Wednesday 20/06/12 – We woke up to the sound of rain this morning, a sound that remained with us until well after lunch. During the winter months, most parts of the Denali National Park are inaccessible by vehicles (including helicopters) due to heavy snows or unfavourable weather. There are also many parts of the park where motorised vehicles are not allowed. For this reason, the park rangers have a working dog sled team that allows them access to these areas for transporting rangers and equipment around the park, or even the odd rescue of hikers. The dogs are rarely used for these purposes in the summer months but are instead used to educate and entertain any tourists that are willing to stand in the mud and pouring rain for 45 minutes ‘ooohing’ and ‘aaahing’ every time ... read more

First the disappointment. In Dawson City, when I got my oil change, the repair guy let me know that a couple of belts in the car needed changing as they were cracking. He told me to get it done as soon as was reasonable, but I wasn't in any particular danger. He also told me that it wouldn't be too expensive. Well, I went to a Midas place in Anchorage and inquired about getting it done and it's going to be about 300 dollars!! That's 25 percent of what I paid for the car. That's not really cheap, I'm afraid to say. Now I don't really know what to do about it. I know that in the end I will probably get it done, but, man, that's more than I really want to put into a ... read more

I got up fairly early and was treated to fog wisping about on the surface of the lake. It was quite beautiful. I felt lucky, even though it wasn't what I had thought it would be when the guy in the state park the day before had told me about it. Nevertheless I felt quite well-rested, all things considered. My back was rather unforgiving though. I got up and went into town to try to find some place that would have breakfast. I couldn't find anything obvious. I was really wanting to just get out of town. So I started out. Then I saw a Safeway. I went in to see if they had anything breakfast-like. They didn't have much, not even muffins. I was disappointed, but I got some apples and chocolate, to call breakfast. ... read more

One doesn't have to travel far to see things that can confound and fill the spirit. I've seen it all today, and it's only 10:15am. I've packed everything in the apartment, including the coffeepot, so what choice did I have but to pop down to Sagaya's for a bagel and coffee on a beautiful, sunny summer morning. Unfortunately, the miles long line of runners/walkers for the "Run for Women" had not been in my radar and was now between me and my coffee. After a 30 minute drive around the start line and over the trail I arrived. The line for coffee was almost as long - but that did not deter me. I mean, it's Kaladi's iced coffee we're talking about. The confounding part came when I tried to get into my truck to drive ... read more

Travel is travel, regardless of where it begins, right? I took a short trip down to Homer for a short stay at a dear friend's cabin over the weekend. I needed a little break from the school year before seriously packing up for the summer and the trip to Thailand and then back to Southeast. It was a great drive, with some welcome rain. The beach in Homer and the sights along the Turnagain Arm and Kenai river region are some of the most beautiful in Alaska. Today is officially "less than two weeks" before heading out to Thailand! I'm in a "packing crisis". Just how much is too much or too little?!?! Rick Steves or Samantha Brown - I could use a little help if you happen upon this blog :-)... read more

PORT OF WHITTIER, ALASKA The clear weather held as far north as Glacier Bay. We had wonderful stops in Juneau and Skagway with clear skies and plenty of sun. It is a little hard to believe that the capital city of Alaska, Juneau, doesn't even have road access. There are, of course, roads about the town, but no highway that connects the city to any other areas of the state. The only way to get there is to fly or come by boat. The amount of float planes in the harbor was overwhelming and they were constantly coming and going all during our stay. One in every 14 people has a pilot's license and owning a plane is as common as having a car in the lower 48. Skagway was a living historical museum. Born of ... read more

Greetings to all our merry followers! Many of us left Toronto this morning at the 'crack of stupid' :) And, after a fabulous flight on Air Canada, arrived in Vancouver to catch up with the folks from the West who were joining us on the wonderful adventure. We moved on over to a private terminal where our aircraft from Flair Air joined us. A great time was had by all on the flight - a great crew - and we are all getting ready to travel, eat, laugh, get to know each other and create memories. We kicked things off with orange juice/mimosa/champagne - not a bad way to start this wonderful trip! We are all enjoying the luxury of executive seating - lots of leg room (not that I, personally need much of that!) - ... read more

This was the day of the trip home. It was a day we were both dreading and looking forward to at the same time. We had an incredible time in Alaska and did not want it to end, but our fatigue was overwhelming. We had breakfast and got our bags packed for flight instead of drive like we were use to for the last two weeks. We left the hotel with the truck packed and wanted to find some native Alaskan art for the home and had nearly an hour to do so before getting to Enterprise Rental to return ole’ silver. We stopped at one shop and the stuff was too touristy or two expensive. A second shop just made woven goods so it was not what we were looking for either. We conceded that ... read more

This was our last solid full day in Alaska for our Honeymoon trip. That was a bittersweet feeling as was evident on how we were not launched from a cannon when getting out of bed. We were clearly exhausted from nearly 2400 miles of touring and exploring Alaska. After breakfast and getting ready, we decided to explore Anchorage. We wanted to walk on a glacier and were told in Seward that Anchorage may still have seasonal availability. We decided since we walked to Exit Glacier in Seward and saw it pretty close so that was good enough. We decided to go to the area of the Anchorage Airport to explore the Anchorage Aviation Museum. We saw some video and explored the exhibits. It again was visual overload. We enjoyed the museum fully, but got to a ... read more

Good thing for planning and foresight. We over slept the hotel breakfast. I did have enough supplies for us to enjoy breakfast in our room. We enjoyed the view while we ate. The room really was just right. We were packed up in just an hour and off to Anchorage for the final leg of our trip. Boy did it rain. The truck is clean as a result. The conditions made for lousy views. We were motivated by that alone to push on to our destination with a minimum of stops. We even ate lunch on the fly in the car. We used up the last of our lunch supplies with the exception of the garlic bread Vern gave us. We still have enough for another sandwich each. It’s the never ending bread. It still tastes ... read more
