I awaken with a start thinking wow – what a dream. It’s early so I start cleaning up pictures to post with yesterday’s story. Takes but a moment to realize no dream at all – Bob really did take me up in his plane and everything comes rushing back. I don’t know that anything on this trip will top that for sure. I have a timetable to meet today because I have a reservation to do the Matanuska Glacier Trek at 11:30. I work on the blog a bit while greeting the dogs and the surroundings wake up to another day. I meet Diane who is the one I actually reserved with. Brenda had to go out for the day so Diane has come in to see to things. I am again beset with a breakfast ... read more

A quiet morning by choice, then got moving for a great afternoon and planned early evening. And then...I had the most incredible, inconceivable, remarkable, unique, and astonishing thing happen for the evening that simply took my breath away - and kept taking it away for hours. Let's start with the day's beginning though. I woke up this morning after only a few hours sleep and shortly after going outside, the dogs joined me - Patch, Tig, Rosie, and Nemo. There is a spirit here at Matanuska Lodge that permeates everything - including the dogs. It is truly a hidden treasure that I hope more folks will discover as I have. Tig stuck around me while the other dogs played. He stood close as if waiting for something. Being a dog lover, I couldn't resist. I picked ... read more

A late start to the day today not because I slept in but because I was moseying around. With bills paid, route planned to Matanuska Lodge, and other things out of the way, the time comes to move on. I will be back to Anchorage but for now, I am mountain bound and excited to leave the city. The rolling hills with mountainous background as I leave Anchorage on the Glenn Highway does not adequately prepare me for what is to come. Every turn brings a new striking view that has me commenting out loud. It is an extraordinary drive. I have taken two to three times the number of pictures I have posted here and I am certain the pictures will not do justice to what I have seen today. Every scene builds on the ... read more

First part of the day was simply getting the car ready for road travel and some other preparedness. At the moment, I could probably last a week or two if the car broke down in the wilderness given the snacks and water. And no, the snacks are not all chocolate - nuts, raisins, peanut butter, etc. The staples of road travel. On the way to Target, I saw a sign for a place offering helicopter instruction. Mmm, that could be really interesting. Unfortunately I doubt it could be done in one day and on second thought, me in charge of flying a helicopter is actually a pretty scary thought!! Guess that might be one experience I'll pass in consideration of the safety of others. I had a bit of time to spare this afternoon so I ... read more

Packing was a definite challenge - needed to consider having shorts to winter coat and everything in between. Stopping to do wash is only going to be every 10-14 days. The absolute best part was that when done, not one business suit included! That I could handle. Arrival at the Milwaukee airport was no different than any business travel day with the exception of having more luggage. It just wasn't real that a trip to Alaska, that dream trip you hope to make some day, had actually begun. Having exhausted myself in finishing work and trying to pack and get ready plus a myriad of other things, even the 5 1/2 hr flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage went fast since I slept most of the way. Then that announcement on the plane that our initial decent ... read more
