Phil Fogg - Doug Pickles

Doug Pickles When I think about going around the world, I can't help but think of the Jules Verne book, Around the World in 80 Days. Travel has come along way since 1873 when the book was first published and I will only have half the time that Phileas Fogg had to circumnavigate the globe. On top of that I don't even have the use of his valet Passepartout.

In keeping with the book, I am going to start and finish at the Reform Club in London - I'm not a member so photographic evidence of the exterior will have to do. From there it's across the Atlantic to Boston for a week touring New England before jetting to Las Vegas for a US-style "bachelor party." I promise to behave myself. My round the world ticket then takes me from Los Angeles to Sydney for six days. My last visit to Oz was tragically brief, so I am planning to take full advantage of the legendary Australian hospitality.

The next stage of the trip is the one I am looking forward to most. From Sydney I fly north to Beijing - I have a well-known love for China having spent six months there teaching English, so going back after six years fills me with excitement. Sadly I don't have long in China's capital before boarding the Trans-Siberian train #23 bound for Mongolia. The Trans-Siberian has fascinated me for years. I don't know if it's the scale - it spans eight time zones - or just the thought of days hurtling across the vast Siberian wilderness that does it for me, all I know is I can't believe I've finally got the chance to do it.

17 days of train travel later gets me to Moscow and my final leg. I leave Moscow and travel to Helsinki for their traditional mid-summer festival on June 21st. I then have three days in Berlin with WHRFC playing in a rugby tournament before returning to home to London and the Reform Club.

I will submit blogs as often as I can below, so please do come back and read all about the trip - and keep in touch!

Train 32, Beijing to Ulaan Baatar
Beijing to the Russian Border Doug Pickles The Chinese built the Great Wall to keep the invading Mongol hordes out. Ask a Mongolian to rank their Russian, Japanese and Chinese neighbours in order of preference and the Chinese will always come bottom. In short, there is no love lost between the land of Khan and the land of Han. I arrived at Beijing Central station at 7am in a foul mood, sweating booze. Since landing, 10 hours previously, I'd managed to walk round Tiananmen Square, complete a bar crawl with mixed results and [View Full Entry]

Need I say more?
I didn't want to leave Sydney, so I didn't Doug Pickles I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise to you when I say that Sydney is well known as one of the most beautiful cities on earth situated on a dramatic natural harbour with a fabulous year-round climate with activities and cuisine to suit every taste. But you do need to come here to see it with your own eyes and truly believe it and, thanks to my host and hostess Rory and Julie-Anne, I have just spent a very memorable five days falling in love with this paradise [View Full Entry]

To Havasu and back Doug Pickles Westward ho to the Arizona desert and Lake Havasu. Some may remember a tale of a wealthy American business buying London Bridge under the mistaken belief that he was actually buying Tower Bridge. Well, Lake Havasu is where, brick by brick, London Bridge now stands and it was at this strange town in the middle of the desert that the Batchelor Party weekend began. The atmosphere on the lake as we motor-boated out on Saturday began rather sedately with families picnicking and boats cruising arou [View Full Entry]

Is this good enough?
New England Doug Pickles As promised I was dutifully outside 104 Pall Mall bleary-eyed on a sunny May morning. I was even lucky enough to venture inside and have a quick look round before being ejected on ‘the grounds of security.’ The fact that I had a back pack clearly had nothing to do with it. And so, in the walnut paneled and marbled floor surroundings of the Reform Club, my trip began. Boston is one of those places that doesn’t hold many attractions for the visitor, but you could easily imagine livin [View Full Entry]
