Got 2 Go - Larry & Pat

We are a newly retired 50ish (heavy on the ish) couple from the Prairies in Canada. As farmers we travelled only in the winter and have been to about 25 countries but have not seen much of North America. So now is the time! Have RV will travel.

It's beautiful here but much is spindly trees and swampy.
(Note: It appears today that TravelBlog is having problems with the pictures showing up on their website. I hope they recitify the problem and they will show up for you.) n Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 7 The Road from the Kenai to Dawson City - August 16/17 2008 We headed back up out of the Kenai Penninsula, through Anchorage and onto the Glenn Highway eastbound for Glenallen. The drive was another spectacular Scenic Byway - lots of curves and cliffs. I told Larry “just drive and I’ll look”. I think he peeks once in a while and I [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 6 The Kenai August 12, 2008 - Prince of Wales Sound We headed south out of Anchorage about 8 AM intending to drive to the Kenai River area. Larry usually checks the weather in the morning and he said it is supposed to be a nice day - somewhat overcast and about 60F but that the rest of the week said 60% chance of showers. So, as navigator, I knew Whittier was only 60 miles away and that’s where we planned to do a glacier cruise on our way back out of the [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun August 8/9/10/11, 2008 - Anchorage After our Denali day, we drove about 25 miles south and spent the night at Cantwell RV park. It had great, clean and heated! bathroom facilities that we really appreciated. Some of these parks sure could use a lesson on keeping up their facilities. The truck camper has been working well, as long as we keep the rotation going - Larry up first, gets dressed, puts the dog out, makes coffee while I make the bed (while still in it!) and crawl down to dress and he moves to the [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 4 August 6, 2008 Denali This day apparently had more sun than they had seen in a month here. We went to the Information Center in the Park to book our bus pass for the next day to drive into the Park. They only allow private vehicles to drive to the 15 mile mark. But, there are many options for bus tours. We opted for the most popular and cheapest using the regular green school bus type transportation. You can also book for how many miles or hours you want to travel into [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 3 August 3/4, 2008 On the ferry, we visited with an English couple who have bought a motorhome in the US and have been travelling North America for three years (with trips home to England in between). They are shipping the motorhome back to England this fall. He said they can double their money by reselling it there. We noticed a lot of different languages in Skagway. There are many international travellers coming in mostly by cruise ship. But, we have been keeping track of license plates and so far have seen [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 2 July 29/30, 2008 Arrived in Whitehorse and planned a couple days to recoup and renew our groceries, laundry, body and soul and plan the next phase of our Alaska trip. A trip to the visitor’s center and a look at the weather confirmed our original plan to head south to Skagway if the weather looked good and north if not. The idea being we would go down to the coast first and take the ferry from Skagway to Haines and carry on through the south area of Alaska and return via Anchorage, [View Full Entry]

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 1 July 22, 2008 Departure day dawned bright and sunny. The truck camper’s packed (or overpacked) and our great neighbors are willingly looking after our house and yard again. Thanks! We arrived in Strathmore, AB in time to take Larry’s Aunt Jean out for supper. We camped at the Strathmore Rodeo Campground. It was nearly full of construction and oil workers. Diesel in Strathmore was $1.40.9. July 23, 2008 Our drive from Strathmore to Jasper was only about 300km but it took us all day. We didn’t stop in Banff or Lake Louis [View Full Entry]

On Sept. 26th we crossed from Yarmouth, NS to Bar Harbor, Maine on the CAT ferry. It was fast but it was rough. It rides on top of the waves like a cork I think. I much preferred the nice, big, slow boat to Newfoundland. It must have been a new moon when we arrived in Bar Harbor at about 7:30 at night as it was pitch dark when we found a campground. Next day we set out to make it to Albany, New York. We decided on the Interstate Highways and encountered a lot more traffic than we are used [View Full Entry]

Nova Scotia - Canada's Ocean Playground (as their license plate says) Indeed the province is almost surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. A province of 1 million people (Sask size) - mostly Celtic (Scottish and Irish) origin, 18% French Acadians, 4% Blacks and 20,000 Mi'kmaq'. The Mi'kmaq of course were here first, the French were the next settlers but most were expelled by the English in the great deportation in 1755, some to Louisiana where they became Cajuns (southern term for Acadians). The Blacks are from the post-slave era in the Caribbean and 13 colonies of the States. An interest [View Full Entry]

Newfoundland - Sept 15/16/17/18 We arrived on The Rock, stomachs settled but somewhat tired, in Port aux Basques at 6:30am, that is, 7:00am NFL time. It was actually a smooth crossing. We have only 4 days to spend here because we are booked on the ferry from Argentia on the other side of the province on Monday. It only runs once a week, on Mondays, at this time of year. So we have to make decisions on what we can see in 4 days. It's a necessity to go through Corner Brook on #1 highway - the only way to the [View Full Entry]
