Dan and I worked out over dinner the string of small events that lead to our being at an amazing steak and seafood place for dinner. It started after breakfast when Dan went down stairs. He was looking at the stuffed bear in the lobby and got into conversation with the Bell-man about it when they started talking about our picking up a rental car. It was a very large brown bear. The bellman described the difference between a brown bear and a grizzly is its location. He suggested we call and see if Enterprise would pick us up because that is one of their amenities. Dan called and found out that the Airport location did not but we could transfer our reservation to another location and get picked up (saving us cab fare). We were ... read more

Anchorage We had intended to get up early to see some of the sail down Cook Inlet but had already arrived in Anchorage when we got up around 6AM. There were some lovely views of snowcapped mountains in the distance and it looked like it was going to be a great day. In the distance the sun was pouring down on snowcapped peaks that looked like they belonged in Alaska, while we were waiting to catch a view of the sun. Also in the far off distance Sharon believes she caught a glimpse of Mt. McKinley, which can be seen on a clear day. We had clouds overhead but in the distance the sun shined brightly, so we had high hopes for the day.We had breakfast in the Lido (Sharon had Waffles again and John had ... read more

We left Anchorage after work and got on the road south by 6pm. Dry weather! We hoped this meant we would be able to try out our canoe just recently purchased.  Drove to Tenderfoot campground and found a fairly decent site. Now we have new things to look for at a site to be wary of. A slight slope in parking the van. Placement of the fire pit in relation to the picnic table. This is in addition to our previous list: site on the periphery if there is a loop with inner site, semi secluded, not in sight of neighbors, space for our trailer and foyer beside the van...we don't achieve this every time but the list is good.  We did not even bother to set up our gazebo or tarp, optimistically thinking that it ... read more

LYN CHRYSTAL: I arrived back in Alaska on July 27th having spent three weeks in Austin, Texas welcoming a new grandson. Quite a change, we went from low 60’s to 100+ degrees and back again. The rest of our group had spent a week in Fairbanks while I was gone, and had enjoyed that; they were all in Anchorage by the time I got there. The first morning while I was getting my email Anchorage experienced a 6.5 earthquake, nobody seemed fazed so I figured it was no big deal! Betty, Gary and I decided to take a walk around downtown Anchorage and have lunch. Each weekday lunch hour there is free music in the Town Square, which is a grasses area in central Anchorage where folks bring their lunches and a blanket and enjoy a ... read more

I should have never texted Brenda B. about the rain in Alaska. That jinxed us! Not only did it rain in Soldotna for a couple days, but then it rained the whole time we were in Anchorage. Sunday, we went downtown, rode the free trolley to the Ulu Factory, Open Air Market, Qiviut Musk Ox Producers' Co-Operative store and ate great fish and chips at The Brewhouse. (We rode the People Mover bus @ .50 for seniors to downtown from the RV park. It was Jim's first experience with mass transit. I don't think he's ridden a bus since junior high. We took a cab back from downtown. Nuf said!) Monday; a bummer of a day; my flight to Mt. McKinley got cancelled due to weather; it rained all day & 4 women camped next door ... read more

Shabbat shalom from Sebec Lake I sit on our back porch looking out at across the lake, a view that has been a part of my life since I was two years old. I am surrounded by memories. In no particular order they come to me. Aunt Bill helping us put together a skeleton of a small rodent we found under the porch, picking berries for pie, hoisting the flags in the morning and taking them down at night while singing "Day is Done", stubbing countless toes on the roots and rocks, taking pictures on the picture rock and on the back steps, watching the sunsets, dreaming about the castle across the lake, riding in the Mary B. across the lake, cleaning brush, sweeping floors every morning, doing dishes, running through the woods with older cousins ... read more

(I am working off an iPad and unfortunately can't select the correct location so I am choosing Anchorage which I can select easily) Sitting in LaGuardia airport waiting for my next flight that will take me to Boston and a week of touring cemeteries in search of ancestors. On another plane flying north is Mark...we spent the last few weeks together traveling over 2000 miles from Chicago to Winnipeg and back. This airport is set up for business and professionals. Comfy chairs, outlets for electricity and USB. Ethernet connections too. Even the decor is business oriented. Etched glass, "Make a profit" "Check your investments" I wonder what an airport lounge for educators would look like? I thought I would be  able to upload this blog today from the airport but wifi costs here...I think I'm spoiled ... read more

Searching for Ancestors  My brother Jim met me at the airport in Boston. He'd arrived much earlier that day and had to wait till the afternoon when I arrived. We successfully got our car and made it out of the airport. Our first stop was to go find a place to sleep. We found something near the Hilltop Steakhouse in Saugus, MA. Then it was off to the Needham house where my Dad grew up in Lynnfield. Jim had seen on the satellite pictures that lots of construction had been taking place in the area and so it was with some trepidation that we proceeded up Chestnut Rd to find 345. Luckily the house was a still standing but had a for sale sign on it. For only $799,900 the house could be mine! We did ... read more

July 21 -22, 2011 VALDEZ TO ANCHORAGE Once again we were most fortunate to get a clear, sunny day for our trip to Anchorage, stopping for one night at Mendeltna Lodge, along the Glenn Highway. The main lodge was a very interesting log building with a rustic interior. We were treated to a Pizza dinner that night by our hostess. There were many stops along the way either to snap pictures of the beautiful mountains, rivers, lakes and glaciers, or to wait for road construction!! One of our interesting stops was at a little “hole in the wall” place called Brown Bear Rhodehouse. Here we met the owner, cook, hostess and waitress who is also known as “The Hunter”. Cindy Rhodes, 4ft. 11inches weighing 91lbs. shot a Kodiak Brown Bear that was 10ft. 6inches tall and ... read more

After a last flurry of packing, many hugs, and a few tears I have finally begun my journey. I am starting my year exploring the Galapagos for 10 days and then traveling down through the rest of Ecuador and into Peru to begin work in my volunteer program. Two long flights are behind me and there is still one more to go before I finally reach South America and will have to scramble together my limited Spanish in order to find my way around Quito. Wish me luck!... read more
