Hi everyone - We had a wonderful 1st Friday art walk in Sedona with beautiful art work, wine and appetizers. Then to the Barking Frog for a prickly pear margarita, cactus salsa and chirozo con quesa. We woke up the next morning to see snow up in Sedona. Went up for a hike on the Sunrise Trail with Ernie and took some pictures of red rock with snow. Then out to another hike by Oak Creek under huge cottonwoods with the creek turning red from the red mud! On to a wine tasting in Page Springs - the Oak Creek Winery. AZ is becoming a wine area and the wines are quite good. Will visit more in the next weeks. Off to take Ernie on a hike - Sandy... read more

Sedona doesn't creep up on you. You're diving along the highway and wham! - the red rocks start to appear. Massive, otherworldly, they look like gigantic sculpture. No wonder locals have given them nicknames (pet rocks, perhaps?) based on what they look like: coffee pot, Snoopy, shipwreck. We spent the first half-day here exploring the small town, which is quaint in spots - I loved the movie museum with photos of all the films shot here in the 1930s-1970s. But it's also very touristy - lots of t-shirt shops and gee gaws and plenty of business related to the spiritual nature of the place. There is geographical proof that vortexes occur here, the swirling "energy" coming from electro-magnetic fields deep in the earth. Science fact, but it's also been embraced by the new agers with a ... read more

Hans and I are escaping Toronto's record-breaking heatwave for - where else? The desert! But it's a dry heat. Our plans are to spend two nights in Sedona getting our vortexes in proper alignment and then off to Utah to see Monument Valley, Arches National Park, Grand Staircase, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, a place called Mexican Hat and a night at the Bob-Bon Inn and Motel in Kanab UT (http://bobboninn.com/) home to Utah's "Little Hollywood" where dozens of movies and TV series were shot in the 1950s and 1960s. Remember F Troop? You should come. We leave for Phoenix at 8:30 Friday morning.... read more

Nancy's Entry: It was with a heavy heart that I left Southern California today. We sat around the house until about 10:00 a.m., when we pulled out and stopped at the Starbucks -Country Mart one last time. As a person who is affected by weather, the 338 average days of sun (as opposed to Chicago's average 84) with temperatures in the 60's and 70's year round and the added bonus of the ocean, to me it is the perfect place. It seems that the weather allows people to really live and enjoy life here year round, rather than watch it on TV from inside most of the year. Though I was sad to be leaving, we had a lot of fun ahead of us. First on our list was stopping in Victorville, Calfornia along U.S. Route ... read more

The inadvertant Hike

So, remember my legs and the wonderful ugly bright red "hickey" I had? Well it cleared up really fast and there is no more swelling or anything but I was still a little apprehensive about going on any more hikes for at least a few days. Uh, but, yeah... so much for that. So this morning we left at 10:00 for a slow and short walk down the road: regular tennis shoes; 3 bottles of water (one for each of us); no hiking boots; no walking sticks; no food; no overnight gear (okay so the last couple things are a bit of a stretch). In other words we were not prepared for the "road ahead". The first obstacle we had to face were the guardians in the lower camping area. A camper there has two gi-hugic ... read more

We went for a drive out past Sedona and explored some parks on the north east side. We found some wonderful places there where we could pull the trailer in and do some boondocking another time. The elevation is a couple thousand feet higher so it's much cooler - still had snow on the ground! We also found a little community out there at Mormon Lake. We went into a little "saloon" and had an appetizer before heading out again. I got some pictures along the road side on our way back down to Sedona. I'm loving my new little camera! ... read more

Last Tuesday, we departed Mesa for a two night photo safari to Sedona, Arizona. We decided to go mid-week to avoid the weekend crowds and more expensive lodging rates. Our friend Dave who lives in Chandler, AZ, emailed us a list of pet friendly lodgings in Sedona. We chose the Best Western Inn in west Sedona. So, Tuesday afternoon before checking into the BW, we made photo stops at scenic outlooks near Village of Oak Creek, south of Sedona; Bell Rock, the Indian Cliffs and Cathedral Rocks. We also drive to the Sedona airport and made a panorama photo of the Thunder Mountain area. Later that afternoon, when we checked in at the Best Western, my jaw dropped when we entered the outdoor terrace where our room was located. The view of the red rocks of ... read more

28JAN11 Wake up, have breakfast at the motel, as it is included in the price. Not a bad little continental breakfast, consisting, for me at least, of cereal, bagel with cream cheese, fruit and yogurt and orange juice. We head off to see some of the items of interest as advised by the guy at the motel reception when we arrived. First stop, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This is a beautifully simple chapel set high on a rock. Very nice, very simple. It has an awesome shop (see website) that O'Mama would be proud of. Website: https://www.chapeloftheholycross.com/store/ As we drove into town yesterday, we noticed a shopping strip which seemed to have some interesting looking shops. We decide to check them out. To cut a long story short, we spend a couple of hours ... read more

The normal, post Christmas holiday trip to Scottsdale, and often times Sedona, was originally scheduled for Tucson. But with the recent shootings, I would rather comfortably return to Sedona, before a few days in Scottsdale. I need a few days away from the greater Phoenix area, mostly to avoid the crazy crowds attending the National Championship Bowl Game (Oregon and Auburn) in Phoenix this eve. Sedona is a great place to visit anytime of year. This is my third trip here, and the town never seems to get boring. There are still many things to see, and a few places to eat that need our attention. Most of the highly recommended places are packed with locals and tourists. So, if Sedona allows some harmonic convergence (1987) or a simple alcohol induced stupor, this should be a ... read more
