Sunday August 17, 2008 We began the second part of our adventure in Seward Alaska. Early in the morning we said our goodbyes to family and the Volendam and enjoyed a cruise into the waters of the beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park. Wildlife was abundant we saw many different sea birds, puffins, sea lions, seals, sea otters and whales. Returning to Seward we boarded our motor coach for the 3-hour trip to Anchorage that took us through the Chugach National Forest and the shores of the Turnagain Arm. Sunday August 17 - Tuesday August 19 We spent two nights in Anchorage a modern city of 270,000. The Visitors Center is a traditional log cabin with a sod roof and beautiful flowers and hanging flowerpots. You can find everything in this city a Simons Mall, Nordstrom’s, museums, ... read more

In Search of the Midnight Sun August 8/9/10/11, 2008 - Anchorage After our Denali day, we drove about 25 miles south and spent the night at Cantwell RV park. It had great, clean and heated! bathroom facilities that we really appreciated. Some of these parks sure could use a lesson on keeping up their facilities. The truck camper has been working well, as long as we keep the rotation going - Larry up first, gets dressed, puts the dog out, makes coffee while I make the bed (while still in it!) and crawl down to dress and he moves to the back end of the camper. Today we had our first run in as I jumped down faster than he moved and I ricochet onto a corner of the cupboard and have a huge bruise on ... read more

August 6, 2008 I drove out of Anchorage with my friend Chris and did a little bit of hiking. This area is north of Fort Richardson, the army base, and soldiers come out here and do physical training. Beautiful!!!... read more

Day One (Travel Day) We left the ranch in the hands of Daughter Beth, Grandson Max, and Granddaughter Emily (God help the animals!) and motored off to Dallas Ft. Worth Intergalactic you-can-get-everything-you-want Airport. Neat place; parking is only $17/day (X 17 days = $289 - FRAK!). So, we opted for the $10/day remote uncovered parking. Problem in parking outside in Texas is hail... Good news. They were offering valet parking at the same rate as remote. Good start after all. Got on a 757, which is a longer version of the 737. We booked aisle seats across from each other for the 6+ hour flight. Mike’s seat buddy had elbows the size of hams and won the battle for the arm rest for the entire flight. Note to intergalactic flyers: Get a window seat for some ... read more

My brother in law and i went to play some golf today, after we went to "Flo's pancake house" for breakfest. Flo's was great and i havent had such a breakfest for ages. anyways, we went to his farv course but they were holding a tournament so we couldnt play there. We went to a very public place and rented a set for me and we started off. it was a complete joke, not that i hadnt played the game for 2-3 years but the course, the fariway was more or less rough and the green was 20% concrete with a carpet ontop. when we got to hole number 6, a bum was sitting at the teabox with his beer. after the drive we went to get the balls and some local kid came riding his ... read more

There i was, just got off in Anchorage, Alaska, i was really tired after 24 hours of travelling. I went to go through the passport control, no problems there. I took my passport and proceeded to get my bagage, when i heard a voice "Mr. Turner, would you please come this way?" hah! i was going to be interrogated. They wanted to know if i knew how severe a crime it was to smuggle stuff, if i was doing anything like that, apperently they seemed more conserned about smuggling birds then drugs. that bird flu is a serious thing over here. Anyway, after the little conversation i went down to get my bagage. When i went through the customs, they were suspicious at my bagage, jeez, they went through my suitcases and when they opened the ... read more

Today I made the 125-mile ride from Anchorage to Seward. It was cloudy and overcast but then again it made for some unique photos. I traveled down Alaska Highway 1 down the Cook Inlet Turnagain Arm inlet that also leads to the Kenai Peninsula. Tides play a very large part of the Cook Inlet and it was out on this particular time I went through the area. Locals reminded me of the dangers of the mudflats. Beside mountains, forests and glaciers, Anchorage is home to mudflats that encompass the tidelands beneath the upper Cook Inlet and the Turnagain Arm. At low tide, the inlet is nearly void of water. The mudscape looks serene and solid, but tourists should not be fooled. They are like quicksand and lives have been lost because people have ventured onto the ... read more

Hi guys, I'm just starting to thaw out and get warm again. What started out as a relaxing ride from Fairbanks to Anchorage soon turned into one of the coldest days in my ride. I don't mind riding in colder temps but after 4-5 hours of 44 to 48 degrees no matter how well you are dressed, it starts to go through you to the bone. It was also raining off and on during the trip. My back is holding up pretty good although I may have to get a massage while I'm in Anchorage. Also, I noticed that my front tire is cupping a little bit with only 3,000 miles on it. Front suspension seems good at slow speeds, however, when I take my hands off the handlebars the front wheel wobbles. It comes out ... read more
