Denise has been behaving badly again you will all be pleased to hear, apparently it was a fat American called Dave, round 2 tonight?! Sure it had something to do with the cocktails. Kim and I stayed stone cold sober of course! After the flight over the Grand Canyon we drove up there for a closer look and to use an American expression it was AWESOME! For anybody who has never done it you really must, because words just cannot describe it, it's a bit like staring at a painting. Oh and we had snow! Then Kimley had to drive back to the hotel because I got altitude sickness! So we ended up staying for a second night in a little city (one horse town) called Williams, on route 66, which was actually quite cute so ... read more

Day two in Lake Havasu City turned out to be even better than the first day. I woke up at 7am, got ready for the day, and was greeted at 8am in the lobby by my uncle. He took me back to the RV park where I had breakfast and then we headed out to the lake to go fishing. At first we weren't having too much luck but slowly but surely the fish started biting. We were on the lake from about 9am to 1pm and caught 5 fish (Stripers - or Striped Bass if you prefer). We would have had 8 but three got away as we were reeling them in. The best one we got was 24" long - apparently it's one of the largest fishes you'd find in the lake since Larry ... read more

After a long drive, I arrived in Lake Havasu City, Arizona! It's beautiful here, and what's better? The temperature was in the mid 80s and the humidity was non-existent. It's currently 79 degrees outside - not my ideal but the humidity is only 11% and I definitely love that. Austin, by comparison, is currently 71 degrees (and an hour later in the day) and has 61% humidity. And, since you're curious, Portland is currently 50 degrees with an unusual 79% humidity. I don't care what you say, Portland is still better :) I got a very early start this morning. I stayed at the Motel 6 in Las Cruces, NM and asked for a 6am wake-up call. I received the call and I remember checking the time on my cell phone and seeing it display 5:02am. ... read more

The next day and we were back following Route 66, coming across two treasures in the towns of Seligman and Oatman. This is the longest surviving stretch of the road, and in these two towns particularly people really try to exploit their Route 66 links, with Route 66 merchandise and memorabilia. In Seligman we caught up with Angel Delgadillo, “Mr Route 66”, co-founder of the first Historic Route 66 Association, shop owner and barber. Though retired, he still does the odd hair cut - but he had a coach load of tourists to deal with when we were there, so unfortunately Tom didn’t manage to get his hair cut! Later in the day and high up in the desert, we came into the small town of Oatman - just in time to witness the staged gun ... read more

We set off for Lake Havasu City at about 10.00am, but not long after setting off we had to turn back because I'd left our passports and traveller's cheques in the safety deposit box in the hotel. Doh! The first part of the trip was on the freeway and big American trucks and big American motorhomes (RVs) heavily outnumbered the cars. This part of the route seemed to go on forever; there was desert on either side running off to mountains in the distance and the view didn't change very much as the road went on in a fairly straight line for over a hundred miles. We then crossed over the Colorado River and turned North to run alongside it all the way to Lake Havasu. Lake Havasu City sits on the Arizona side of the ... read more

London Bridge Arizona

To Havasu and backDoug Pickles Westward ho to the Arizona desert and Lake Havasu. Some may remember a tale of a wealthy American business buying London Bridge under the mistaken belief that he was actually buying Tower Bridge. Well, Lake Havasu is where, brick by brick, London Bridge now stands and it was at this strange town in the middle of the desert that the Batchelor Party weekend began. The atmosphere on the lake as we motor-boated out on Saturday began rather sedately with families picnicking and boats cruising around. However it wasn’t long until we discovered Copper Canyon. If you’ve ever seen footage from videos like “Spring Break Goes Wild” then you’ll have an idea of what we were confronted with. It was reassuring for a sweet innocent Scottish guy like me that even some ... read more

We made it to Lake Havasu last Monday and spent a week of fun and relaxation at Sue and Art's place again. Mike got to go golfing twice so that was good therapy for him. I got to sleep in, play on my computer, catch up on the news at CNN and sit in the sun at the pool! But we also did some touring in the area. Last night Sue was determined to find this desert bar that she had read about so we headed out to Parker, about 30 miles or so from Havasu, then down a dirt road into the desert for about 4 miles. We were really wondering how there could be a bar out in the middle of nowhere when lo and behold, there it was! The Nellie E. Saloon ... read more

Today we woke bright & early (well most of us not early enough to catch the sunrise) and packed up our campsite ready for a short hike round the national park. Some people (sadly not me) saw a roadrunner. Yes, a real roadrunner. I saw a jack rabbit. After the walk we started the long, hot drive into Arizona and to Lake Havasu, our next destination. We stopped in Lake Havasu City to buy groceries for the week. After filling 2 and a half trollies full we proceeded to the check out and payed only $120! This place was great! Then we headed over the original London Bridge to the campsite where we parked and first thing we did was all run into the lake in our clothes. The weather was so hot that once we ... read more

Oh my god this weekend was rippin!! We started the trip convoying it from vegas to Lake Havasu, We rode in Erik's Chevy truck, towing the big boat, Rob and crew in a new hummer and Meryl had her nice RX8. We got to the van park on the river where Erik kept his trailer ( It was a race trailer that had beds, couches, air con, kitchen, TV and a shower, he rides quad bikes). Then in the Arvie we grabbed the esky (or should I say the cooler) and went for a cruise in the boat. It was just before sunset so it was a top time to go for boat ride. We went a while up the river then on the way back one of the guys had a ski behind the boat ... read more
