Inside for the Outside

Greetings! We are two sea kayakers/outdoor educators originally from Maine and New Hampshire paddling for a cause. On June 6, 2006, we are embarking on a 1500 mile expedition, beginning in Skagway, Alaska, ending in Olympia, Washington, paddling the outer route of what is commonly known as the "Inside Passage". What's more, we are using our trip as a vehicle to raise awareness about the importance of outdoor education for at-risk youth, as well as to raise money for Exeter Alternative High School in Exeter, New Hampshire. For news and updates on our trip as well as information about how to get involved, read on... we look forward to sharing news of our expedition, "Inside for the Outside: Paddling Alaska's Inside Passage to Promote Outdoor Education for At-Risk Youth".

Greetings from Ketchikan! It has been a long time since we’ve been able to update, but finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived: the next installment! It has been a long journey, filled with pleasant and unpleasant surprises that have dramatically affected the course our trip has taken. But, as the old adage says, it truly is about the journey, and not the destination. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of this. We left Gustavus on July 9, late in the evening. We had waited most of the day for strong winds to subside, and almost thought we’d have to wait another day to launch, but by 6:30 pm we were able to load our boats and launch from the public dock area. We crossed Icy Passage to Pleasant Island, and paddled around ... read more

Hey all.... we're safe and sound in Ketchikan, AK, and will be here for about a week-long hiatus. Here's the photographs and route map we promised a few weeks ago to compliment the journal entry we posted from Gustavus. Enjoy, and stay tuned for more pictures and journals in the next few days!... read more

Greetings from Gustavus, AK, everyone! All we can do from here is a very quick entry due to computer availability and internet connection speed... so, apologies for the absolute dearth of pictures and details. We'll get those along to you as soon as we possibly can, because we have some good images and some even better stories! We left Juneau June 18th and headed west across Lynn Canal in the general direction of Icy Strait. The very next day, our friends Mike and Kristen, with whom we stayed in Juneau had a beautiful, healthy baby. Looks like we got out just in time! Congratulations guys! We enjoyed more beautiful weather and favorable seas as we passed through the remainder of Lynn Canal and headed through the Couverden Island group at the south tip of the Chilkat ... read more

MAIL CALL!

Greetings all! Just a brief addendum to our journal entry of last night. We've had many requests for mail drop addresses, so I wanted to send our first one along to you. We will be arriving in Glacier Bay within a week or so, and then passing back through there two weeks later, and then in Kake, AK sometime around mid-July, if all goes as planned. If anyone would like to mail anything to us, you can do so at these addresses. Both places have agreed to hold items for our arrival. You will need to write all the lines for them to know what to do with it. PLEASE HOLD FOR ARRIVAL: Jeff Frigon and/or Stephanie Webber (sea kayakers) Visitor Information Center Glacier Bay National Park P.O. Box 140 Gustavus, AK 99826-0140 PLEASE HOLD FOR ... read more

Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for... a blog entry that actually includes paddling! We finally finished up our business in Skagway on June 8, after a trip to the Yukon, the curing of the epoxy on Steph's boat, and the eagerly awaited arrival of our tent pole replacement. (YAY team Retlin!). Amidst lots of contradictory advice (opinions), we were faced with the decision of whether to shove off that night or to get a Voyageur start early the following morning. We opted for the early morning departure despite good conditions the night before. We saw Pete and Phil off on an overnight paddling trip of their own with a pizza from the Red Onion, and headed home for an early bedtime. Dawn (if there is such a thing here) found Lynn Canal mirror calm- ... read more

So here we are in Skagway, AK- finally at the end of our motor-powered journey, and on the cusp of beginning a longer, human-powered journey: the culmination of two years of planning and preparation. A brief recap of the past two weeks..... we left off with our arrival in Olympia, I believe. We spent six wonderful days in Olympia, WA, and in the course of that time, managed to completely overtake Meg and Cary's house and garage with expedition gear and food. Without their help and hospitality, we probably wouldn't have pulled it all together! We took some time to spend catching up with friends- dinners together, and a day of hiking, birding, and photography in the Olympic National Forest. As the week wore on, we increasingly put our noses to the grindstone, so to speak, ... read more

Just a very brief entry for now- we have been traveling "just a wee bit" and have been fairly busy, but we wanted to keep you all filled in every step of the way! Our final days in Mankato were, needless to say, insanely busy and more than a little stressful. Our last days at work were May 12, I graduated from my Master's program in experiential education on May 13, and we began the drive back to New England on May 14th, sometime early in the morning (in fact, the moon was still setting). In the background of all of this excitement was the ever-present, all-encompassing project of weighing, measuring and packaging some 600 lbs. of food, moving everything we own out of our apartment and into our truck and a UHAUL trailer, and cleaning ... read more

Welcome to "planning and preparation" update number two.... Classes are officially over at MSU. Thesis turned in, and Steph's graduation garb is pressed and ready to go. Three workdays left on the calendar. For most, this would be a time to cut loose and celebrate! For us, it is time to get down to business. We have until May 13th to finish purchasing, rationing, and packaging our expedition food, gathering the necessary gear for our trip, to say goodbye to our friends, and pack up and move out of our apartment. We're surprised that no one has started a pool on how many hours of sleep we'll be getting this week! Since our last update, we have had many exciting developments: We recently made a trip to the St. Peter Co-Op to make some enormous bulk ... read more

Greetings, and welcome to the madness that is expedition planning! This trip has been two long years in the making, but with a mere 47 days until we launch our kayaks in Skagway, Alaska, we are coming down to the proverbial wire with working out all of the ever-so-complicated logistics of making this trip happen. Our apartment has been a bit of a mess these days (for those of you who have visited recently, you can insert your own description). Since January we have had three food dehydrators running nonstop, heating our house and drying everything from indian curry to spaghetti sauce to blueberries to beef jerkey. We will be bringing over 600 lbs. of rations, divided into 3-week caches, so we truly are faced with the challenge of drying, vaccum-bagging, measuring, repackaging, and dividing mostly ... read more
