After Darren and I met up with our brother Ryan, we had a quick overview with our guides at Kayak Adventures Worldwide in Seward, a solid dinner, and then an early wake up to meet our boat into the fjords. We had chosen to head all the way out to the Northwestern Fjord; it is an hour longer ride but has substantially fewer visitors (we only saw one other group of kayakers during the four day trip) and excellent wild life viewing. Along the three-hour trip we had amazing views of sea lions, sea otters, humpbacks (which we saw in abundance every day we were out there) and tons of other wild life. The two highlights on the way out were the pod of orcas we were able to follow for a while and hear via ... read more

Dick Eveson’s Alaska Tour - Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park Alaska is famous for many things including great scenery, glaciers, mountains, bears, moose, caribou and mountain sheep. It is also famous for its seashore and sea life. One way to see the sights is to tale en excursion boat to the places you can’t get to by car. From Anchorage we have a choice of Prince William Sound or Resurrection Bay. It is a hard choice to make. On this occasion we chose Resurrection Bay and the nearby Kenai Fjords National Park. The next choice was which excursion boat to take. There are several companies offering service from Seward, Alaska, at the head of Resurrection Bay. I haven’t heard anything bad about any of the companies. So, it was route selection and amenities that ... read more

Day 10 We'd planned to hike Exit Glacier today out to the Harding Ice Field, a strenuous 3.7 mile hike. Unfortunately it started raining last night so hiking was not a great option then at the rangers station we learned that the trail was still full of deep snow. We decided to just hike to the edge of the glacier. The hike was mostly easy, kids ran part of the way. We took the scenic route leading out to the river, crossing a couple of times over logs. Kids got to feel the glacial waters, very cold! We were standing by the glacier when Elias noticed a bear near the top. We watched the bear cross the top of the glacier, good thing it wasn't close to smell our smoked salmon we were eating. We have ... read more

We got up early and hit the road, with a quick stop at Fred Meyer (everything store) for motion sickness bracelets and medicine. We were off to Seward for a wildlife cruise. Well, we were barely out of downtown before we had our first wildlife sighting. A mama and baby moose crossed the Seward highway in front of us as we were leaving town (right near Potter’s Marsh). The sun was shining and it was shaping up to be a beautiful day (at least in Anchorage). As we drove south, we were once again awed by the beautiful views of the Chugach Mountains, Turnagain Arm, Kenai Mountains, and countless glaciers. As we worked our way south on the Kenai Peninsula, the clouds rolled in until we really couldn’t see much with the amount of fog that ... read more

When I finished school in June of 2004, an epic trip 6 months in the making was ripe for the picking. 3 friends and I secured reservations for a backcountry cabin in Kenai Fjords National Park 6 months earlier. We packed our bags and headed to Seward by way of Anchorage, going on a Halibut fishing trip the next day, although 21 hours of daylight meant no night. With kayaks and backpacks in tow, we met the Aialik Bay ferry at 6am June 24- 2 days after summer solstice. The cabin was a 50 mile boat ride through the roughest seas I have ever been on. The seas were so rough, our 4 nights in the Cabin turned into 3 nights, then 2, then 6. You see, the captain of the ferry said the weather was ... read more
