A somewhat relaxed departure from Pacific Grove - we couldn't just race away from Zeus - and we headed on past Santa Cruz.....with a brief stop at a couple of stores (partly so see if our UK Costco Card really would let us in over here - yes!) before winding our way up to the World Famous Mystery Spotfor an hour in the woods. Okay, I am sure it is all simple optical illusions, but the young lad entertaining us as our guide was amusing enough, and the pictures make for an odd experience....take Ellie's Matrix Impersonation, for example ! Next up was the chance to demonstrate everything Stephen had learned.....of the hidden menu for In'n'Out Burgers. Yes, a neopolitan shake, protein mustard style, 3x2 extra everythin... read more

Yippee - Shopping Day ! Off to spend Hubbies money, need some jeans, top and/or a jacket, as we are off to Alcatraz tonight & everyone says it is freezing going across the bay & walking around the island, so going prepared! Ok have now decided as much as I love Bloomingdales, Macys, Nordstroms & many, many other lovely shops I need to win the lottery if I can ever afford to buy anything in any of them :-( Did get some new Levi 'skinny' fit jeans, that I have to peel on & off, but are lovely and comfy, which at my age is very important! And a new wool jacket & a scarf, right ready for anything this strange San Francisco weather can throw at me; but before we go had to have a ... read more

Day 6 started with our trip to Alcatraz! We walked about 30-40 minutes from our hostel downtown to the pier where we had to catch our boat. They then took cheesy photos in front of a backdrop like they do when you first get onto a cruise ship, then we were off. As we left the pier, the view of the city behind us was awesome. When we arrived at Alcatraz Island, they herded us over to one area where they gave a brief introduction and then let us go off on our own. The welcome sign for the place also had painted "Welcome Indians" and what I learned that I hadn't known, was that Alcatraz became a squatting place for the Indian natives in the 60s as a protest to the land and rights that ... read more

Back in March, I learned that I needed to write a bucket list. "50 things that I wanted to do before I die", and one of them had to happen by March 17th. It was all part of an exercise for a class I was taking at my church titled, "Emerge: Claim Your Creativity" Reaching the given deadlne presented a challenge since most of my bucket list consisted of goals such as, "Go to Denmark" and/or "Go to France". I was pretty much just naming countries. How was I going to get to Europe and back by the 17th of March? So I put in a call for help to one of the teachers. She, herself, was going to "ride a mechanical bull", before the 17th, so that put it all in perspective. I realized I ... read more

After our doughnut breakfast, we got a cab to Pier 33, to pick up our tickets for the Alcatraz Tour. The tour cost $26 each and is sold out months in advance, so we had bought our tickets in Frbruary. We got the 10am ferry for the 15 minute ride across to Alcatraz Island. As you boad the ferry, staff take your photo in front of a fake Alcatraz backdrop and then charge you $15 for a 6x4' copy of it. The prison is quite imposing as you get up close. It was closed by Kennedy in the 1940's as it was badly damaged by the weather and was too expensive to repair and maintain. The $26 ticket price included an audio tour, which was brilliant. It included interviews with ex-prisoners and wardens and took you ... read more

So Emily arrived last night, everyone was ripping into me because I had no idea when she was getting here, nor her flight number or from where! So really was useless, her not me But hey she got here ok and introduced her to all my friends out here (6 of them) haha. But jet lag stop the night early and went to bed to make sure we were up for a brutal 10 am checkout, and a nice little trip to loris diner! So much food for breakfast so wonder the Americans are fat they have no concept for portion control! So afte that said goodbye to Sarah and dan till Vegas and all the others. Lionel ( a guy from chile who looks like messi) came with us to get a ride to muir ... read more

Saturday night in San Francisco soon rolled around & we had only a few days left before we had to set off for our California road trip. Our Ipad has been fantastic when scouting the best places to go, directions & highly rated accomodation. So with it on hand we booked up a beautiful restaurant for that evening which was right on the seafront & where we had been previously for 'happy hour' when I got a little too merry. I think the selling point was a chocolate mudslide cocktail the barman had made me a few nights previously and the seafood looked lovely. We couldn't go to San Francisco and not cycle the bridge or do Alactraz so we made it our mission to tick one off today, cycling the Golden Gate Bridge! Concious of ... read more

Okay so better late than never, right? We are home, well in the city we call home, calling on favors to be returned and currently sleeping on the floor at Erik's (brother's) home. Here is what happened after Turkey and up until this point.... First, I want to say a huge thank you to the lovely folks (Erika,David, Giulio) whom we met while traveling and were so kind to extend their above and beyond hospitality to our travel weary selves... you guys are amazing. After Turkey we flew to Athens. Athens was a little surprise, a little down and out these days, lots of graffiti and lots of folks on the streets, not the Athens I remember, but the gyro pita was still delicious and the historic sites still in tact. Upon arrival we ate some ... read more

Up early to visit Alcatraz, I love San Francisco it's such a lovely city! We catch the bus one block away and make our way to the ferry terminal, Steve did not have the correct money and the driver does not give change and before we know it, we've missed our stop. We have a bit of walk to the ferry, but it's an interesting walk through the city. We travel by ferry across the bay and arrive at Alcatraz, lots of walking to be done, it was well worth a look, although we were a little disappointed as a lot of the areas where blocked off so we were unable to see everything, after about 1 ½ we head back to the fairy and back to San Francisco, we walk again through the Marina and ... read more

Today we had booked our trip to the rock! We were up fairly early at around 8:30am, as we knew that we had to be down by Pier 33 (where the ferries to Alcatraz leave) by around 10:30am. We got ready and set out down to Market Street towards 7-Eleven, so that we could pick up a couple of croissants for breakfast. As it was a bit earlier today, luckily there were two left, so we snapped them up and ate them whilst waiting for the 'F' streetcar to take us down to the wharf. We were waiting for around 10 minutes or so before one arrived, and we squeezed on (it was fairly busy on there as there must not have been one for a while!) and then got off by Pier 33. We could ... read more
