Just short of 10 weeks to explore Alaska, meet the people, experience new things and reflect, taking stock of life in the process. I feel very fortunate and am so very grateful for this opportunity. This site is intended to simply let caring family and friends know I am safe and of course to share the journey. I welcome all to stay in touch via the public comment buttons or private message. You can also subscribe which sends an email to you whenever I actually post. Subscribing does not trigger any other types of email - simply notifies and provides a link should you choose to visit. Give me feedback on posts or just say hello - I'll be happy to hear from you while 'on-the-road' in Alaska. Appreciate all the support! God bless!

I have posted new for Alaska Days 13 - 17 and then re-posted Days 18-21 which were previously posted with text but no pictures. The reposting of Days 18-21 include the pictures I couldn't get in while I was there. Sorry it's been taking so long. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with getting the rest of last year's ventures documented here. Thanks for everyone's interest. Rita... read more

How does that saying go - - "She's back!" Finally, I am getting back to finishing Alaska trip posts for all those who keep asking and have been so patiently waiting. It took me over six weeks to recoup from the 2.5 month journey. I slept a ton the first few weeks. Then came the holy and holidays, the annual Puerto Vallarta trek and now I am finally getting back to capturing the Alaskan memories I missed providing in print. I give no guarantees as to the number or timing of my future posts but I am set on getting it done. I cannot believe how many days I have left to script and provide pictures but all I have to do is close my eyes and the memories come flying back so know I'll not ... read more

This is the last post to be done while I'm still actually in Alaska. I leave for home on a 6am flight Thursday morning after the most incredible 9 1/2 weeks traveling all over this astounding state. It has been a busy yet quite reflective last few days. As I've looked back, I am not even sure I believe all the memories are for real. I have already been asked what was the best and what was the most unexpected and I just can't answer at this particular point. I am still absorbing. Am I ready to be home? ...Yes. Am I ready to leave Alaska? ...No, not really. Such mixed emotions but one thing is very clear - - what I take with me in memories and experiences is almost unbelievable. I will post an ... read more

Homer and vicinity has been astounding for discovery - drives, walks, history, wildlife, and oh yes, plenty of rain. Yesterday was clouds and rain all day. There actually was sunshine most of this second morning followed by clouds this afternoon and then rain again. It was great to be out of the rain gear and boots for this one day though. I am thankful for myself and yet hope you'll join in prayer or at least send positive thoughts for all of the people throughout Alaska impacted by flooding creeks and rivers. There are a couple of closures on main highways but for the most part, it's the low lying towns and houses off the main track - so far. Today was a reprieve for many but it's unclear whether it's been enough receding of any ... read more

The SeaLife Center in Seward is extraordinary. Aside from rich informational displays about marine wildlife in Alaska and various educational movies, they have live rehabbed sea lions, birds, and right now had two rescued walrus youngsters. First some marine facts to enrich your day: · Alaska’s coastline stretches nearly 45,000 miles. It is bordered by two oceans, three seas, and the Gulf of Alaska. · Russia and Alaska are only 53 miles apart. The Bering Sea is bordered by Russia, Alaska’s mainland, the Aleutian Islands, and the Commander Islands. At the northernmost part lies the Bering Strait where Russia and Alaska almost touch. · The Bering Sea covers over 885,000 square miles – almost twice the size of Alaska · Over half the fish and shellfish caught in U.S. waters comes from the Bering Sea · ... read more

Included at least a few of the pictures today. I hiked to Exit Glacier even though it was raining. I was just going to go to the Outwash in front of the glacier but then could not keep from going the extra distance to the viewpoint right at the Glacier. I stopped at taking the 8 miles all the way up. It was a great hike and beautiful to stand there even in the rain and listen to the water rushing about and just enjoy the spectacle. The trails were outlined well and at least periodically I was reminded there were other people out and about amidst the trails. Afterward I investigated some other park like areas but the glacier hike was the highlight of the day. There's quite a bit already closed. Even the National ... read more

Just letting folks know I arrived in Seward safe and sound and planning to be here two nights. The drive was absolutely gorgeous albeit a bit long from Fairbanks - otherwise uneventful as in no problems. Actually had sun off and on all the way here. On arrival here they told me national weather service had now put out another wind/rain warning for the area covering tonight and possibly two days which includes potential flooding due to how saturated everything is already from the recent rains. I have a view of the Bay from the room so it'll be pretty to watch if it turns out too ugly to even go out. Hiking might be out but there's other things so we'll see. Have to expect unknown weather this time of year and I'm so grateful ... read more

Busy weekend. I am going to head to Seward first thing tomorrow morning since weather seems to have gone as predicted - wind should be lower and just normal rain by the time I get in vs. the heavy rain and wind they had today. I thought it was about an 8.5 hour drive but understand from some folks I spoke with yesterday that it will be more like 10 hours. So heading out early morning to arrive sometime evening. Will likely be too tired to post so please, assume no news is good news. It's all well traveled highway. I'll be fine. Will post an update Tuesday some time. God bless!... read more

Hello all from Fairbanks Alaska! I've had a great week that began by meeting up with some folks I had originally met on the Denali excursion who had also continued traveling in Alaska. We all crossed paths again here in Fairbanks for drinks the first evening (Monday evening) and then breakfast/brunch the next morning. They are headed up to see the Polar bears and since they are avid photographers, it will be a great opportunity for them. As for me, I've been to the Visitor Center here in Fairbanks which is really good with some great historical displays. I've been to their Bird Sanctuary, a Pioneer Village (mostly closed but museum was excellent), the Large Animal Station (University of Alaska), drove most of the Steese Highway until I came across snow laden roadway where I decided ... read more

Hello to all. I have finished all sites I wanted to see and some I didn't know I wanted to see until I returned here to Sitka after having been on the 8-day Alaskan Dream Glacier and Wildlife Cruise aboard the Admiralty Dream. The cruise was everything and more than what was expected. There were just over fifty of us plus the 20 person crew. Our time was filled daily with education, adventure, and extraordinary sites. The food was unbelievably good. I have so much to share when I get to doing these days individually. We visited a few villages and met the Tlingit people. In fact our cultural guide was Tlingit and filled with fascinating information and stories of the culture and people both historically and current. We also had a scientific guide who taught ... read more
