach. Suffers are up earlier than us catching the waves. (see picture from our porch window). Today is a promising day weather wise and after a casual breakfast and planning our day, we headed out to experience our first full non-travel weekend day. We stayed relatively local today with a drive down Shell Beach road first to Pismo Beach where we attended a local Jazz and Blues jam session in their VFW. We saw it advertised with a coupon for free admission. It was great to see youngsters playing all kinds of instruments with old guys. The music was fun. We met the mother ... read more
