Recap of last night first: We ate a delicious dinner and got stuff put away for the night. We were just finishing dinner and one of the other people in camp came running in scared because there was a bear taking a leisurely stroll right through camp. So we all stepped out and watched him for a while, but I didn’t have my camera with me. After dinner, I went out with our guide and another worker here at camp and we were able to land a few fish each. The other worker has an unbelievable cast and he was able to look at my fly casting and gave me two tips and within a cast I was able to really start throwing the fly out there a long ways (for a rookie). We came back ... read more

This was our flight day to Anchorage. We had a minor delay at DFW, but arrived safely. One suitcase arrived minus a wheel, which proved to be a challenge until the last day of our travel when John's friend offered a luggage cart which was SO much appreciated on the final legs of the trip. After collecting our luggage, the shuttle from airport to hotel arrived quickly and we were soon settled into the Ramada Inn Anchorage. The hotel has been recently updated with spa-style shower and decorator touches in the rooms but maintains a historical feel with the many framed photos from early years of the city. We had dinner at the Slippery Salmon next door to the hotel. John enjoyed Reindeer Hot Dog for dinner and I had salmon chowder. We visited with another ... read more

Day 2 of Silver Salmon Fishing: We woke up early this morning to a hot breakfast of eggs, sausage, oatmeal and donuts. After we geared up we hopped in the cart that attaches to the 4-Wheeler. I included a picture below that shows the cart that we ride to the river in. We went back to one of the spots that we had good success with yesterday and began pulling out large silver after large silver. I included a picture of Jim, Dad and Grandpa with their biggest fish of the morning. If you look at grandpa’s fish, you can see two small swipe marks on the back. The other side had larger swipe marks as well. These marks are most likely from a bear. We have only seen one Grizzly bear and it was about ... read more

Day 2: First day of Silver Salmon fishing We all slept well after a full day of fighting halibut and woke up early to be at the Yakutat airport (if that’s what you can call it) to board the bush plane and head to the Tsiu River (pronounced si-u). There are two pictures of the plane below. It definitely wasn’t Delta Airlines, but the ride felt very safe. The views out of the window were incredible the entire flight. I included a picture below that shows my view out of my window the entire flight. After about an hour of flight time, we arrived at the river and landed directly next to the lodge (picture of runway is included, once again, definitely not Delta Airlines). The entire camp staff was outside waiting for the plane and ... read more

Travel so far: We flew to Minneapolis, then Minneapolis to Anchorage, and then boarded another plane to go from Anchorage to Yakutat. The traveling part of the trip went as expected for the first half of the trip. The flights were long, but not brutally long. We were able to get some sleep on the first 2 flights. Jim was right at home on the last flight, he found a plane buddy who was a Missouri wrestling alumni and they ended up talking college wrestling for the entire flight to Yakutat. We landed in Yakutat and pulled up to the airport, which could be easily mistaken for a small house. The car lady was waiting for us when we walked through the airport doors. We loaded all our gear into the Yukon and headed 5 miles ... read more

Denali National Park to Anchorage 239 Miles Days 21 - 22 - 23 August 6, 7, and 8 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday We made a stop about 68 miles into the drive and we saw the top of Denali, and so did Leisel. There was a town named Houston along the way population 1340 and only a post office noted on the trip log. We got gas in Wasilla. Anyone recognize the name? It is Sarah Palin's hometown where she was mayor before becoming governor of Alaska. But, that is not where she can see Russia from. Then on to the Golden Nugget RV Park. This was an exciting stop right off the bat. Nicole and Jason have been collecting our mail since July 1st and that was the address we left for them to ship ... read more

I am just testing to see if this works and am getting a link for people to be able to find this blog. I am going to try and post once a day and will try to upload as many photos as possible to document the trip. Feel free to comment if you would like, not sure how it works, but I think there is an option. -MJ... read more

It has been a while since my last update and so much has happened - I also did not have internet connectivity while cruising on the Inner passage which meant maintaining a blog was always going to be difficult. Since the last blog I have been to : 1) Vancouver Island, Canada - splendid memories of the hotel we stayed in - the Fairmont Empress built some 100 years ago and the famous Butchart Gardens in place for over 103 years. 2) Vancouver - High density city with the special memories being the Capalino suspension bridge and the Lion Gate bridge 3) The Inner passage cruise over 7 days which started in Vancouver and finished in Seward, Alaska - special memories of the the ship which carried 2700 paying passengers and 1300 cruise staff, a sea ... read more
