Weather wise it hasn't been bright sunny skies , but hey ho we make the best of it and we have seen such dramatic skies and landscapes and marvelled at the conditions that the native people and Alaskan pioneers have coped so resourcefully and we have no idea what it would be like in winter. Our journey for 3 days took us down the Kenai peninsula to Seward and Homer , we almost bumped into a cow moose munching grass at the side of the road - I was just going to say to Ros " there's a horse " when we both said ? " it's a moose ". We took a 3.5 hour boat trip and you will see from the photos it was rainy and cloudy but that didn't matter I almost lost ... read more

We got our wake-up call at 5:30AM with our disembarkation scheduled for 7:15 in “Wave 3”. This is a departure from previous exits from HAL ships where luggage off-load tags were called (for example, our bags were tagged with BLACK-1). This time each wave included several types of tags and colors that were on your disembarkation instructions but they only called the wave. I just got some rolls/croissants to eat with some cheese and cold-cuts. Sharon got a couple waffles. We went back to our cabin and waited as first Wave 1 was offloaded, followed by Wave 2. We pulled our carry-ons with us as we went down to Deck 2 to exit the ship for one final time (at least for now) when they called Wave 3. The cruise director Jordan was there to say ... read more

Whenever I was asked about our timeline for arriving in Alaska, or for touring the state, I always answered that we were kind of freestyling it with the exception of one day that was already booked – 31 May – and we would not miss that day. Last year we found a good early booking deal including a round-trip train ride from Anchorage to Whittier and the Prince William Sound Glacier Cruise with a full meal-deal of Prime Rib and baked Salmon. What a great choice we made. The train ride was exceptional with the Alaska Railroad providing a “tour guide” on PA as we made the 2 hour passage along the Turnagain Arm, through the valleys and forests that make up the Chugach National Forest only to pop out on the other side of the ... read more

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise - that's what we did today. We boarded a large catamaran at 10:00 am and made our way through the national park. We toured three glaciers - Bear, Holgate and Aialik. Twice during the trip we encountered Humpback Whales. They gave us an amazing show. The best show was between a sea lion and harbor seal. The seal thought he would climb on the rocks next to an old sea lion. The sea lion did not like the idea at all. Finally after some loud arguing the harbor seal jumped off the rock. We also saw but didn't get pictures of silver salmon and Dall's porpoises. We saw puffins flying low over the water, Kittiwakes and Common Murres hanging out on the rocks. The glaciers are always a real treat. We ... read more

Breakfast is going to give us all a kick start for our hike - eggs, bacon, cereal, juice, bagels or toast, and more. We’re going to need the hike to walk off the calories. We load in vans to our starting point about a half hour away. Bear and group hiking directions are given and we are off. Anna stops us quite a few times to point out and have us experience different plants, berries, trees, and lichen. Luke reiterates or adds clarity to the lessons for those of us nearer the back. There are two toxic or poisonous plants in abundance that gets pointed out to us and they make sure we all can identify them so we stay clear of them. The children do a great job of yelling back to the group whenever ... read more

Had to set an alarm this morning so I’d get up way early enough to get some wash done and pack up for the week long adventure to go to three different wilderness lodges across the seven days. Since I’m used to simply taking from the car each night whatever clothes I need for the very next day, this requires some thought I haven’t had to do thus far. Listening and going by the weather reports up here is worse than in Wisconsin. Bottom line is whatever the weather looks like at the moment, it could be completely different in just a few hours. I decide not to take my winter coat along but do tuck in the long underwear just in case. I also take one pair of shorts just in case. From what I ... read more

After Darren and I met up with our brother Ryan, we had a quick overview with our guides at Kayak Adventures Worldwide in Seward, a solid dinner, and then an early wake up to meet our boat into the fjords. We had chosen to head all the way out to the Northwestern Fjord; it is an hour longer ride but has substantially fewer visitors (we only saw one other group of kayakers during the four day trip) and excellent wild life viewing. Along the three-hour trip we had amazing views of sea lions, sea otters, humpbacks (which we saw in abundance every day we were out there) and tons of other wild life. The two highlights on the way out were the pod of orcas we were able to follow for a while and hear via ... read more

Dick Eveson’s Alaska Tour - Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park Alaska is famous for many things including great scenery, glaciers, mountains, bears, moose, caribou and mountain sheep. It is also famous for its seashore and sea life. One way to see the sights is to tale en excursion boat to the places you can’t get to by car. From Anchorage we have a choice of Prince William Sound or Resurrection Bay. It is a hard choice to make. On this occasion we chose Resurrection Bay and the nearby Kenai Fjords National Park. The next choice was which excursion boat to take. There are several companies offering service from Seward, Alaska, at the head of Resurrection Bay. I haven’t heard anything bad about any of the companies. So, it was route selection and amenities that ... read more

Day 10 We'd planned to hike Exit Glacier today out to the Harding Ice Field, a strenuous 3.7 mile hike. Unfortunately it started raining last night so hiking was not a great option then at the rangers station we learned that the trail was still full of deep snow. We decided to just hike to the edge of the glacier. The hike was mostly easy, kids ran part of the way. We took the scenic route leading out to the river, crossing a couple of times over logs. Kids got to feel the glacial waters, very cold! We were standing by the glacier when Elias noticed a bear near the top. We watched the bear cross the top of the glacier, good thing it wasn't close to smell our smoked salmon we were eating. We have ... read more
