Wow, now that was a lot of flying! Cape Town to Dubai, Dubai to Seattle, Seattle to Anchorage. So now I can enjoy having my feet on the ground for a while. It's taking us a little longer this time to adjust to the time change - Anchorage is 10 hours behind South Africa and we are all still recovering from the flu- so things are a little fuzzy when I try and remember what exactly we did the first few days..haha, but I'll try and fill the gaps with some pictures.. The weather is very pleasant at the momemnt, eventhough we had our scarves and coats on, the locals were in strappy tops and shorts! It starts getting light at about 4:30am and dark at about 11:30pm- very long days! it's weird trying to go ... read more

As I mentioned yesterday, we went to the Alaska Aviation Museum. Jerry, one of our fellow travelers, is a retired pilot from Eastern Airlines. He was able to give us a lot of good information about the planes. We left the museum and went to Earthquake Park. There is a memorial there for all the losses to the big earthquake that hit Anchorage on Good Friday, March 27, 1964. Jim took a picture there in the park trying to show how much the ground had shifted. He says it was probably 15 or 20 feet. 4th Avenue, Anchorage's main, street dropped as much as 15 ft. The earthquake measured 9.2 on the Richter Scale. There were 55 strong aftershocks(some with 5.0 on the Richter Scale) that weekend. Nine people perished. At the airport, more damage was ... read more

Another beautiful day in Alaska - sunny and around 70. We drove to Anchorage which is about 40 miles south of here. Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska - it has around 300,000 people. The total population of the state is 710,000. It is a beautiful drive there. Anchorage is a very modern city. We went to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum. It is near the International Airport. There is a lake next to the museum. There were lots of seaplanes landing and taking off at the lake. Airplanes have played a very important part of the history of Alaska. If not for airplanes, Alaska would not be the state it is today. I am attaching pictures of some of the planes at the museum. The first is the Catalina, an amphibian plane from World ... read more

First part of the day was simply getting the car ready for road travel and some other preparedness. At the moment, I could probably last a week or two if the car broke down in the wilderness given the snacks and water. And no, the snacks are not all chocolate - nuts, raisins, peanut butter, etc. The staples of road travel. On the way to Target, I saw a sign for a place offering helicopter instruction. Mmm, that could be really interesting. Unfortunately I doubt it could be done in one day and on second thought, me in charge of flying a helicopter is actually a pretty scary thought!! Guess that might be one experience I'll pass in consideration of the safety of others. I had a bit of time to spare this afternoon so I ... read more

July 21st: All flights on time...weather seemed great until we arrived in Anchorage to rain, rain, rain! We were excited to get somewhere and see something, but then the dreaded jetlag set in......well, at least for Dana. Dylin was set on swimming in the indoor pool, although it was 50 degrees outside and our bodies thought it was 4 hours later than the clock in Anchorage! Our hotel is great, Embassy Suites. Thank God they have an onsite restaurant or I would have died of starvation. Dylin got her swim time but I was in bed by 8:30pm Anchorage time (12:30 est). We called Regal Air to check the status of our Bear Charter tomorrow and they said we were still tentative due to the low ceiling/rain in the area. Oh, no, they can't cancel the ... read more

Packing was a definite challenge - needed to consider having shorts to winter coat and everything in between. Stopping to do wash is only going to be every 10-14 days. The absolute best part was that when done, not one business suit included! That I could handle. Arrival at the Milwaukee airport was no different than any business travel day with the exception of having more luggage. It just wasn't real that a trip to Alaska, that dream trip you hope to make some day, had actually begun. Having exhausted myself in finishing work and trying to pack and get ready plus a myriad of other things, even the 5 1/2 hr flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage went fast since I slept most of the way. Then that announcement on the plane that our initial decent ... read more

We went for a hike at Flattop mountain just a few miles outside Anchorage, took a shuttle from downtown for 20.00 USD per person. The hike to the top from the parking lot is about 4 miles each way or maybe less, the climb is about 1800ft from the parking lot. Flattop is around 3800ft above see level, and you can see the entire downtoen area from the top, say hello to DENALI.... read more

The coastal trail is just a few yards away from downtown Anchorage, it covers 11 miles long along the Cook Inlet. You can walk along, bike it, or even cross country skiing in the winter time. We rented bikes from the downtown rental co, we did see some bald eagles while in the trail, we even saw a Lynx, we did not see any moose.... read more

Landed in Tent City ( ANCHORAGE ) on saturday mid day, headed over to the hotel, and walked around donwtown Anchorage. The city is not as we as we thought, the downtown area is just a couple of big streets. The first thing we did was eat at Phillips, she had the Salmon Burger ( it was good ) I had the Hulibut Burger, it was bad, Had no favor at all. We visited a couple of restaurants / bars in the downtown area, this area is very difficut to find good food, unless you want to eat burgers & more burgers. 2 night we went to Humphys for dinner, the food was great, once again restaurant / bar. The downtown mall, we it is just a mall, we did not visit, we visited the downtown ... read more

I selected a nice spot along the river. It was quite a good spot and nobody seemed to be particularly interested in it. There were a lot of cars passing back and forth along the road in front of the spot I had chosen. It was secluded and close to the river. But the walk to the river dredged up a bunch of mosquitoes, so I only went once and I didn't end up staying that long as a result. But the spot was quite nice and I spent a very pleasant night. Because of the long nap in the evening, I ended up sleeping not very long at all. But the deceptiveness of night and day in the north left me thinking it must be quite late. It was quite light outside. But it turned ... read more
