On this trip to San Francisco, I was on business. Yet I still made some time to go enjoy the sites. I spent some time riding around on the trolley cars. I also spent some time taking pictures of the lovely San Francisco Bridge. I definitely had to take a drive both ways on it before I left, just to say I had done so. I love the water, so I figured a cruise that included going to Alcatraz was just too good to pass up! This included a tour of San Francisco and of the great cell block at Alcatraz. I met some fun people on this tour and that is always something I enjoy. Everywhere I go, I get to meet great people! On my last trip to San Francisco, I stayed at the ... read more

Friday 11th We leave site nice and early and as we get out of the gate disaster strikes, the van dies on us. It just won't start ! I call the rental company who call a tow truck. Half an hour later it arrives and tows us the the garage up the road and departs. I ask the garage owner how long it will be to get it fixed and he says “ I'll look at it on Monday or Tuesday !!” I call the rental company who say that they'll get us towed to another garage and give us another van. Forty five mins later we're back on the road to SF where we're given a newer van. This one's painted in street art and looks great. By lunch time we're driving back over the ... read more

5th & 6thFebruary San Francisco Arrived San Francisco early morning, and passed under Golden Gate Bridge just after 5.15 am. Before disembarkation for our trips we had to pass through immigration (AGAIN). Our allotted time was 07.45 am. An hour and a half later we passed through the immigration channel. You can imagine the frustration in the queue which literally stretched the length of the ship at one stage. No one was leaving the ship until everyone had been seen!! And there’s always one (or in this case three) that held up proceedings!! This stop is also a changeover port and some 1400 passengers will disembark over the next two days. There will also be some changes in the crew including the captain. It will be interesting to see how the dynamics change with new passengers ... read more

The day started out just like any other day, but the special thing is that it's Fishermen's Wharf and Alcatraz day! We had a brief moment yesterday that lead us to believe Tom Tom may have expired which lead us to the Iphone maps. Fishermen's wharf is on Pier 33- that's what was entered for a desired location. As we happily chatter away and follow our directions, less and less cars are following and more and more trucks are barreling around us, we come to the end of the road? We are confused- it's a garbage dump- surely this is not what everyone is talking about? It was Pier 93 not 33 which apparently makes a big difference. THis is not for the tourist eyes to see. What a DUMP-literally! Side bar......Lombard and Bush (don't mind ... read more

Today Akela has a plan... we should discover San Francisco in all it’s beauty and the reality of life within by public transport and we set out early to catch the first tram of the day with a rover ticket which allowed us access to all the transport options. We bought our tickets and sat on the tram heading downtown for breakfast, it was misty and cold which is the norm early doors apparantly. The old tram is operated by cables and is iconic in any travel brochures for SF. It pulled its way up the steep hills and down the other side with the guy behind operating the huge brakes and telling Mike all about the engineering side. This was the first tram of the day and yet by the time we hit town trams coming ... read more

From San Francisco you can make an assortment of fascinating day trips to Bay area, vineyards of the region, you name it. Consult for instance Lonely Planet guides for succesful day trips. San Francisco itself offers visitors many opportunities to day trip on illegal substances. With these tips, you’ll do neither but get drunk and angry. Immediate regret guaranteed. Hello everyone, today's entry details our first day in San Francisco and the trip the Alcatraz Island. We rose early once again as we had been advised to book onto the first boat of the day at 8:45 so that the island wouldn't be too crowded whilst we were there. This was good advice as it did indeed become very crowded as we were leaving at 11. The boat trip out across the bay was great as it gave us a chance to look back at the city skyline although the weather here could rival England. It is much colder then we have experienced so far this holiday, struggling to reach above 20 degrees so those of us who had the foresight to pack a jumper have been fine whilst others have quickly bought one. When ... read more

This morning we caught the hop on and hop off bus to visit the main shopping area (around Union Square). We ate some breakfast in a cafe in the main square and then wandered around the shops - Nicky bought a nice bag from Bloomingdales. We returned to the pier area in the afternoon via the cable car in preparation for our trip to Alcatraz. The cable car journey was good fun as I was one of those standing on the carriage ledge and holding on as we made our way up and down the steep city streets. The trip to Alcatraz was interesting and was good to see the island and main prison block. As you can see from the photos, the sky was quite cloudy / foggy and so made the trip quite appropriate ... read more

... read more

Made it to San Francisco. I'm a bit jaded. 12 hour flight + 3 hours to get through customs + hay fever was not a good combo. From the airport, got a train into town (after we figures out how to get a ticket!! Haha an experience in itself). Train reminded me of the movie "ghost". Pretty cool. Then, all of a sudden a huge (tall) black man came barging into our carriage and starting shouting "hello ladies and gentleman, I am here to sell you a street magazine. I am a volunteer with the homeless and am just after some lunch money, have just been released from 20 years in jail..." At this point I was thinking, QUICK Blair give the man $1 for the frick'n paper! Haha, first American experience. Now have flu symptoms ... read more
