I'm so full I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to make it back to my room. Maybe if someone gives me a push I might be able to roll back, but otherwise things are looking a bit grim. Things like Princess Cruises are the reason why so many Americans are so 'healthy'. I haven't eaten so well or so much in my life. Food aside, there's not a whole lot else to do on the cruise, although morning trivia is always a riot..ahem. The only thing left to do now is join bingo, although I'm not sure we could withstand the horde of stampeding granny's should Yash and I manage to call bingo before one of them. Thankfully though, the scenery on the cruise more than makes up for it. Glacier Bay, the fjords, ... read more

Greetings all! Just a brief addendum to our journal entry of last night. We've had many requests for mail drop addresses, so I wanted to send our first one along to you. We will be arriving in Glacier Bay within a week or so, and then passing back through there two weeks later, and then in Kake, AK sometime around mid-July, if all goes as planned. If anyone would like to mail anything to us, you can do so at these addresses. Both places have agreed to hold items for our arrival. You will need to write all the lines for them to know what to do with it. PLEASE HOLD FOR ARRIVAL: Jeff Frigon and/or Stephanie Webber (sea kayakers) Visitor Information Center Glacier Bay National Park P.O. Box 140 Gustavus, AK 99826-0140 PLEASE HOLD FOR ... read more

Extremes. A word that describes my Alaskan experience better than any other is: Extremes. Alaska is a land of extremes: Extremely beautiful nature, extremely cold, extreme weather changes, extreme daylight changes, extreme tidal changes, extremely strange people, extreme amounts of fantastic wild life and so on. So, it was only natural that my journey through Alaska became one of extremes as well. From having the most beautiful moment of my life to feeling scared, lonely and frustrated, my Alaskan experience was one to remember. I think I hinted in my last blog entry at the fact that Alaska is still completely "shut down" which meant that getting around was extremely difficult. It also meant that in my three weeks in Alaska I only met two other tourists and believe you me, I did travel around a ... read more

Well, we finally arrived in the 2nd hardest state to travel to in the beautiful United States. My first impressions were, majored in environmental science, that this is the greates place on earth. The water is so clean, trees too green, absolutely beautiful! My dad and I are crusing the inside passage with stops in Ketchikan Skagway, Juneau, & Sitka. Then the land protion is Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali, Valdez, then back to Anchorage. FAst forward In Juneau we took a helicopter ride to the top of t a glacier. This was the greatest flight of my life; fast, great visuals, and a little scary! The pilot was an experienced bush pilot. He took us on a wild ride, but felt completely safe. The glacier was excellent, espically the water *(check pic caption). In Sitka: Prior to ... read more

An integral (integrated?)being knows without going, sees without looking, and accomplishes without doing. Lao Tzu LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 21, 2005, Wednesday. We were up early again. We though the idea of renting a motorboat and taking it out on Clover Passage seemed like a good idea. Well, with PFD in place, a young man, Colon, instructed Bob on how to operate the motor, however, he did not allow for a hands on lesson. Motor humming, Bob at the controls, we proceeded up onto the dock!? Whoops?! Wrong way! Given the angle at which we were hanging off the dock, I don’t know why we didn’t go into the “drink”. (Remember this water has been carved by glaciers, so it is about 1000 feet deep!) Colon to the rescue, this 15 year old, very calmly ... read more

Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty in every age of life really neve grows old.____Franz Kafka LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 18, 2005, Saturday. This is a full day on the ferry as we move closer to Ketchikan, Alaska. Our room/berth was just above the motor and next to an outside door. So, between the motor and the door slamming it wasn’t the most restful night. We were up early looking for orca whales, but not a one appeared. The Forest Service has a Ranger on board and he/she gives talks several times a day. The ferry has also set two outside decks for tents or lounge chairs, campers. It is called the solarium and has heating elements in the ceiling for the lounge chair campers. The campers also have the opportunity to ... read more

After a month in Grants Pass we headed north again to visit my mom in The Dalles. Stayed there almost a week then left for the Alaska cruise. The cruise was wonderful. The moms had a great time. About ½ of the time on the cruise it was cold and rainy, but the scenery was gorgeous. We saw a lot of wildlife from the ship and of course the food was awesome. Mike and I took a whale watching cruise out of Juneau. We saw so many bald eagles. Probably about 20 or more just in one day. And we actually saw whales. We saw the exciting stuff just as we turned around to head back to port. The captain turned the boat around and all the other people went back inside the cabin. I stayed ... read more

Sailing from Warm Springs Bay after a rustic night on Baranof Island, we enjoyed breakfast aboard Mañana II. The vessel headed up Stephens Passage past Admiralty Island to reach Holkam Bay. We sailed past numerous small islands, most of which were unnamed, said Captain Coon. Tracy Arm fjord leads off from Holkam Bay. Sailing up the fjord Mañana II now passed icebergs large and small. At the end of the fjord is Sawyer Glacier. The glacier divides into two flows. North Sawyer enters Tracy Arm while South Sawyer enters Endicott Arm fjord, the latter infrequently visited. The glacier extends like a river of ice down into the fjord. Mañana II was able to navigate right up to North Sawyer glacier, getting much closer to it than can modern cruise ships. From Holkam Bay, Mañana II continued ... read more

After calling at Wrangell and Sitka, Mañana II docked at Warm Springs Bay. Warm Springs Bay is on the opposite side of Baranof Island from Sitka. It would be called "off the grid" today. The accommodations were rustic wooden bunkhouses dating back to who knows when. There was no electricity. At night, we lit kerosene lamps for illumination. The facilities were out back. I felt like I had stepped into the 1961 film North to Alaska, about the Alaska Gold Rush era. A definite pioneer felt permeated the settlement. There were warm springs here for bathing, but we did not go in them. There was a day of trail hiking to Baranof Lake and exploring the wilderness. I fished for the first time in the Baranof River. Another adventure!... read more
